I have some additional info which might help. First of all, with all the kernel updates up until know the problem persists. However, it appears that it is not specific to the USB external disk. It also occurs every now and then if I use a 12in1 cardreader to read my photos from a flashcard.

I have found a work around which I use now: If I switch of the Wifi card with the switch on the laptop (physical switch) and then unplug the powercord and then switch on the wifi card again, everything works fine! Whether the powercord is inserted or not when switching the Wifi card on again.
