[Bug 252361] [NEW] Imagemagick should recommend/suggest ufraw

2008-07-27 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: imagemagick

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04
imagemagick:
  Installed: 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2ubuntu1

When trying to use the "display"-command in imagemagick to show a RAW-file from
a digital camera imagemagick complains that it can't find the executable
"ufraw-batch" (in the ufraw package).
I realize that since imagemagick is in main it can't depend on ufraw, and I
don't know if it can recommend it either, since recommendations are installed
automatically. But there should at least be some kind of hint from the package
description that it might need ufraw to handle RAW-files from digital cameras.

** Affects: imagemagick (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 129722] Re: Dell XPS M1210 with snd-hda-intel noise in left sound channel when resuming from hibernate

2008-07-27 Thread Mikael Gerdin
I've done some testing with the Intrepid Alpha3 Live-cd and with the
most recent Hardy kernel.

Hardy:
Sometimes when booting from a complete poweroff the noise exists. It might
appear when suspend/resume:ing.

Intrepid:
When I booted the livecd I couldn't hear the noise but after a suspend/resume
cycle it appeared.

The noise always disappears after a
"modprobe -r snd-hda-intel && modprobe snd-hda-intel"

[Bug 322202] Re: [gm45] Session lost on resume from sleep in Jaunty on Lenovo T500

2009-05-04 Thread Mikael Gerdin
I've experienced X crashes when suspending with UXA, but I've found a sort of
work-around.
I've read somewhere that chvt:ing during suspend was causing these crashes, and
I tested commenting out
the file /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/90chvt and then suspending with UXA seems to
work.
I'm on a i945 (8086:27a2)

starts it when resuming, look at the existing for examples.

[Bug 285970] [NEW] [intrepid] uvesafb requires /dev/mem and /dev/zero

2008-10-19 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

v86d, which is required by uvesafb requires /dev/mem and /dev/zero to be
present early in the initramfs.
Currently they are created by the init-top/usplash script, moving them to the

[Bug 200379] Re: [KDE4] hardy, khtml/kdecore, konqueror crashed during regular use

2008-08-16 Thread Mikael Gerdin
I've experienced crashes on this assertion several times with Konqueror 4.1 in
Hardy using the kubuntu-members-kde4 ppa. It happens irregularly when i close
Konqueror (which is not so strange as it's KHTMLFactory's destructor that calls

Setting MESA_NO_ASM stops the crashes for me, I agree that this is a much nicer

Perhaps mesa's postinst-script could check cpu vendor and add MESA_NO_ASM=1 to

[Bug 87661] Re: [apport] polytopes crashed with SIGILL in _mesa_x86_64_transform_points4_perspective()

2008-05-28 Thread Mikael Gerdin
By checking `uname -m` we only detect if the _kernel_ is x86-64.
This would be a problem if someone was running a 64-bit kernel and a 32-bit
userland because they would get MESA_NO_ASM exported without needing it.
I think it would be better to do
if [ `dpkg --print-architecture` = "amd64" ]
Because that would tell us if we were running in an amd64 userland and that's
what we really want to test for.
I think checking for "3dnow" in flags is preferred because AMD is not the only
cpu vendor using that technology, even though none of the others have built any
64-bit chips yet, it would probably be more future-proof.

[Bug 65027] Re: Notebooks freezes after closing lid or pressing some FN key combination

2008-08-28 Thread Mikael Gerdin
I have not seen this issue on my laptop since at least 2.6.22. I've
tested the "unoficcial" 2.6.27-packages for hardy and they are also not
affected. I think this bug should be closed since the exact issue it was
reported on has been fixed in the kernel for some time.

[Bug 305565] Re: kleopatra complains that gpgme should be compiled with gpgconf support

2009-03-22 Thread Mikael Gerdin
It seems that it is sufficient for gpgme to know the path of where it should
find gpgconf, just as with the gpg and gpgsm binaries. Simply adding
"--with-gpgconf=/usr/bin/gpgconf" to its configure options makes it work for me.

I have noticed the exact same problem on my M1210, both with Ubuntu

[Bug 148282] Re: [gutsy] Clicking KDE desktop with compiz running puts desktop on top

2007-10-03 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Yes, but disabling it completely obviously raises some other issues that it
fixes.
I've tried enabling and disabling some of its subcomponents, but it's hard to
tell which combination of plugins breaks it because I have to log in and out of
KDE each time i change the settings.
Right now I think that it's only the topmost option (Legacy Fullscreen Support)
that causes this particular bug.

