For what it's worth, I see a similar difference in dmesg output here also between -12 and -13 kernels. X keeps trying and failing to start in normal mode, falls back into some kind of low-rez safe mode. I captured the dmesg.13 by clicking shut down and falling into a root, text-mode shell.
