[Bug 1851925] Re: Fresh install of aptitude is broken - missing dependency?

2019-11-10 Thread NeilGreenwood
That was indeed the problem, which is why i marked this bug as invalid.

libsigc++-2.0-0v5 was damaged, along with some other library packages.

Reinstalling libdouble-conversion1 solved the problem. Not sure why it was

sudo apt install --reinstall libsigc++-2.0-0v5

this fixed it. Not a problem with aptitude. It seems I have a couple of
problems with installed library packages after a fresh install.

[Bug 1243078] [NEW] Mouse pointer not displayed unless mouse attached

2013-10-22 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

I have an Ubuntu machine that is running synergyc. I connect it to a
Windows 7 synergy server.

After a reboot, there is no mouse pointer displayed when I move the
mouse in the appropriate direction from the synergy server. I can see
buttons display their mouse-over animation, launcher icons display their
tooltips, and I can click all widgets (although clicking the intended
one is difficult).

Without logging off, I connected a mouse. The pointer was displayed. I
disconnected the mouse, and the pointer remained, even responding
correctly to the synergy mouse events.

I saw the expected behaviour before upgrading to saucy.

[Bug 1217730] [NEW] lxc-create help text error

2013-08-28 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

There is a typo in the output of
  lxc-create --help

specifically the --lxcpath line has 2 issues:
1 It should start -P, --lxcpath
2 It says patch instead of path

$ lxc-create --help
usage: lxc-create -n NAME [-f CONFIG_FILE] [-t TEMPLATE] [FS_OPTIONS] --
 [-P lxcpath] [TEMPLATE_OPTIONS]

where FS_OPTIONS is one of:
  -B none
  -B dir [--dir rootfs_dir]
  -B lvm [--lvname LV_NAME] [--vgname VG_NAME] [--fstype FS_TYPE]
[--fssize FS_SIZE]
  -B btrfs

Create a new container on the system.

Options:
-n NAMEspecify the name of the container
-f CONFIG_FILE use an existing configuration file
-t TEMPLATEuse an accessible template script
-B BACKING_STORE alter the container backing store (default: none)
--lxcpath path specify an alternate container patch (default:
/var/lib/lxc)
--lvname LV_NAME specify the LVM logical volume name
  (default: container name)
--dir ROOTFS_DIR specify path for custom rootfs directory location
--vgname VG_NAME specify the LVM volume group name (default: lxc)
--fstype FS_TYPE specify the filesystem type (default: ext4)
--fssize FS_SIZE specify the filesystem size (default: 500M)

To see template-specific options, specify a template. For example:
  lxc-create -t ubuntu -h

I have looked at the package source, and I can see that lxc-create.in
needs the changes, but I don't know how to go about making them. I am
very keen to help if I can.

[Bug 1175479] Re: Using PAC file does not set http_proxy env variable

2013-06-26 Thread NeilGreenwood
Thanks for the reply.

I am not positive that it should set the http_proxy environment
variable, but I am definitely seeing applications not seeming to use the
PAC file when trying to connect to the internet.

I've downloaded the source for libproxy, but I can't really see how the
tests work in order to make a start on debugging the problem. I'm not a
C++ developer and I'm not familiar with CMake, but I am a professional
developer. Any guidance you can provide would be appreciated.

[Bug 1191784] [NEW] rhythmbox playback stops after dragging song-position slider

2013-06-17 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

Not sure this is a gstreamer problem, but that was chosen by ubuntu-bug.

Steps to reproduce:
1. I have a play queue set up.
2. While playing a song, I use the song-position slider to move within the
track.
3. That track finishes playing, and the next track is selected.
4. The new track plays a short (sub-second) fragment, then playback stops.

I can resume playback of this track by dragging the song-position slider
to the left or to the right (I think I have to move it more than one
second to the right though). However, the next track will have the same
problem.

I can resume correct playback of all tracks in the play queue by
stopping and restarting rhythmbox.

[Bug 1188501] [NEW] lxc-execute fails to start container without rootfs

2013-06-07 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

I get the following output when trying to start a container just running
bash as an app:

$ sudo lxc-execute --name test /bin/bash
lxc-execute: Permission denied - failed to change apparmor profile to
lxc-container-default
lxc-execute: invalid sequence number 1. expected 4

[Bug 1175479] [NEW] Using PAC file does not set http_proxy env variable

2013-05-02 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

I have a moderately complicated (66 line) PAC file, configured in the
Network Settings applet using the automatic method with a HTTP URL. I've
seen the same/similar behaviour on previous versions of Ubuntu.

This doesn't set the http_proxy environment variable, so I am unable to
access the internet as all applications try to connect directly. I'm
attaching an obfuscated version of the PAC file, and I'm keen to help
debug this issue.

I've worked around the problem to gain internet access by setting the
proxy manually, but this doesn't set up the exceptions specified by the
PAC.

[Bug 1083998] [NEW] Choosing nvidia proprietary driver fails when module is blacklisted

2012-11-28 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

I chose to use the NVidia driver (nvidia-current) in the Additional
Drivers tab of the software sources (which I'm guessing is still
provided by jockey - if not, the package is wrong for this bug).

This installed the driver, I rebooted and got the lightdm login screen.
After logging in I saw an error dialog about trying different video
modes and being unsuccessful, over the top of the background image.
There was nothing else displayed on the screen, and only one of my 2
monitors had any output, the other being in powersave.

