I can confirm what you are saying is true and tested as well on my

I added 10 networks to my /etc/network/interfaces file and they started
up ok after doing a /etc/init.d/networking restart
Sorry, I cannot confirm this as a problem in Ubuntu. It most likely is a
vmware network device issue.
