[Bug 1792857] [NEW] Mouse pointer is the wrong size after resuming from suspend

2018-09-16 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

After resuming from suspend, but mouse pointer is the wrong size when
located in some parts of the screen. Specifically, when mousing over the
left or top bars of the UI (not the desktop or any running programs),
the pointer is too large. A workaround is to open display settings, pick
any other resolution, click apply, then click revert. When the original
resolution is restored, the pointer size returns to normal.

[Bug 1691314] Re: Completions should be paged through PAGER when `page-completions` is off

2017-05-16 Thread Mike Doherty
** Description changed:

When tab completion sends output through a pager, it seemed to use more.
- Because less is better than more, I wanted it to use more instead,
+ Because less is better than more, I wanted it to use less instead,
particularly so I can scroll in both directions.

I initially made /bin/more a symlink to less (which would trigger its
more-emulation mode, but that's still better than actual more), but this
had no effect. As a result, I consulted the man page for bash. In the
section on readline, there is a setting `page-completions` which says
that when on (the default), readline will use a built-in more-like pager
to page the results. This doesn't specify what happens when it is turned
off, but I expected that instead of the built-in pager, it would use an
external on, specifically the one specified in the PAGER environment
variable. However, it instead simply dumps the results in the terminal.

Please add some way to use PAGER as the pager for completion results.

[Bug 1662774] [NEW] Icon and menu identify one program as another program

2017-02-07 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

On rare occasions, I launch gnome-terminal, and the icon in the
dash/dock is for another program. The menu at the top of the screen also
identifies the running program as that other program. In the forthcoming
screenshot, note that the menu says "VLC media player" and although
there is a gnome-terminal icon in the dash, it's not active. Instead,
the VLC icon corresponds to the gnome-terminal window. If the other
program is also running, the dash shows that there are two windows of
that program (ie two VLCs) by showing two dots on the icon.
Unfortunately, this is so rare that I can't remember if it is only
gnome-terminal/VLC. (I don't think so, but I am not sure.)

This is weird and wrong.

[Bug 1568679] [NEW] Can't connect bluetooth device with on/off switch in control center

2016-04-10 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

The on/off switch for controlling whether to connect to a bluetooth
device doesn't work.

I tried to use the control centre to connect to a bluetooth audio
device. I switched bluetooth on, and several devices were detected. When
selecting the device I wanted, the bluetooth settings correctly
identified that it was already paired, but disconnected. The on/off
switch for connecting to it was disabled. The on/off switch for that
device in the system tray works normally, and the device connects
properly.

[Bug 1225326] Re: transmission-gtk crashed with SIGSEGV in curl_easy_pause()

2015-12-15 Thread Mike Doherty
This bug is still present in transmission-gtk 2.84 (14307), and still
makes webseeds just about useless. Note that transmission's bug tracker
lists #5580 as "closed (worksforme)" and that bug was last updated 2
years ago. This bug should probably be re-raised upstream.

[Bug 1321280] [NEW] Sometimes can't adjust screen brightness

2014-05-20 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, the screen brightness controls work on my laptop, and
sometimes they don't. I haven't noticed any pattern as to when it works
or doesn't.

When it doesn't work, I press Fn+F6/F7 to adjust the screen brightness.
The notification pop-up appears, showing the new brightness setting --
but the brightness doesn't actually change. Rebooting fixes the issue.
There is nothing in syslog or dmesg.

[Bug 1316715] [NEW] Directories with ampersand in the name are displayed incorrectly

Here's another screenshot showing a new directory I added called test

This should show:

[Bug 1310097] [NEW] rhythmbox segfaults when switching between songs on a CD

2014-04-19 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

I have an audio CD, and I'm playing songs from it by double-clicking in
the left-most column (labelled with a speaker) on the CD ripping screen.
Once a song is playing and I switch songs, or the song ends and
rhythmbox should move onto the next song, rhythmbox crashes.

The CD may be scratched, so I'd expect read errors -- but not the whole
application to crash, and certainly not with such consistency. Playing
the songs works fine, it's only switching to a new track that crashes
rhythmbox.

[Bug 1285961] Re: 0930:0214 [Toshiba TECRA R700 PT318C-00F001] Bluetooth disabled until reloading btusb module

2014-03-22 Thread Mike Doherty
I also just tested with a fresh install of 13.10 to rule out a)
upgrading rather than a fresh install doing this, or b) me messing
something up. The fresh 13.10 install exhibited the same problem
described, suggesting this is a real regression.

[Bug 1295925] [NEW] Rhythmbox displays the wrong album art

2014-03-21 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

Rhythmbox displays album art itself at the top of the window, among the
controls. It also sends album art to notify-osd for display in
notification bubbles, and in indicator-sound. Rhythmbox is using the
wrong album art much of the time. In the instant case, the mp3 files
have no embedded album art, so I would expect either the correct album
art is downloaded, or none is displayed (default image or blank).
Instead, album art is apparently picked randomly from my music
collection.