After clicking the Close button on the error dialog, nothing except the
background image was displayed. Eventually I discovered that right-
clicking brought up a menu that would allow me to open a terminal among
other options (nautilus right-click menu?). I found out that the nvidia-
current driver was not being used.

After lots of investigation and swapping between nouveau and nvidia-
current drivers, I discovered that there was a /etc/modprobe.d
/blacklist-local.conf which contained the single line blacklist
nvidia_current.

I would expect that upon choosing to use the proprietary driver, a check would
be made for a blacklist of the module that is being chosen (also a check for
the nouveau blacklist if restoring that driver), and a warning message
displayed or a prompt to remove the blacklist.

[Bug 978604] Re: Banshee/Rhythmbox regularly stop playing audio when left on in the background

2012-07-10 Thread NeilGreenwood
I've found that using the cursor keys on the track progress slider (or
dragging the slider a little) often starts the track playing again, but
then audio often (but not every time) drops out at about 11 seconds in.
It can be restored by moving the slider back a little again. Normally
the rest of the track is then fine. I have crossfade disabled.

Multiple entries are displayed, none of which are the Edit

whether I use the mouse or keyboard to select an option, I'm unable to
get to the Empathy preferences.

If I change the search string in HUD to Prefer, I only see 2
Preferences options - one for Dropbox and one for indicator-multiload,
both of which are running as indicator apps (i.e. by the clock on the
top right, I think I have the name right).

[Bug 982956] [NEW] HUD won't show main window menu options when a chat window has focus

2012-04-16 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

I had the Empathy main window (with the list of contacts) open but not
focussed, and was in a chat window. I showed the HUD to try to change
the theme, but neither theme nor preferences brought up the main
Empathy window's menu list. I ended up with the Preferences from an
indicator app (dropbox) instead.

[Bug 982954] [NEW] launcher intermittently doesn't appear when auto-hide is on

2012-04-16 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

I have a single monitor setup, with the launcher set to auto-hide. I've
left the sensitivity at the default value. I have sticky edges switched
on too.

Occasionally when I try to show the launcher with the mouse, it won't
pop out. I see the shadow appear, so maybe it's showing a single pixel
or something. The Super key shows it normally, and after repeated tries
it normally starts working again. It could be something to do with the
velocity and the sticky edges, I'm not sure.

Re: [Bug 349767] Re: external USB hard drive disconnects

2011-02-04 Thread NeilGreenwood
I found yesterday that I could log out then unplug/plug the drive
after it disconnected. Bit quicker than rebooting.

Sent from my iPod

get it working. Only after a reboot did it work again. I noticed a few

just get the first four lines of what I've reproduced below. I'm not
sure if what is below is related to mpd or related to the drive, so
apologies in advance if this post isn't helpful to the discussion. The
details for this drive are given in post #47.

[Bug 664563] [NEW] qRFCView should display GZipped files correctly

2010-10-21 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qrfcview

The packages containing RFCs in the repositories install GZipped text
files. qRFCView displays binary data when selecting these files.

It would be much more useful if the app would uncompress the file
automatically (either using the file extension or using 'file' to detect
the compression).

I think the change needs to go in mdichild.cpp, but I'm not a C++/Qt
programmer.

I'm also not seeing the problem fixed. I had to 'killall gnome-panel'

stopping Rhythmbox. The icon was shown in the notification area but

I've installed the lucid-proposed versions of libdbusmenu-glib1 and
libdbusmenu-gtk1. It seems to be better, but I need to do more testing
before I can confirm this bug is fixed.

[Bug 177965] Re: Multiple Song Properties update problem

2010-07-19 Thread NeilGreenwood
Steps to reproduce:

1. select multiple songs in rhythmbox browser (not sure if it's important, but
one of those selected was playing at the time)
2. right click and choose properties
3. change the Genre field
4. click OK button
5. multiple error dialogs appear. I had 5 in total (for 15 songs selected). 4
had the same message, something like The update failed. The other had a
message something like G-Streamer problem. Report a bug.

I expected the update to complete with no errors shown, or at least more
details in the (*single*) error dialog that would help me resolve the
problem if I made a mistake.

I forgot to say, I had to force-quit rhythmbox after the errors
appeared.

Rhythmbox showed the same 5 error dialogs again when I restarted it. The
first error message mentioned an internal stream problem (I wish I'd
taken a screenshot now).

[Bug 576309] Re: usb-creator does not support block sectors larger than 512 bytes, provides inaccurate error

2010-06-18 Thread NeilGreenwood
I have a Flash/USB stick with 2k sectors, so I can test any changes. I'd
need help to know where to start to make changes though.

Interestingly, unetbootin wrote the image to the USB stick, but it

[Bug 594488] [NEW] package flashplugin-installer 10.1.53.64ubuntu0.10.04.1 cannot install/upgrade over proxy

2010-06-15 Thread NeilGreenwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

I noticed Flash wasn't working in Firefox after installing updates. I typed
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure flashplugin-installer
in a terminal. It then tried to download
http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_10.1.53.64.orig.tar.gz
without making use of the configured http_proxy.

I was able to wget that file successfully in the same terminal. I
managed to get the package to install by hard-coding my proxy settings
at line 65 of /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-installer.postinst, when it
writes a temporary wgetrc file. However, the http_proxy variable was not
set when that script was run.

[Bug 576309] [NEW] Wrong error message for failed creation

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator
