Workaround found with help from Chris Halse Rogers:
This was failing back to VESA, because I had disabled KMS.
I had done that in an effort to fix a blank screen on boot.
The original symptom was a blank screen, although the machine would boot
and was accessible via ssh.
First, I enabled KMS

The two patches for this don't apply cleanly to Lucid and will require
additional work and/or patches from uptream, so I won't have a test
kernel today. I'll try to get one soon, but I'll be busy at UDS next
week.

So it looks like the problem appeared in the .18-.19 release, and there
aren't many patches in there that touched the i915 driver. I'll
investigate and perhaps build a test kernel that backs out the
patch(es).
There was a patch that went in to disable FBC for 915GM and 945GM
devices, to prevent
This patch made the Ubuntu kernel before beta 2 freezeand is working its
way through the build systems, let's wait and test that.
