[Bug 799202] Re: wacom stylus jumps with latest xserver-xorg-core

2011-07-28 Thread Shaved Wookie
Ok. I just tried and

This bug is NOT FIXED in Oneiric.

I have pressure sensitivity, but I still get the jumps and ghost lines.
It's a completely fresh and updated install. Vanilla in all other ways,
using latest compiled Krita from master.

[Bug 762938] Re: Wacom Pressure broken with Qt applications

2011-05-31 Thread Shaved Wookie
Looks like we have a snag.

Both Animtim and I get the same problem. With the PPA, wacom returns
strange results. You can see this in Krita, in the way that every stroke
drawn doesn't start where the stylus actually is, but from some point to
the top left corner (presumably 0,0) to the point where the stylus first
makes contact. It's very odd, and yet it can be fixed instantly by
purging the PPA. Strokes drawn with another device, like the mouse are
not affected.

[Bug 672564] [NEW] Kernel hangs roughly every 5-20 minutes since getting a fresh Maverick install

2010-11-08 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Lucid worked fine on this system, however since wiping over it with a
vanilla install of Kubuntu Maverick 32 bit, every 5-20 minutes the
kernel just hangs. I say it's the kernel as even Alt+Sysrq+RSEINUB does
nothing. Anything animating on screen freezes and any audio playing
stops, ruling out it being something like just being the mouse and
keyboard.

If you look at the kern.log, the last hang happened at 8:45 on Nov 8
(today) and there seems to be a number of stack traces and similar in
there, however I lack any skill to read them. The system was only just
installed, and so is very close to vanilla. The only real changes have
been updating all packages in the standard repo's and using nomodeset
and radeon.modeset=0 as KMS seemed to make things run very sluggish.

Xorg also restarts frequently (whenever I type a URL in rekonq, or come
out of full screen video playback), although I think this is a separate
problem as the kernel doesn't lock up in that case.

Touch also doesn't work, however I read that this is a known problem
from part of the driver being accidentally left out at the last minute
by Ayuthia, and I haven't bothered to run his fix yet. Just mentioning
in case it's related.

I'll try the upstream kernel and see how that goes. Any other questions
/ suggestions welcome.

[Bug 492782] Re: Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume)

2010-10-19 Thread Shaved Wookie
Otto - I was getting this problem on KDE and don't have Gnome installed
at all, so I don't think it's gnome specific. Admittedly I didn't get it
for months and then just got it once a few weeks back. If it's not the
desktop environment, and it's not the video driver / hardware, then that
suggests to me that it's probably something X / Kernel related.

[Bug 368061] Re: auto-login won't work

2010-08-18 Thread Shaved Wookie
Yup. I'm here for the same reason. Encrypted homedir. Chose auto-login.
Now I get the same error message above.

I understand the (valid) reasons) for this not working, but concur with
the commenter above that the auto login feature should be greyed out
with a note / tooltip explaining why.

[Bug 564420] Re: No tablet pressure in KDE / QT apps, GTK apps work fine

2010-05-30 Thread Shaved Wookie
Interestingly I was getting this problem on Archlinux until I upgraded
to QT 4.7.0-Beta 1 and then it dissapeared. I've got QT 4.7.0-Beta 1 on
Kubuntu though and it still doesn't work, so I suspect that the basic
problem is fixed but that there's still need for some config fun.

2010-05-10 Thread Shaved Wookie
I get this when I suspend to ram and then resume. As in the above report
ctrl+f1, ctrl+f7 fixes the problem as does typing in a text document.

I'm using Kubuntu Lucid Final 32bit on an AMD64 processor with an ATI
HD4850 running the FOSS ati driver. I didn't have this on karmic,
either.

This is an error introduced since Lucid Final, not an error fixed by it.

[Bug 564420] [NEW] No tablet pressure in KDE / QT apps, GTK apps work fine

2010-04-16 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qt-sdk

WHAT I EXPECTED:
Working pressure from my tablet stylus in both QT/KDE apps and GTK apps.

WHAT HAPPENS:
Only GTK apps (eg Gimp, Mypaint etc) work perfectly with tablet pressure. QT
apps (Krita / QT's wacom widget etc) still respond to cursor movement and
clicks, but have no pressure.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Draw a line in Krita with pressure turned on in the painttop configuration
window. Krita has no tablet configuration, relying solely on QT. Pressure
doesn't show. Ditto QT's wacom widget.

TECH SPECS:
Dell Latitude XT running Kubuntu Lucid AMD 64, QT 4.6.2 KDE 4.4.2

PATCH:
Apparently this was patched in Fedora by tzander of Koffice. The patch is from
the resulting bug report on QT at:

[Bug 542357] Re: upgrade from karmic to lucid: gui is crashing on login

2010-04-15 Thread Shaved Wookie
I'm getting this on a machine with: Kubuntu Lucid AMD 64, Radeon HD 4850
running ATI driver.

