[Bug 1900334] Re: [snap] Mouse pointer theme not honoured

2020-10-19 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Okay, to there are two separate issues here. I'd swear there was already
a bug report for the tiny cursor with 200% scaling, but I can't find it
now. Would you mind filing a new bug for that issue, while we track the
theming issue here? (sorry for the additional paperwork, but it's much
easier for tracking purposes later on)

I can observe the theming issue with Whiteglass. It looks like that
cursor theme isn't included in the gtk-common-themes snap. I fiddled
with the snap to try and add it, but without success. This needs further
investigation.

[Bug 1900334] Re: Mouse pointer theme not honoured

2020-10-19 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Ben: the animated GIF in the bug description shows an issue with the
cursor size, not the theming itself. Can you share a capture that
illustrates the theming issue? What cursor theme are you using? And what
is your screen resolution?

[Bug 1900170] [NEW] apport hook looks for snap profile folder in the wrong place

2020-10-16 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

Since https://git.launchpad.net/~chromium-team/chromium-browser/+git
/snap-from-source/commit/?id=d7e3b7f8, the default profile directory for
the chromium snap was moved from $SNAP_USER_DATA to $SNAP_USER_COMMON
(to mitigate the effects of bug #1616650).

But the apport hook in the transitional deb package wasn't updated
accordingly.

[Bug 1899478] Re: Personal Certificate Not Migrated to Snap-Based Chromium

2020-10-15 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Thanks for the report Gunter.

Just to make sure I understand correctly the problem: we're talking
about certificates that chromium shows at chrome://settings/certificates
?

You had some personal certificates there in Ubuntu 18.04, and after
upgrading to 20.04 they are not there any longer?

Were your other chromium settings (current browsing session, history,
passwords) correctly imported in the upgrade?

[Bug 1899620] [NEW] Going back to change the installer's language doesn't update the default keyboard layout

2020-10-13 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

I'm testing the groovy daily ISO, and while running through
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/testcases/1469/info I noticed this
minor bug:

 * In the installer's first page, select your language of choice, then click
"Install Ubuntu"
 * Verify that the keyboard layout selected by default matches your language
 * Click the back button and select a different language, then click "Continue"

Expected result: the keyboard layout selected by default has changed to
match your new language selection

Actual result: the selected keyboard layout remains the same.

[Bug 1797861] Re: Screen reader doesn't read installer's GUI during a live session installation

2020-10-13 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Confirming this bug with today's groovy (20.10) daily image
(20201013.1).

The screen reader initially works in the installer (first nine steps of
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/testcases/1309/info), but then when
launching the installer again in the live session, orca doesn't read
anything in the installer. Orca hasn't crashed, it's running and able to
read the content of other applications.

[Bug 1895643] Re: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS

2020-09-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Thanks Timo for test-building thunderbird 78 for bionic and focal.
Given that 78 is a major new version, I was waiting for the dust to settle
before backporting. Now that 78.3.0 is out, it seems to time is right to work
on this.

[Bug 1895199] Re: web apps no longer launch into separate windows

2020-09-21 Thread Olivier Tilloy
I tested this in a 18.04 VM, and I cannot observe the problem. When
creating a webapp launcher, there's a checkbox to decide whether the
shortcut should open in its own separate window, or as a new tab in an
existing chromium window. This preference appears to be respected.

[Bug 1893650] Re: Chromium snap causes network traffic. (Duh!)

2020-08-31 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Thanks for the report rew.
For testing purposes, could you download the google chrome installer from
google.com/chrome, install it and test whether it is behaving similarly? That
would be a useful data point. Thanks!

2020-08-31 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Please note that an update of chromium-browser to version 85.0.4183.83
should be available very soon in the Ubuntu repositories. I would
appreciate if you could comment on this bug when you get the update to
let me know whether chromium-browser still works. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1892724] Re: Bump package epoch to 1 to ensure working upgrade path and transition to snap

2020-08-31 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Verified working.
For convenience I used a slightly different testing method than the test case
in the bug description: I downloaded and installed (with `dpkg -i`) the
chromium-browser, chromium-browser-l10n and chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra debs
from
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-chromium-builds/+archive/ubuntu/stage/+sourcepub/11549449/+listing-archive-extra
(version 85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.18.04.1, currently awaiting sponsoring to
bionic-security) in a fully up-to-date focal VM. I then ran `sudo apt update`
to verify that no update was available for chromium-browser. I then enabled
focal-proposed for universe and verified that the update to chromium-browser
1:85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 was available, installed it with `sudo apt
install chromium-browser`, and checked that this installed the chromium snap as
expected. I then verified that chromium-browser launches and works as expected.

[Bug 1893484] Re: Google Chrome 85.0.4183.83 crahses with SIGSEGV

2020-08-31 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Chrome is distributed by Google, not Ubuntu, so the crash should be
reported upstream, at https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/entry.