[Bug 1293141] [NEW] plymouth doesn't say which luks passphrase it wants

2014-03-16 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

I have two additional encrypted filesystems which are mounted at boot.
For the first one, I'm prompted The filesystem for $mount_point is
unavailable... enter passphrase for /dev/mapper/encrypted_vol. Once the
passphrase is entered, the text box empties, but no other text on the
screen changes. I've deduced that this is the prompt for the second
filesystem's passphrase, and indeed entering the passphrase at this time
works. Boot continues, and both filesystems were mounted. But obviously,
the text should change to indicate which filesystem is unavailable, and
which volume to enter a passphrase for.

[Bug 1293141] Re: plymouth doesn't say which luks passphrase it wants

2014-03-16 Thread Mike Doherty
I've remembered the prompt incorrectly.

The first prompt is as I described. For the second prompt, the text
saying which filesystem is unavailable does change. But plymouth still
says Unlocking the disk /dev/mapper/the_first_volume instead of
updating to reflect the volume that is really being unlocked this time.

I will upload a video shortly.

[Bug 1285961] Re: [Toshiba TECRA R700 PT318C-00F001] Bluetooth disabled until reloading btusb module

2014-03-01 Thread Mike Doherty
I've updated the BIOS:

mike@charron:~
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
[sudo] password for mike:
Version 2.20
12/22/2011

I had to install and use Windows to do that, so I briefly tested
bluetooth in Windows, and it worked fine.

I'm not sure what else you want to know about what happened -- I
updated the BIOS, and the problem I'm describing is unchanged.

[Bug 1285961] [NEW] Bluetooth disabled until reloading btusb module

2014-02-27 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

When I boot my machine, the bluetooth indicator isn't present. The
bluetooth section of the system control panel shows that bluetooth is
off, and bluetooth is disabled. But flipping the switch to on
doesn't actually turn on bluetooth -- the switch in the GUI gets flipped
to on, but bluetooth never actually comes up. If I navigate away and re-
open the bluetooth control panel, the switch will be back to off.

Still, `rfkill list bluetooth` lists two devices:

mike@charron:~
$ rfkill list bluetooth
0: Toshiba Bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

And hciconfig lists a device, marked DOWN:

mike@charron:~
$ hciconfig
hci0: Type: BR/EDR Bus: USB
BD Address: 00:00:00:00:00:00 ACL MTU: 0:0 SCO MTU: 0:0
DOWN
RX bytes:34 acl:0 sco:0 events:3 errors:0
TX bytes:12 acl:0 sco:0 commands:4 errors:0

I can ask hciconfig to bring it up:

mike@charron:~
$ hciconfig up hci0
Warning: unknown command - hci0
hci0: Type: BR/EDR Bus: USB
BD Address: 00:00:00:00:00:00 ACL MTU: 0:0 SCO MTU: 0:0
DOWN
RX bytes:34 acl:0 sco:0 events:3 errors:0
TX bytes:12 acl:0 sco:0 commands:4 errors:0

mike@charron:~
$ sudo hciconfig hci0 up
[sudo] password for mike:

[0]
mike@charron:~
$ hciconfig
hci0: Type: BR/EDR Bus: USB
BD Address: E8:39:DF:37:2B:72 ACL MTU: 1021:8 SCO MTU: 64:1
UP RUNNING
RX bytes:530 acl:0 sco:0 events:24 errors:0
TX bytes:335 acl:0 sco:0 commands:24 errors:0

But neither the bluetooth indicator nor the bluetooth control panel
reflect that bluetooth is up.

To get them to work, I run `sudo rmmod btusb sudo modprobe btusb
rfkill unblock bluetooth`, which causes the bluetooth indicator to be
displayed, and the bluetooth control panel to function normally. Having
to reload the bluetooth kernel module seems like a bug.

[Bug 676289] Re: Add option to script to not record raw control characters

2013-12-09 Thread Mike Doherty
Sorry, but the report was absolutely complete. As stated, the expected
behaviour is that script should have a mode which omits control
characters in the output file. The steps to reproduce are to record
anything with control characters and observe that there are control
characters in the output file. The expected behaviour is that there not
be control characters in the output file when the requested mode is
used.

[Bug 1244869] Re: Unity home lens restricts results to only files after a search returning only files

2013-10-30 Thread Mike Doherty
Here's another example with the filter section expanded. As you can see,
when searching with a query that returns several kinds of results, the
filters don't change. But when searching with a query that returns only
files, the filters are automatically changed to just files. To get
search results for a query that should return applications, I have to
either include applications in the filter, or remove files from the
filter, which switches back to the default filters, which includes
applications.

