[Bug 1363519] Re: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check
As of today, debsums -c reports me debsums -c /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gbm/old.gbm_gallium_drm.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/old.libgbm.so.1.0.0 Please, please, clean up all the wrong entries. There should be a test which any package must pass before it can be rolled out. The test should also include updates and corresponding scripts/triggers. It always drives me crazy when debsums -c is reporting something. Especially, I'm not sure if I can rely on virustotal to check detected files against malware (the virus scanners are somehow windows related). In germany, we have a federal trojan created by our government which claims to also infect linux boxes. Not that I'm afraid of being a target. [Bug 1404762] Re: apparmor profile usr.sbin.clamd does not allow ScanOnAccess via fanotify
I was describing two issues: One is that root user was needed for ScanOnAccess. Second was that the apparmor profile does not fit. Basically, there should be an easy way to use ScanOnAccess with correct apparmor profile. Fanotify seems to be a basic feature in conjunction with a virus scanner (which can simply run in user space without a kernel module, still getting notified about changes in files). With the two changes I described, ScanOnAccess is working for me with root privileges and apparmor profile disabled. Therefore, it also detects Eicar testfiles. I'd suggest to make ScanOnAccess more accessible to an average user. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1404762 Title: apparmor profile usr.sbin.clamd does not allow ScanOnAccess via fanotify To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/1404762/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1401454] Re: Thunderbird writes attachments to /tmp readable to everyone
As the discussion about this was going on for 8 years in the mozilla community, I suggest to at least set permissions right in the distros. For the moment, there is only one path (which is /tmp) and there is only the original name used. That said, concurrent users could overwrite their temporary files to each other. Setting permissions right would avoid that in addition to solving the security problem. And it's still better than allowing users to overwrite files of other users to avoid error messages. Plus, privacy is an issue here as users can read private files of other users. On single user systems, there might not be a noticable change to users. So, what should it break? It's still not a perfect concept but a big improvement in terms of security. The rest can be done later in a nice fashion. After setting permissions right in the distros you can still wait another 8 years and see which solution mozilla community came up with. Possible we see an importance change to 'high' in between (say 4 years or so). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1401454 Title: Thunderbird writes attachments to /tmp readable to everyone To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird/+bug/1401454/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1363519] Re: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check
I am very concerned about this issue. I installed from media 119cb63b48c9a18f31f417f09655efbd ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso. I double-checked the hash comes from a SSL-trusted page and checked the md5 sum of the file which was correct. However, I also get md5sum /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic 144bf4beed11fb77e5ad629452741310 /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic md5sum /sbin/start-stop-daemon b1b8894ae2e3b547dca0e288634cce4a /sbin/start-stop-daemon Could you please re-check that this is trusted software? Next, I'm thinking about the question, how the community can technically make sure that we never install untrusted software via apt-get. What if a man-in-the-middle-Attack happens? This can easyly happen, if your router is fishy! Besides that, I think about third-party-repositories, and there's two scenarios I could imagine. - What if I get untrusted keys via a man-in-the-middle-attack - What about software which is downloaded by (third-party-)repo-software? First, this is out of focus for debsums. Second, I'm never sure if the downloaded software is rechecked against trustworth (SSL-transmitted) hashes. Many of us have to use oracle-java for some reason, which is provided by webupd8 repos, for example. Not that I say, I don't trust them. But if EVER they provide/download untrusted software(e.g. occasionally via man-in-the-middle), a lot of servers and desktops would be affected via regular update. For example, oracle-java download (done by the apt-package of webupd8) needs to be checked against a trusted hash. I hope, that is already the case, I did not recheck this. - Think about wine software which is downloaded before you can use it - Think about extensions in Mozilla's Firefox/Thunderbird or in OpenOffice/LibreOffice In general: - There's a bunch of software you need to download from sources which are not covered by apt-get (but possibly updated via apt-get). You don't get around that for some reason (e.g. oracle-java). - If a man-in-the-middle-attack happens, the attacker could install any piece of software he wants via a regular update via third-party-repos and other software like wine. The longer I think about it, the more I am concerned about ubuntu's security concerning software rollout. Still, I think that ubuntu's universe repo is the best way to provide lots of software which can be trusted (if the maintainer can be trusted). I would like to have the same affirmation for all software I ever need to install. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1363519 Title: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/1363519/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1363519] Re: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check
