I can confirm I'm having the same problem with a similar HP Pavilion
model under Fedora 27. There is no audio from the built in speakers but
pavucontrol shows audio is being played. Verified nothing is muted in
alsamixer.
Headphone jack works as expected.

for HDMI HDP events on one of my machines, this is obviously bad :)
I've attached a perf trace (running on 5.3.0-40-generic) and
I hit the reset button on my computer to escape this GUI prompt. I can
boot up without issue on restart. Its just weird getting stuck like that
