There is an easy workaround that might help to better identify the
origin of the problem.
If you enter the directory where GoogleEarth got installed and simply
eliminate/rename the file libcrypto.so.0.9.8, then it'll work.

I have a Travelmate 4152 and I have the same problem.
Although this hardware is supported by the kernel some time ago (¿one year, one
year and a half?), there are problems ONLY in Ubuntu...
