I got the problem fixed.
I removed the packages that were installed by the metapackage
ubuntu-restricted-extras.
sudo apt-get remove --purge ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10
-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly liba52-0.7.4 libavcodec52
libavformat52 libavutil49 libdvdnav4

Since I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic I noticed that none of my videos work
anymore, same in all players including VLC. It says that there is no longer the
correct codec to run it :
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format XVID.

Having this exact same issue on a CoreDuo running 9.04. The cpu frequency is
stocked at 1Ghz. The computer is so slow, very annoying bug.

definitely gone.
