soon. I am back to some serious problems I had previously fixed by
downgrading to feisty. Me trying to help out by testing is now again
leaving me with a machine that completely freezes when switching to a VT

I believe this occurred in xnest previously. I used to start the
flexiserver as gdmflexiserver --xnest -screen 800x600.
But it certainly occurs in xephyr. I removed xnest after learning that
it was quite old and xephyr was the newer variant. I still see the
problem right now.

Turns out that all I had to do was downgrade to xserver-xorg-video-
ati_6.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb to get rid of this bug. No changes to the

I believe I have seen this exact same problem as well. Currently, I
work around this and two other serious problems I had (bug 148408 and
bug 187967) with the gutsy version by just downgrading xserver-xorg-
video-ati to feisty.
I will try out the latest versions from hardy, recompiled for gutsy (my
ppa or that from Tormod).
My computer is a Thinkpad X24 with a Radeon M6 LY graphics chip.

I am experiencing similar problems on my Thinkpad X24. I can reliably
reproduce this problem by switching to VT 1 with Ctrl+Alt+1. The
computer totally freezes, not even Ctrl+Alt+Delete do anything. Pinging

Thank you Timo, for your comment. I attach for your information
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and my /etc/X11/xorg.conf (cleaned from empty
lines and comments). AFAICS, there is nothing suspicious in
Xorg.0.log.old and as I said, the problem also occurs with an empty
xorg.conf.

upgraded to gutsy. Feisty was still fine. Removing xorg.conf and
restarting X is no solution either. So, it is not a configuration
issue.