Lucid Beta 2 live cd works fine, but my installed version (which worked
fine a few weeks ago until I updated recently) gets to KDM and then just
stops. Mouse and Keyboard don't *seem* to respond, however Alt+SysRq+RSE
drops me to a working root shell.

The only real uncommon errors I can see in kdm.log / Xorg.0.log are:

Kcrash: Application 'KDMgreet' is crashing...

and shortly after:

Error setting MTRR (base = xd000, size = 0x1, type = 1)
Inappropriate IOCTL for device (25)
DDXSigGiveUp: Closing Log
drKonqi: cannot connect to X server 0.0

Please let me know if there's any info I can provide to help.

2010-04-15 Thread Shaved Wookie
Just remembered... Two details that may / may not be important:

1. I boot with radeon.modeset=0 as I just get a black screen otherwise
2. This machine is also running xorg-edgers ppa

I understand that xorg-edgers is unsupported, but thought it worth
adding in case the original poster was using X-E as well.

[Bug 510311] Re: Touchscreen working on Lucid Alpha 2, Breaks with Recent Upgrades

2010-04-07 Thread Shaved Wookie
Having updated and restarted today, it seems to give stylus tracking and
clicks, but no pressure (in GTK and QT apps). Touch moves the cursor,
but doesn't seem to register clicks. When I use a self compiled hid-
ntrig.ko for myself, I get pressure in GTK apps and touch clicks, but
currently I only have what's delivered by the packages.

Not sure if there's any specific xorg.conf(.d) / udev thats needed for
this setup.

Is there any info I can provide that would help?

2010-03-26 Thread Shaved Wookie
Ok, thanks for the kick in the pants to get this posted. Anyway, I
digress...

I did, in fact, get the touchscreen and stylus working, but only by following
the instructions for Lucid here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1252492

This compiles a new hid-ntrig.ko module as well as changing 10-wacom.fdi
As far as I can see multitouch isn't working, but is being worked on by
Ayuthia / Favux / Rayfir. My hid-ntrig.ko is the one posted by Ubuntiac
(see the link in post#1).

My current (working) xorg.0.log is attached. Let me know if you'd like
me to remove these changes and post that xorg.0.log as well.

[Bug 411760] Re: Quick Access uses the up one directory icon instead of Home icon

2010-02-12 Thread Shaved Wookie
This is the quicklaunch widget, which is default on every install of
Kubuntu. It is one of the first things a new user sees when they login /
boot a live CD. It is used to quickly browse folders on your computer.

The icon in question is the up arrow in the top left corner. It acts
exactly as the Home icon does in a web browser, taking you back to
wherever you started, thus it should really be the Home icon. An up
arrow in file browsing, typically is interpreted as go up one folder
level. It does not do this. I have seen countless new users assume it
does, and be surprised when they jump to a completely different folder.

[Bug 510311] Re: Touchscreen working on Lucid Alpha 2, Breaks with Recent Upgrades

2010-01-29 Thread Shaved Wookie
No improvement so far. I can give logs if needed.

Quick question:

How do I actually try xf86-input-wacom? It's listed at
packages.ubuntu.com as being in main, but Kpackagekit / Synaptic / Apt
don't see any package by that name after updating. I found it on
launchpad, but https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xf86-input-wacom
looks like it is only used to build xserver-xorg-input-wacom, which I
already had installed.

So does this mean I already have xf86-input-wacom? Is there something
else I need to do to try it? Does this new system need a .fdi file?

[Bug 510311] Re: Touchscreen working on Lucid Alpha 2, Breaks with Recent Upgrades

2010-01-28 Thread Shaved Wookie
Thanks Bryce,

I felt pretty presumptuous second guessing you when your little finger
knows more about X than I'll likely learn in the next decade! Glad to
hear I wasn't entirely insane (at least this time).

xf86-input-wacom doesn't seem to have made it down the line yet, in fact
after updating and searching for wacom, it still only sees the xserver-
xorg-input-wacom package. I'm guessing it's just still on its way. I'm
in the process of doing a 50 package update at the moment though, so
I'll let you know how that goes.

Thanks again for your help!

[Bug 510311] Re: Touchscreen working on Lucid Alpha 2, Breaks with Recent Upgrades

2010-01-21 Thread Shaved Wookie
I don't pretend to know anything about this area. I am curious though,
why would an input device problem would be assigned to the ati video
driver?

I looked through XOrg.0.log and found a whole bunch of references to the
wacom module not being found. That led me to noticing that xserver-xorg-
input-wacom having not installed properly. It complains of needing
xserver-core = 2:1.6.2. Strangely, the installed version
2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu9 doesn't seem to register as being sufficient, and
so xserver-xorg-input-wacom fails to install, which looks like the root
of the problem to me.