Is chromium-browser (the package distributed and maintained by Ubuntu)
similarly affected?

[Bug 1892146] Re: [snap] Deleting the ~/snaps folder breaks Gnome dash window tracking for chromium

2020-08-28 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Ok, so the issue with the launcher is that your favourite for Chromium
is 'chromium-browser.desktop', whereas it should be
'chromium_chromium.desktop'.

If you have the chromium-browser deb package installed, running /usr/bin
/chromium-browser (just once) should translate the desktop file name. If
not, you can modify its value by hand with this command:

gsettings set org.gnome.shell favorite-apps "['thunderbird.desktop',
'libreoffice-writer.desktop', 'libreoffice-calc.desktop',
'org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop', 'chromium_chromium.desktop',
'org.gnome.Screenshot.desktop', 'org.gnome.Calculator.desktop']"

Please let us know if that fixes the problem for you.

[Bug 1892724] Re: Bump package epoch to 1 to ensure working upgrade path and transition to snap

2020-08-26 Thread Olivier Tilloy
** Description changed:

+ As a follow-up to bug #1889106, it was decided that the best solution to
handle recurring version bumps for chromium-browser updates in stable series
was to bump the package epoch to 1.
+ See the discussion in
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2020-August/041127.html.
+ This needs to be done in groovy (done) and SRUed to focal.
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ Users upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04 will not get the latest chromium snap
replacing the chromium-browser deb package as intended as soon as a security
update is published to bionic-security (which happens typically every 2-3
weeks).
+ This is because the version number in 18.04 often ends up being greater than
the version in 20.04. Bumping the version number in 20.04 is enough to fix
this, and was done a few times already (bug #1858500, bug #1889106), but it is
tedious and impractical.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Ensure that a version of chromium-browser newer than
84.0.4147.105-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 is available in bionic-{security,updates} (not
currently the case, but will soon happen as version 85.0.4183.83 was just
released upstream)
+ * On a machine running 18.04, ensure that the chromium snap is *not*
installed, then install the chromium-browser deb package: sudo apt install
chromium-browser
+ * Upgrade that machine to Ubuntu 20.04
+ * When upgrading, the chromium-browser package becomes a transitional
package that installs the chromium snap
+ * Verify that the chromium snap is installed
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * The chromium snap has some known shortcomings and regressions
+ compared to the deb package, they are being tracked at
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-
+ browser/+bugs?field.tag=snap. Auto-upgrading users from the deb to the
+ snap is the desired behaviour though.
+
+ [Original Description]
+
For a complete rationale, see comments #4, #5, #7 and #8 in bug
#1889106, and the discussion in https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives
  /ubuntu-devel/2020-August/041127.html.

This needs to be done in groovy and SRUed to focal.

2020-08-26 Thread Olivier Tilloy
$SNAP_DATA/policies is not writable by the snap, so the import of existing
policies won't work.
This would have to be implemented in the transitional deb package's postinst
script.

What can be done is to try $SNAP_DATA/policies, and if that folder
doesn't exist fall back to /etc/chromium-browser/policies.

[Bug 1893021] [NEW] Flash plugin symbol lookup error with firefox 80.0+build2 on xenial (gtk_window_set_titlebar)

2020-08-26 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

When testing firefox 80.0+build2 on xenial (from https://launchpad.net
/~ubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages), I'm observing
that the flash plugin (installed by flashplugin-installer) doesn't work.
This appears to affect only xenial, flash is working in the bionic and
focal builds.

This is what I'm seeing when launching firefox from a terminal:

  /usr/lib/firefox/plugin-container: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so: undefined symbol: gtk_window_set_titlebar

This is most likely caused by this recent upstream change:

I cannot reproduce the problem is a stock GNOME session (neither by

whether this is XFCE-specific?

[Bug 1892146] Re: [snap] Deleting the ~/snaps folder breaks Gnome dash window tracking for chromium

2020-08-25 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Indeed, deleting the ~/snap folder isn't a reasonable use case, it will
break much more than just window tracking (for starters it will remove
your entire chromium profile, including bookmarks and navigation
history, which you most likely don't want).

That said, I can't seem to reproduce the bug. After deleting the ~/snap
folder and restarting chromium, the window is mapped to the launcher
icon as expected.

What is the output of the following command on your system?

gsettings get org.gnome.shell favorite-apps

[Bug 1888380] Re: Give better experience of migration of deb to snap

2020-08-25 Thread Olivier Tilloy
If a user installs the chromium-browser package afresh, without any
existing profile, I would argue that they don't care that the browser is
packaged as a snap, because they haven't used it before (not on that
machine at least).

Manually installing chromium-browser with apt does display messages that
hint at what happens under the hood, typically:

=> Installing the chromium snap

and

=> Snap installation complete
