As maintainer of gjots2 I have never had objections of removing mpage.
Gjots used to recommend and now suggest mpage. I will shortly make
further changes. I am not aware of a recommends preventing obsolete
packages from being dropped in the archive. That would have never been
my intention.

Thank you for your report and sorry for your troubles. The Debian bug
you referenced is not what you are experiencing, though, since Chris
confirmed this was gone in the package that was eventually uploaded as
1.4.4-2

That's a known problem that was fixed upstream. But I think it still
affects the version in artful.
