This was due to a quoting error in debian/rules in 3.6.3. What's being
expanded there is:

'$(shell date -s @$(SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH))'

Nothing to do with NTP.

[Bug 1519331] Re: Postfix cannot resolve DNS if network was unavailable when it was started, such as on a laptop

2022-01-05 Thread Scott Kitterman
It's postfix@$INSTANCE.  If you don't have multi-instance setup, the
default instance is "-", so you would look for postfix@-, not postfix@.
This is discussed in README.Debian. You should probably file a new bug
for this problem if you don't get it figured out.

No. The glibc change isn't incorporated. It would be nice if someone from a
distro (like Ubuntu) that has applied the patch would talk to upstream about
it and get them to incorporate it. I don't plan to add it as a patch unless
Debian actually needs it, which we don't so far.

2021-12-29 Thread Scott Kitterman
This is an unneeded leftover and the file in the chroot
(/var/spool/postfix) can be deleted.

When using smtp*_tls_CAfile, the smtp or smtpd daemon copies from
/etc/ssl/certs before entering the chroot (CApath is different), so it
doesn't need to be there. We stopped copying the file into the chroot
in 3.4.7-1, but didn't clean up the old one. I've committed a change to
the Debian postfix git repository, which will be in the next Debian
upload, to do this.

So I looked into this a bit more and based on
http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#smtp_tls_CAfile is doesn't appear
to me that the ca-certificates.crt file needs to be in the chroot at
all. What happens if you just delete the chroot copy? Looking in the
git history, I can see we used to install this file into the chroot, but
I'm not sure we needed to.

2021-12-22 Thread Scott Kitterman
Incorporation of this patch in postfix upstream is currently being
discussed on the postfix-users mailing list. The specific question
asked by Wietse is:

Has this been adopted, or do people on 3.5.* still have to tinker with
their /etc/resolv.conf files?

If anyone from Ubuntu could comment on that, it would be great.

2021-11-23 Thread Scott Kitterman
I'm open to putting a fix in Debian. I haven't come up with a solution
that I'm happy with and don't currently have a lot of time to work on
this.

I think Paride Legovini's "wall-of-text" post is on the right track, but
I would really prefer to avoid asking a question about this.

Anything in configure-instance.sh needs to be init system agnostic. I
don't mind a systemd specific solution since that's our default init,
but not in configure-instance.sh (no idea if there is one, but that's a
boundary condition to a proper fix in my view).

If someone comes up with a patch, I can test it and will be glad to land
it in Debian if suitable and functional.

This did not used to be the case for micro-releases where the TB approved the
micro-release exception (as is the case here). Back when I was doing this for
Ubuntu it was enough that the postfix passed it's test suite and it had been
smoke tested on a real system.

We do these updates in Debian routinely without anything more than that and
have never had a problem. I'd find it surprising that Ubuntu was being more
restrictive about post-release updates than Debian.

[Bug 1657024] Re: mydomain gets set to "localdomain"

2020-06-11 Thread Scott Kitterman
I looked into the history of this. We used to have a patch in Debian to
use gethostbyname to address this issue. It was dropped because it
caused worse problems. Here's the relevant code snippet from the most
recent postfix release:

/*
 * If the local machine name is not in FQDN form, try to append the
 * contents of $mydomain. Use a default domain as a final workaround.
 *
 * DO NOT CALL GETHOSTBYNAME OR GETNAMEINFO HERE - IT MAKES EVERY POSTFIX
 * PROGRAM HANG WHEN DNS SERVICE IS UNAVAILABLE. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE
 * DEFAULT, THEN EDIT MAIN.CF.
 */
name = get_hostname();
/* DO NOT CALL GETHOSTBYNAME OR GETNAMEINFO HERE - EDIT MAIN.CF */
if ((dot = strchr(name, '.')) == 0) {
/* DO NOT CALL GETHOSTBYNAME OR GETNAMEINFO HERE - EDIT MAIN.CF */
if ((domain = mail_conf_lookup_eval(VAR_MYDOMAIN)) == 0)
domain = DEF_MYDOMAIN;
/* DO NOT CALL GETHOSTBYNAME OR GETNAMEINFO HERE - EDIT MAIN.CF */
name = concatenate(name, ".", domain, (char *) 0);
}
/* DO NOT CALL GETHOSTBYNAME OR GETNAMEINFO HERE - EDIT MAIN.CF */
return (name);

So the way to resolve this issue is to edit main.cf as people have
indicated they are doing. "Fixing" this in postfix is not something we
should do.