[Bug 153943] Gdebi-kde uses massive amounts of memory!

2007-10-18 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

When I tried gdebi-kde today to install an updated kdelibs-deb (to fix the
kopete issue) I suddenly noticed that my system was getting less and less
responsive, with increasing disk activity.
It seemed that gdebi allocated massive amounts of memory, when I checked with
"top" it said that gdebi-kde was using 56% of my available memory (1024MB). I
am quite sure that this wasn't the case when I used gdebi-kde before, although
I usually stick to using "dpkg" in a terminal.
The massive disk activity was apparently because of all the swapping the kernel
needed to do to get more memory.
I don't have any crash log or anything, but I'll be happy to provide the devs
with whatever gdb/valgrind/somethingelse-output they might need.

[Bug 153943] Re: Gdebi-kde uses massive amounts of memory!

2007-10-20 Thread Mikael Gerdin
I've just tried running gdebi-kde on the exact same computer, but
instead of i386 (which I usually run) I tried running the amd64-flavour
from a USB-stick. When doing this I noticed no strange memory behavior
at all, so I might be that this bug only affects i386, which sounds very
strange since gdebi-kde is written in python.

It would be nice if anyone else could test this on amd64 (or any other
platform for that matter) to confirm if this only affects i386.

[Bug 148282] [gutsy] Clicking KDE desktop with compiz running puts desktop on top

2007-10-02 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-kde

When I click somewhere on the KDE desktop the desktop "window" is put on
top of all other windows, including kicker. I also use "focus follows
mouse", and now when I put the pointer over the desktop window, the last
focused windows loses focus and I suspect that the desktop window gets
focus, this was not the case before.

Another symptom of this bug is that my conky window only appears o cube-face
#1, not on any of the others.
The last symptom is that file icons and folders in my ~/Desktop/ folder only
appears on desktop #1, not on any of the others, this could suggest that this
entire issue might be related to another bug: (LP #147322)

I suspect that this might have something to do with some X-window
property of the KDE desktop window that makes compiz (but not kwin)
think that the desktop is a "normal" window. (maybe related to the patch
fixing kde-screensaver+compiz?)

[Bug 145337] Brightness key stopped working after update [Gutsy]

2007-09-26 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu Gutsy (and have been since gutsy was a few weeks old)
After some upgrade in the last two weeks (sorry, I don't have an exact version
or date).
The LCD brightness keys on my Dell XPS m1210 laptop has stopped working.
I've tried disabling auto-start of hotkey-setup, but it doesn't help.
If i start in single-user mode then the keys do work.
When monitoring the output of acpid and pressing the keys I see that it's
calling the
/etc/acpi/video_brightness{up,down}.sh scripts but nothing happens.
I can also see that hal can recognizes the keys by running 'lshal -m' and
pressing them.
The only way I can set the brightness now is with the GUI-based

[Bug 192655] [NEW] Open office splash binary lockup

2008-02-17 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

System: Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 amd64, updated 2008-02-15.
I discovered that if I try to start two openoffice applications at the same
time, like this:
$ oowriter & oocalc &
either from a terminal or by opening OO documents, then the program drawing the
splash screen locks up and eats cpu resources and makes Xorg eat cpu resources.
I attached to the oosplash.bin-process with strace and it seems like it's stuck
in some sort of blocked IO-loop:
poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN, revents=POLLHUP}], 1, 50) = 1
read(6, "", 255)= 0
select(8, [7], [7], NULL, NULL) = 1 (out [7])
writev(7, [{"[EMAIL PROTECTED]@\4\2\0"..., 72}], 1) = 72
read(7, 0x60d5b4, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
read(7, 0x60d5b4, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN, revents=POLLHUP}], 1, 50) = 1
read(6, "", 255)= 0
select(8, [7], [7], NULL, NULL) = 1 (out [7])

read(7, 0x60d5b4, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN, revents=POLLHUP}], 1, 50) = 1

I checked the FD:s and found that 6 was a pipe and 7 was a socket.

I've made an easy hackish-patch that fixes this, it can probably be improved by
making python find out what the arch of the system is and check lib32 if it's a
64-bit one, but I don't know enough about python to do that.

