I can also confirm Stephens workaround: disabling the floppy drive
(actually not present in my machine) in the BIOS solves the problem.

I confirm this very strange behaviour with the Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic
Koala Alternate CD. My DVD is a NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A 1.04.
And I also confirm that burning the CD ISO on a DVD-R disk SOLVED the
problem.