To track it down, I took the 14.04.1 media 119cb63b48c9a18f31f417f09655efbd again and installed it without any updates. Doing that, I got the two 144bf4beed11fb77e5ad629452741310 /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic b1b8894ae2e3b547dca0e288634cce4a /sbin/start-stop-daemon again. So, the problem should be reprocudable by anyone. I would appreciate if someone could double check this. This kind of problem should be avoided in future by making sure that debsums can safely check integrity of installed packages again. We totally rely on such instruments when it comes to security. Same here on a Dell Latitude E5510, which I updated to 14.04 these days. I have compiz enabled. For me, CPU consumption begins right after executing nautilus, while nautilus consumes approximately 25% to 40% of the cpu according to top. [Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu
The sudo mv ~/.cache/thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails_ ln -s ~/.thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails did the trick for me as well. I have noticed that ~/.cache/thumbnails only had permissions for the root user. Plus, it just had a size of just 24kilobytes, which means it did not really contain thumbnails. Which is why nautilus did not display any on 14.04. In the end, I can work three times as long as before on battery and, as a bonus, I even can SEE the thumbnails. By simply fixing a symlink. I just can't understand why this bug, which is fixable THAT easy still is not fixed in the packages. Btw, I did not notice the cpu consumption of nautilus in 12.04.4, which means it seems to be a regression after updating to 14.04. [Bug 1213719] Re: [Samsung NP900X3D-A03IT] Powertop shows 100% Device Usage for audio codecs
I hit this bug on a Dell Latitude E5510, up-to-date BIOS version installed. I'm running up-to-date ubuntu 12.04.4 with last hardware-enablement stack installed (uname -a: Linux i306l 3.11.0-17-generic #31~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 4 21:25:43 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux). For me, the problem occurs, when I watch some video using adobe flash for some time (e.g. 10 minutes). Then, my laptop slows down extremely, even after killing the browser (firefox or chromium). top shows 95% idle, but the system still performs very bad. However, the reason for all the problems seems to be the audio codec problem. after setting everything to good, powertop shows: Auslastung Gerätename 6,6%CPU use 100,0%Audiocodec hwC0D0:IDT (pulseaudio ) Note that I currently don't play any audio, but still get 100% audio codec usage. It takes about 30-40 minutes until the system is getting faster again. Could be a temperature issue. The reason for the temperature problems seems to be the audio codec bug. As my system is very different to the samsung system, I guess it's not a BIOS issue. As the problems exists for 1-2 years now, it's an old one. I don't expect it's solved in Kernel 3.12. Over the years, I was installing every hardware enablement stack for precise and every kernel I installed had similar problems. Please reopen this bug report. I guess many people will not find it because the don't have powertop installed. I mean the heat of this bug would be much higher if people would find this bug report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1213719 Title: [Samsung NP900X3D-A03IT] Powertop shows 100% Device Usage for audio codecs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1213719/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 621834] Re: laptop does not suspend after kernel update
Thanks for this first activity in nearly 2 years. I think s2ram is too important to ignore such bug reports that long and wait until they are obsolete (even on a still supported LTS release). Having to hard reset the laptop after s2ram can be considered as bad as a kernel crash. [Bug 905095] Re: qemu-img can't convert vmdk file: Operation not permitted
Angelo, a workaround for me was to run the freetz image (which in fact is an ubuntu image) with VirtalBox. Then I booted the Machine with a systemrescuecd CD. [Bug 620842] Re: laptop halts while it should go to sleep
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Intel Centrino (Pentium-M), 32bit. ATI X300 graphics. I updated my system from karmic to lucid. Using jaunty, it was very very seldom that suspend to ram did not work. Same behaviour with lucid. System was updated frequently. Since I installed a kernel update from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24 in the last days, I can't suspend to ram or hibernate reproducably. The system halts before it sleeps or is switched off. I have to switch the system off and on again. After rebooting, all network connections are switched off and I have to reenable them using NetworkManager. Using 2.6.32-23, I also can't suspend to ram or hibernate any more. A few days ago, this worked fine in most cases. However sometimes I had the same behaviour as now (about one in 10 times it did not suspend). When I reboot my system using kernel 2.6.32-22, suspend to ram and hibernate work fine. Reproducably. -- laptop halts while it should go to sleep https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620842 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 621834] [NEW] laptop does not suspend/hibernate after kernel update
Public bug reported: I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Intel Centrino (Pentium-M), 32bit. ATI X300 graphics. No fglrx drivers. I have to hard reset the system then.