The same thing happens with other categories. In the example, I used
'chrom' as a search term, which should return google-chrome. But it also
returns some files. If I use a search term that only returns
applications -- 'google-chrome' -- then the categories are restricted to
applications (instead of files).

So, it looks like the issue is really that the dash is changing the
filters based on what kinds of results are being returned by your query
-- and then not putting the filters back to the default when you do your
next query.

** Attachment added: Another example, with the filters panel expanded

[Bug 1244869] [NEW] Unity home lens restricts results to only files after a search returning only files

2013-10-25 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

After doing a search in the home lens (the one that returns both files
and applications for a search), if your search returned files, then the
next search will return files too, even if it should be returning
applications.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Press the super key to bring up the dash
2. Type a search query that will return only files
3. Go away, perhaps by opening the file you searched for, or pressing the super
key again
4. Press the super key to bring up the dash
5. Replace the previous search term with a search query that should return
applications
6. Notice that it actually returns only files

I expected the 2nd search to return applications (and maybe files) --
but certainly not just files.

The workaround is to delete the search query before beginning to type to
replace the search term.

I have a video showing the error. Let's see if I can attach it...

The system continues to function. Network Manager doesn't notice that
the interface died, so it still shows as connected. Selecting the wifi
AP from the Network Manager drop-down menu causes it to re-connect.
Reconnecting works just fine, until the next time this kernel error
reoccurs.

2013-04-19 Thread Mike Doherty
When I try to boot it, the kernel panics with can't find init, try
passing init=. My system has encrypted LVM set up. So, /boot is on an
unencrypted partition, and then it needs to decrypt and mount / in order
to continue. I figure it is trying to use the boot partition as the root
partition, which would explain why it can't find init. I'm not sure how
to proceed, so I'm marking this as kernel-unable-to-test-upstream for
now.

[Bug 1072084] [NEW] package exim4-config 4.76-3ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-10-27 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

This is like #1041980, but occurs because the upgrade detects a missing
configuration template. Touching the missing file allows the upgrade to
proceed to completion. The pre-install script should handle this better
- in particular because I haven't done anything to modify the exim
configuration since installation. This version of the package should be
able to handle what the last version of the package put on my system.

[Bug 1069982] Re: testarp test fails when it should succeed

2012-10-24 Thread Mike Doherty
There are two packages which provide the command 'arping':
 - arping
 - iputils-arping

The commands provided by these two packages appear to differ in what the
-D switch means.

[Bug 1054286] [NEW] htop crashes with a core dump when clicking in the application

2012-09-21 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

I connected via SSH to a server, and ran htop -u anotheruser. When I
clicked in the terminal, htop crashed, and dumped core. It crashed
reliably when I tested further. When I did htop -u myuser, which has
processes running, clicking resulted in a process getting selected as
intended. anotheruser didn't have any processes running at the time I
clicked the window. I also tried with user 'nobody' which has no
processes running - again, clicking resulted in a crash.

I have an strace of an example of the crash, which will be attached
shortly.

[Bug 1047892] [NEW] Transmission doesn't limit download speed

2012-09-08 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

I've tried to limit download speed to 500kB/s using either: global
limit, temporary limits, per-torrent limits. None of these seem to have
any effect on the rate, which is sustained at or above 1MB/s. This is
not a matter of the rate being uneven, and fluctuating around the target
limit - the actual rate is orders of magnitude higher than the limit.
There is *no rate limiting* happening at all.

[Bug 1025479] [NEW] Unexpectedly deletes files after answering no to overwrite this wav file?

2012-07-16 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

If you have already ripped tracks as .wav, then when you try to rip them
again (say, to get additional formats, or to rip with different
metadata) then asunder will ask you if you want to overwrite the .wav
files. If you answer yes then they are presumably overwritten. If you
answer no however, the files you already had are *deleted*. That's
simply unacceptable.

[Bug 989373] [NEW] cdromupgrade connects to internet despite selecting no at the prompt

2012-04-26 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

cdromupgrade asks if you want to connect to the internet to get updated
package lists. The prompt specifically states that if you answer no
then the network won't be used at all. I answered no and the updater
tried to download new package lists. If I'm not connected to the
network, then that is a fatal error in the upgrade.

I'm attempting to upgrade by mounting the alternate CD, and running
./cdromupgrade

[Bug 971757] [NEW] Can't remove category when editing a task

2012-04-02 Thread Mike Doherty

I entered a task, then later added a category by adding @category. Now I
can't remove it - when I remove the @ and everything after it, and save,
the editing dialog closes, but the category isn't shown as removed in
the main window. Re-editing shows that the text is unchanged, and
@category is still present.

Logging out and logging back in makes the option appear. It should be
possible to insert it without requiring the user to do that.