[Bug 215260] [NEW] [hardy] kopete-kde4 crashes with SIGSEGV on incoming message

2008-04-10 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdenetwork-kde4

Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04
-
KDE 4 Kopete crashes with SIGSEGV when someone initiates a conversation with
you using MSN Messenger and you've configured the MSN Plugin to "Automatically
open a chat window when someone starts a conversation". (This will probably
only work when the other person's client causes actually makes kopete detect
that someone has started a conversation).

Disabling the said option prevents the crash.

2008-04-26 Thread Mikael Gerdin
I've tested building and running the latest debian version (2.3.0-1) and I've
failed to reproduce the crash.
However there are Severe performance issues when using Xv and compositing with
2.3.0, Playback of a 1280x720 video with "desktop effects" enabled causes my
cpu usage to reach about 80% on both cores, but when playing the same video
without the effects i get around 10%. But at least my X server doesn't crash...

textured video in my xorg.conf and now I can use Xv without segfaults and with

[Bug 194860] Re: Hardy regressions [bash-completion]

2008-02-25 Thread Mikael Gerdin
This problem seems to be because of a change in the file /etc/bash_completion
The change is in almost all completion definitions from:
"cur=${COMP_WORDS[COMP_CWORD]}"
to
"cur=`_get_cword`"
Replacing the /etc/bash_completion with the one from gutsy fixes this for me,
and the problem that the fix is supposed to address is something that has never
bothered me:
# Get the word to complete
# This is nicer than ${COMP_WORDS[$COMP_CWORD]}, since it handles cases
# where the user is completing in the middle of a word.
# (For example, if the line is "ls foobar",
# and the cursor is here > ^
# it will complete just "foo", not "foobar", which is what the user wants.)

[Bug 129722] Re: Dell XPS M1210 with snd-hda-intel noise in left sound channel when resuming from hibernate

2008-02-25 Thread Mikael Gerdin
This has recently reappeared when I reinstalled kubuntu on my laptop and
installed the amd64 version of Hardy. I know this is a really tricky
kind of bug to hunt down, but I'm willing to try any fix or work-around
you might come up with, the only working fix I know of is to do a
"modprobe -r snd_hda_intel" and then re-insert the module.

[Bug 194814] Re: A lot of programms can't start because of KComponentData

2008-02-27 Thread Mikael Gerdin
(on a hardy-amd64-machine)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mv .kde4 .kde4-bak
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ speedcrunch
Fatal error: you need to have a KComponentData object before
you do anything that requires it! Examples of this are config
objects, standard directories or translations.
Aborted (core dumped)

The exact same error as before, but I can't reproduce the error on my
i386-installation of hardy KDE 4.
Note that this is from my KDE3 session. I will try to start up a clean KDE 4
session and report if that does work.

[Bug 194814] Re: A lot of programms can't start because of KComponentData

2008-02-27 Thread Mikael Gerdin
When I removed /etc/kde4rc all qt4 apps suddenly started working agin.
I think that this is actually is a duplicate of bug #193498
Also, I am not using Qt 4.4.
I think that the reason it worked on my i386-machine was that with the same
version of kubuntu-default-settings installed (1:8.04-11) on the machines, the
amd64-version shows /etc/kde4rc when i do a "dpkg -L kubuntu-default-settings"
and the i386 doesn't.

I can also confirm that iwl3945 in linux-ubuntu-modules 2.6.24-10.14
does not enable the LED on my Dell XPS M1210 (amd64 userland)

[Bug 187693] [NEW] kdebase-runtime source package failed build on i386

2008-01-31 Thread Mikael Gerdin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-runtime

kdebase-runtime has failed to build on i386, this leads to kde4 upgrades being
broken on all archs since it's the i386 build-server that builds the
arch-independent packages.
I think this is the relevant part of the buildlog:
dh_install -pkdebase-runtime-data --sourcedir=debian/tmp
cp: cannot stat
`debian/tmp//usr/lib/kde4/share/applications/kde4/knetattach.desktop': No such
file or directory
dh_install: command returned error code 256

[Bug 145337] Re: Brightness key stopped working after update [Gutsy]

2007-11-01 Thread Mikael Gerdin
* Model: Dell XPS m1210
1. system-product-name is MXC062
2. The dcop-commands work.
3. The keycodes returned are 212 and 101.

lshal -m reports
platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input condition ButtonPressed =
brightness-up
platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input condition ButtonPressed =
brightness-down

A note to people who have used mikelopez's shell-script:
It somehow suppressed the output in xev when pressing brightness-down, when I
removed it from /etc/acpi/video_brightnessdown.sh I could read the keycode.