In that case, someone with the new libc and postfix 3.4.11/3.5.2 or later

that the upstream developers did not have access to a system with the new libc

That change is included in postfix 3.4.11 which is, of course, just
after the one that's in 20.04. "Someone" (i.e. not me) should look into
an SRU to update postfix. It has an existing microversion release
authorization from the Tech Board, so it shouldn't be too hard, it just
takes someone involved in Ubuntu development to turn the crank on the
process.

It's impossible to know, but I think the case for changing a long-term default
needs to be stronger than "I wasn't paying attention when I installed the
package and it caused problems". That may sound harsh, but that's how it
comes across to me. No configuration is an option. If I am understanding
correctly, all you had to do was select it.

The current default for postfix has been there approximately forever. I don't
intend to change it in Debian, so if you take it up in Ubuntu, you'd have to
maintain the diff. While I understand the theory of the bug, I think that
changing a long standing default would also be very surprising to many users
and should generally be avoided.

[Bug 1834511] Re: policyd-spf crashes on UnicodeEncodeError

2019-06-27 Thread Scott Kitterman
That's correct. It was fixed in 2.0.0, but I'm not sure the fix would
directly apply to 1.3.2. I've targeted the bug appropriately for 16.04.
Perhaps someone involved in Ubuntu development will take a look.

This is not a bug, but an intentional design change to, by default,
better protect user privacy. See man 5 policyd-spf.conf for details.

postfix-devel is generally for developers of postfix. Users should use
postfix-users (even for code issues like this). The postfix developers are

This is maintained by one of the primary postfix developers:

There is no postfix bugtracker upstream. Did you mail the postfix-users

[Bug 1767539] [NEW] Security fixes from 0.12.5 require backfit to earlier releases

2018-04-27 Thread Scott Kitterman
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

A recent upstream release contains two security fixes. All supported
Ubuntu releases are affected.

  * SECURITY UPDATE: quasselcore, corruption of heap metadata caused by
qdatastream
- debian/patches/Implement_custom_deserializer.patch: Original patch from
  upstream 0.12.5 release, adapted for non-C++ 11 systems by Felix Geyer
- CVE requested by upstream
  * SECURITY UPDATE: quasselcore, denial of service for unconfigure core
- debian/patches/Reject_clients_that_attempt_to_login_before_the_core_is
  _configured.patch: Original patch from upstream 0.12.5 release, adapted
  for non-C++ 11 systems by Felix Geyer
- CVE requested by upstream

I'll be attaching a debdiff for Trusty, but not later releases as that
is the only Ubuntu release I still have an interest in. Note that the
debian/changelog doesn't have the LP bug number in it since I haven't
filed it yet. The trusty fix is based on the Debian patches for Jessie
(Debian 8):

https://salsa.debian.org/qt-kde-team/kde-extras/quassel/tree/jessie

I'm running the fixed version now.

Re: [Bug 1709504] [NEW] Postfix Files that shouldn't be writable.

2017-08-08 Thread Scott Kitterman
It was fixed in Debian later, but it's harmless. Because these are symlinks
(which the script doesn't follow), the permissions it detects aren't the
actual permissions. The 'fix' is not to emit the warnings for this. You can
ignore them.

That was the advice I got from the Debian systemd maintainers (that the impact
would be negligible).

I tested this and if you're using NetworkManager at least there's some magic
that happens which causes systemd to restart postfix once the network is
available. Part of the reason I was having so much trouble replicating
problems others were seeing was getting NM to quit 'helping' as the test
system I was using also has a desktop installed.

According to the Debian systemd people, the systemd-resolved is superfluous.
It's nss-lookup.target that I wanted all along.

There's a very helpful (at least for me) discussion in the last few entries in
the Debian bug. Reviewing that would be better advice than I have for what's
safe/not as I cribbed from Michael Biebl's suggestions after just enough
research to be able to convince myself I wasn't cargo culting.
