Downloaded the deb files , ran a sudo dpkg -i *.deb and rebooted. It
seems the modules for the proprietary nvidia drivers were not rebuilt
during the install :/
Luckily I also have a back-ported kernel from natty and I'm running
that.

I downloaded an alpha 3, 64 bit Oneiric image and did all the updates.
It did have updates for cups and related stuff.
The bad:
When firing off th Add printer wizard it suggests Generic goes to
PCL 6 printers and lists the e230 pxlmono driver but recommends the
pxcolor driver.

Hmm, seems that after it's fixed now. There were some update available
that seem unrelated, did a dist-upgrade, cups got configured and seems
to be working.

Yes, I too believe that what's described in bug #1049214 seems to fit
what's happening on screen. Please mark this as a dupe of that bug
report.
On a side-note there was something that caught my eye in the latest
nvidia driver beta:

1. Start the Startup Disk Creator
2) Plug in the USB flash drive
-nautilus complains that it cannot mount the drive. Well d'oh! Of course