I assume that there is some kind of packaging problem blocking the
needed dependencies, and that when xserver-xorg-input-wacom / xserver-
core are updated that the wacom module will be installable solving this.

...or I could be wildly, brazenly, completely wrong. :-)

[Bug 510311] [NEW] Touchscreen working on Lucid Alpha 2, Breaks with Recent Upgrades

2010-01-20 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Not sure if this is a Xorg bug, a HAL bug, a devicekit bug or a kernel
bug, but here goes:

When I installed Kubuntu Lucid Alpha 2 (alternate cd) on my Dell
Latitude XT my touchscreen worked without any configuration (at least
mouse movement and clicking). It worked the next day after reboot, but
after upgrading all packages on Monday the 18'th and rebooting the
touchscreen no longer works. I'm guessing this has something to do with
the removal of HAL, but the thing that has me curious is that the
touchscreen still seems to be registering in both /dev/input/mouse1 and
/dev/input/mice. Despite this (and the touchpad, pointer nipple and usb
mouse all working) it just doesn't seem to influence the cursor at all.

By the way, by working I'm only referring to using the screen in
single touch, mouse mode, not n-trig's multitouch (although I'm looking
forward to getting that working eventually :)

Thought I should let you guys know as the touchscreens are fairly
unusual technology rapidly becoming more popular.

Let me know what other info I can provide to help.

[Bug 500205] [NEW] Dolphin in 4.4 Betas 12 Fails to mount internal drives other than root

2009-12-24 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dolphin

I have a couple of drives other than the root one. Dolphin in KDE 4.3.4 mounted
them with a single click on the Places icon. Since updating to the 4.4 Beta 1
(and subsequently 4.4 Beta 2) packages though, if I try and mount them, dolphin
complains for example:

An error occurred while accessing '88.7 GiB Hard Drive', the system responded:
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.PermissionDenied: Refusing to mount device
/dev/sdb3 for uid=1000

The root drive (ie Home in places) always works fine. I have an EXT4 volume
connected over IDE and an NTFS volume connected over SATA. Both give the error
above, albeit with a different drive name. My 8gig fat32 usb stick seems to
mount fine, and everything worked before the upgrade to 4.4 Beta.

[Bug 500212] [NEW] Nepomuk Semantic Desktop needs the Virtuoso RDF server to store its data.

2009-12-24 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

Since updating to KDE 4.4 Beta 1, my previously working nepomuk now just
spits out the following notification when I log in / try to enable
nepomuk:

Nepomuk Semantic Desktop needs the Virtuoso RDF server to store its
data. Installing the Virtuoso Soprano plugin is mandatory for using
Nepomuk.

I have all packages with soprano in their name (other than -doc -dbg and
-cli) installed. I've tried clearing ~/.kde/share/apps/nepomuk and this
happens both in Karmic and Lucid.

I filed upstream, and Sebastian Trueg (Nepomuk maintainer) said that
Virtuoso Server needed to be installed, although this doesn't seem to
exist in the repositories.

I'm trying this on two systems Kubuntu Karmic AMD 64 and Kubuntu Lucid
AMD64. Both are running KDE 4.4 Beta 2 packages (and had the same
problem with Beta 1).

[Bug 491123] [NEW] No Sound Turns Out to Be: Sound Card's PCM Default Volume is Zero

2009-12-01 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

After having a heck of a time trying to get sound working on my system,
and looking into many exotic configuration files, kernel modules and
hardware testing, I discovered that the real problem was decidedly
simple.

The PCM volume on first install defaults to zero. If I raise it once,
its perfect ever after, so it's just the initial default install
settings that need changing.

[Bug 361693] Re: Aiptek tablet only registers as a mouse in /dev/input

2009-11-29 Thread Shaved Wookie
By the way, wacdump seems to return x/y position, pressure and
touch=down perfectly. When I click the right button or middle button
wacdump registers nothing and the cursor doesn't move, but I'm not too
fussed by that right now. I just want pressure and the ability to
register a tap!

Is it possible to symlink where KDE / x.org are looking for it to where
it's showing up?

Interesting.

I have a similar setup with 1 sata drive and 1 IDE. I wonder if that

though, so no chance of removing it. :)

[Bug 361693] Re: Aiptek tablet only registers as a mouse in /dev/input

2009-11-28 Thread Shaved Wookie
I heard that this is a QT 4.5 issue meets (K)Ubuntu using non-standard
names. I tried installing the experimental QT4.6 packages, but no
change.

My tablet (also a 12000U) seems to register as input 8/mouse 2 and in dmesg I
get:
input: Aiptek as
/devices/pci:00/:00:12.2/usb1/1-6/1-6.3/1-6.3:1.0/input/input8

3 years I've been trying to get this to work. *sigh*

Oh, and the updated packages mentioned at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wacom are outdated as Karmic's default
ones are more recent.

[Bug 482163] [NEW] FUSE refuses to automount NTFS partition on SATA drive

2009-11-13 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

This is a bit of an odd one.

I have an NTFS formatted partition on an IDE drive and FUSE works perfectly
here. (/dev/sdb3)
I have an NTFS formatted partition on a SATA drive, and if it's not set to
automount, I can mount it with either the mount command or by clicking on it in
the file manager and it works perfectly. (/dev/sda1)

But...

If I add /dev/sda1 /media/seagate ntfs defaults 0 0 in fstab to
automount sda1 (the same line that works with sdb3):
* I get all kinds of errors in dmesg along the lines of Buffer I/O.
* If I click on it in the file manager I get Only root can mount /dev/sda1 at
/media/seagate.
* Trying to mount with mount /dev/sda1 gives a message like Error. Could not
get device lock on /dev/sda1 about 5 times.
* If I boot to the recovery prompt, I get an infinite scrolling screenfull of
errors along the lines of FUSE error. Can not mount file system at /dev/sda1
[123456]

fdisk -l does not show sda at all until I manually mount it (which I can only
do by removing the fstab line and rebooting) after which it shows:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 182401 14651360017 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda4 * 1 1 00 Empty

My fstab looks line like: /dev/sda1
/media/seagate ntfs defaults 0 0

I don't see any of these errors if I boot to Jaunty, and I've done a
complete chkdsk and clean shutdown in windows.

This problem is not Nvidia specific.

[Bug 422536] Re: EDAC amd64: WARNING: ECC is NOT currently enabled by the BIOS. Module will NOT be loaded.

2009-10-27 Thread Shaved Wookie
Sure. I can understand that. Just realise that buggy is a relative
term and that there are always acceptable and unacceptable levels of
bugs that differ between release types types (eg alpha vs beta vs RC vs
standard release vs LTS). Every user believes their bug is *the* most
important and *the One* that makes all the difference. Software though
is always advanced by a balance between getting it out in real world
testing with the newer code vs finding the bugs in the current code.
Just look at Vista! ;)

No software ships with 0 bugs.

You just do the best you can to get the most important ones fixed as
soon as possible. In this light, I'm sure that many bugs will be found
and quickly patched as a result of the initial release and updates.
Being fixed before release would be nice. Having the most important bugs
patched as quickly as possible (including this one or not) is more
important.

Anyway, if you'd like to continue this discussion on the forums or
privately, that's fine, but I'd suggest we both leave this bug report
clear for what we both want: getting a solution found and implemented
for this.

Cheers!

[Bug 422536] Re: 6.073813] EDAC amd64: WARNING: ECC is NOT currently enabled by the BIOS. Module will NOT be loaded.

2009-10-21 Thread Shaved Wookie
For me this has gone from rock solid stable a couple of weeks ago, to
the very occasional error message a few days ago, to a nearly unusable
system with no sound, random processes crashing and more. It always
starts with the ECC error message though. From the number of dupes this
is a very common bug, and if my experience turns out to be average, it
may get worse over time.

[Bug 334186] Re: soprano-backend-sesame requires missing /usr/lib/libjvm.so

2009-10-14 Thread Shaved Wookie
Am I the only one here who finds it ironic that the status on this in
Java is New when this problem has been around since at least Feisty?
(That is, Feisty which came out two and a half years ago...)

As an uneducated layperson, it seems that you always have java where you
have soprano, but you don't always have soprano where you have java,
ergo this could be fixed by having an install script with soprano that
found the latest version of java and linked to it. The java package
could also have something that called that same script (if soprano is
installed) to update the linkage for each new java version.

Now if only I knew how to code! ;)

[Bug 426138] Re: [karmic regression] slow and shaky detection and connection of USB 3G Modem

2009-10-10 Thread Shaved Wookie
Might be useful to take a look at what's in those two logs and see if NM
is posting a specific error message repeatedly. That would give us
somewhere to start looking for a fix.

[Bug 448292] [NEW] Novatel U727 (Wireless 3G USB Modem) Shows in lsusb in Jaunty Karmic. Only connects in Jaunty.

2009-10-10 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

NOTE: The logs in this bug report are from my install of Jaunty (which
works, slowly, but it works), where the main problem I'm having is
network-manager not working on Karmic. Since I can't get internet on
Karmic, I figured I'd do the ubuntu-bug call on Jaunty and see what was
needed there. I'll try and add more Karmic info after.

When I plug the Novotel U727 (sold as a Bell Mobile Internet stick in
Canada) into my machine, it takes about 30 seconds to come up and work
in Jaunty, but it never connects in Karmic.

Karmic *does* see it correctly via lsusb.

It identifies as:
