[Bug 1363519] Re: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check

2015-05-01 Thread Thomas Mayer
As of today, debsums -c reports me

debsums -c
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gbm/old.gbm_gallium_drm.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/old.libgbm.so.1.0.0

Please, please, clean up all the wrong entries. There should be a test
which any package must pass before it can be rolled out.

The test should also include updates and corresponding scripts/triggers.
It always drives me crazy when debsums -c is reporting something.
Especially, I'm not sure if I can rely on virustotal to check detected
files against malware (the virus scanners are somehow windows related).

In germany, we have a federal trojan created by our government which
claims to also infect linux boxes. Not that I'm afraid of being a
target. I'm rather afraid someone even worse than our government could
reuse that malware (with some improvements, as our government has no
idea about computing...).

[Bug 1404762] Re: apparmor profile usr.sbin.clamd does not allow ScanOnAccess via fanotify

2015-04-07 Thread Thomas Mayer
I was describing two issues: One is that root user was needed for
ScanOnAccess. Second was that the apparmor profile does not fit.

Basically, there should be an easy way to use ScanOnAccess with correct
apparmor profile.

Fanotify seems to be a basic feature in conjunction with a virus scanner
(which can simply run in user space without a kernel module, still
getting notified about changes in files).

With the two changes I described, ScanOnAccess is working for me with
root privileges and apparmor profile disabled. Therefore, it also
detects Eicar testfiles.

I'd suggest to make ScanOnAccess more accessible to an average user.

[Bug 1401454] Re: Thunderbird writes attachments to /tmp readable to everyone

2015-03-30 Thread Thomas Mayer
As the discussion about this was going on for 8 years in the mozilla
community, I suggest to at least set permissions right in the distros.

For the moment, there is only one path (which is /tmp) and there is only
the original name used. That said, concurrent users could overwrite
their temporary files to each other. Setting permissions right would
avoid that in addition to solving the security problem. And it's still
better than allowing users to overwrite files of other users to avoid
error messages. Plus, privacy is an issue here as users can read private
files of other users.

On single user systems, there might not be a noticable change to users.
So, what should it break? It's still not a perfect concept but a big
improvement in terms of security. The rest can be done later in a nice
fashion.

After setting permissions right in the distros you can still wait
another 8 years and see which solution mozilla community came up with.
Possible we see an importance change to 'high' in between (say 4 years
or so).

[Bug 1404762] [NEW] apparmor profile usr.sbin.clamd does not allow ScanOnAccess via fanotify

2014-12-21 Thread Thomas Mayer
Public bug reported:

I tried to enable the ScanOnAccess option in /etc/clamav.conf to get on-
access scanning.

Doing so, /var/log/clamav/clamav.log tells me:
ERROR: ScanOnAccess: fanotify_init failed: Operation not permitted
ScanOnAccess: clamd must be started by root

Setting User to root in /etc/clamav/clamd.conf
makes the clamav-daemon to fail with

service clamav-daemon start
 * Starting ClamAV daemon clamd
ERROR: initgroups() failed.

I had to disable the apparmor.profile with a
cd /etc/apparmor.d/disable
ln -s ./../usr.sbin.clamd

Then, the ERROR: initgroups() failed. disappears.

The apparmor itself came via apt-get packages. I did not edit it.

[Bug 1363519] Re: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check

2014-12-03 Thread Thomas Mayer
I am very concerned about this issue. I installed from media
119cb63b48c9a18f31f417f09655efbd ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso. I
double-checked the hash comes from a SSL-trusted page and checked the
md5 sum of the file which was correct.

However, I also get
 md5sum /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic
144bf4beed11fb77e5ad629452741310 /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic
md5sum /sbin/start-stop-daemon
b1b8894ae2e3b547dca0e288634cce4a /sbin/start-stop-daemon

Could you please re-check that this is trusted software?

Next, I'm thinking about the question, how the community can technically
make sure that we never install untrusted software via apt-get. What if
a man-in-the-middle-Attack happens? This can easyly happen, if your
router is fishy!

Besides that, I think about third-party-repositories, and there's two scenarios
I could imagine.
- What if I get untrusted keys via a man-in-the-middle-attack
- What about software which is downloaded by (third-party-)repo-software?
First, this is out of focus for debsums. Second, I'm never sure if the
downloaded software is rechecked against trustworth (SSL-transmitted) hashes.
Many of us have to use oracle-java for some reason, which is provided by
webupd8 repos, for example. Not that I say, I don't trust them. But if EVER
they provide/download untrusted software(e.g. occasionally via
man-in-the-middle), a lot of servers and desktops would be affected via regular
update. For example, oracle-java download (done by the apt-package of webupd8)
needs to be checked against a trusted hash. I hope, that is already the case, I
did not recheck this.
- Think about wine software which is downloaded before you can use it
- Think about extensions in Mozilla's Firefox/Thunderbird or in
OpenOffice/LibreOffice

In general:
- There's a bunch of software you need to download from sources which are not
covered by apt-get (but possibly updated via apt-get). You don't get around
that for some reason (e.g. oracle-java).
- If a man-in-the-middle-attack happens, the attacker could install any piece
of software he wants via a regular update via third-party-repos and other
software like wine.

The longer I think about it, the more I am concerned about ubuntu's
security concerning software rollout. Still, I think that ubuntu's
universe repo is the best way to provide lots of software which can be
trusted (if the maintainer can be trusted). I would like to have the
same affirmation for all software I ever need to install.

[Bug 1363519] Re: start-stop-daemon fails debsums check

2014-12-03 Thread Thomas Mayer
To track it down, I took the 14.04.1 media
119cb63b48c9a18f31f417f09655efbd again and installed it without any
updates.

Doing that, I got the two
144bf4beed11fb77e5ad629452741310 /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic
b1b8894ae2e3b547dca0e288634cce4a /sbin/start-stop-daemon

again. So, the problem should be reprocudable by anyone. I would
appreciate if someone could double check this.

This kind of problem should be avoided in future by making sure that
debsums can safely check integrity of installed packages again. We
totally rely on such instruments when it comes to security. Especially
when core components are affected.

Best regards
Thomas

As long as nautilus can't write thumbnails (disk full) it seems to
consume cpu according to

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-13 Thread Thomas Mayer
I guess a symlink in the home directories needs to be fixed by the
distros, not by gnome upstream. Changes in the package would not
necessarily fix the symlink in the home directories.

Plus, the nautilus software can't delete the wrong ~/.cache/thumbnails
directory, because this directory only has root permissions, which
nautilus eventually does not have. Maybe there's a way to work around
that, I don't know...

[Bug 1341562] Re: indicator-printers not working on Ubuntu 14.04

2014-08-13 Thread Thomas Mayer
I updated from 12.04.4 to 14.04 some days ago, but since that, the
printers-indicator is missing (I use gnome classic). Any other indicator
is displayed. The package indicator-printers is installed according to
synaptic.

As of today, my system is up-to-date, including the kernel. I do not use
the proposed-repository.

This bug has seen a fix in 1304434, but many people still have the same
problem. That's why 1341562 needed to be opened, because another fix
seems to be necessary according to the reports in 1304434, which has
been closed and will not get any further attention by the development
team.

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Mayer
Same here on a Dell Latitude E5510, which I updated to 14.04 these days.
I have compiz enabled.

For me, CPU consumption begins right after executing nautilus, while
nautilus consumes approximately 25% to 40% of the cpu according to top.
It seems as if as if all 4 threads of my dualcore cpu are in use by
nautilus. Once consuming cpu, it does not stop anymore until I close
nautilus.

Definately, it is unusable that way on a laptop on battery. Capacity
drops from 5-6 hours to 1-2 hours just because of nautilus. Please fix
this annoying bug which seemed to be active for years now.

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Mayer
The
sudo mv ~/.cache/thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails_
ln -s ~/.thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails
did the trick for me as well.

I have noticed that ~/.cache/thumbnails only had permissions for the
root user. Plus, it just had a size of just 24kilobytes, which means it
did not really contain thumbnails. Which is why nautilus did not display
any on 14.04.

In the end, I can work three times as long as before on battery and, as
a bonus, I even can SEE the thumbnails. By simply fixing a symlink. I
just can't understand why this bug, which is fixable THAT easy still is
not fixed in the packages.

Btw, I did not notice the cpu consumption of nautilus in 12.04.4, which
means it seems to be a regression after updating to 14.04.

And I updated just some days ago, so I guess the transition during the
update to 14.04 still is buggy.

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Mayer
The old directory entry was

ls -la .cache/|grep thumbnails
drwx-- 1 root root 18 Jul 15 01:40 thumbnails

which came from 12.04 or before, I guess. I can't remember to have ever
touched this directory manually.

I guess this is the world's most energy consuming missing symlink ever.
I expect the number of affected users to be MUCH higher than 129,
because this bug was not reported automatically because of an
application crash.

Think of environmental pollution, think of energy costs (approx. 30USD
per year just for me. Multiply with all users coming from older ubuntu
versions), think of battery consumption, noise, heat, cooling, and
slowness of affected systems.

This bug MUST have a HIGH PRIORITY and can be fixed so easy.

[Bug 1213719] Re: [Samsung NP900X3D-A03IT] Powertop shows 100% Device Usage for audio codecs

2014-02-20 Thread Thomas Mayer
I hit this bug on a Dell Latitude E5510, up-to-date BIOS version
installed.

I'm running up-to-date ubuntu 12.04.4 with last hardware-enablement stack
installed (uname -a:
Linux i306l 3.11.0-17-generic #31~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 4 21:25:43 UTC
2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux).

For me, the problem occurs, when I watch some video using adobe flash
for some time (e.g. 10 minutes). Then, my laptop slows down extremely,
even after killing the browser (firefox or chromium). top shows 95%
idle, but the system still performs very bad.

However, the reason for all the problems seems to be the audio codec
problem.

after setting everything to good, powertop shows:
Auslastung Gerätename
  6,6%CPU use
100,0%Audiocodec hwC0D0:IDT (pulseaudio )

Note that I currently don't play any audio, but still get 100% audio
codec usage.

It takes about 30-40 minutes until the system is getting faster again.
Could be a temperature issue. The reason for the temperature problems
seems to be the audio codec bug.

As my system is very different to the samsung system, I guess it's not a
BIOS issue.

As the problems exists for 1-2 years now, it's an old one. I don't
expect it's solved in Kernel 3.12.

Over the years, I was installing every hardware enablement stack for
precise and every kernel I installed had similar problems.

Please reopen this bug report. I guess many people will not find it
because the don't have powertop installed. I mean the heat of this bug
would be much higher if people would find this bug report.

[Bug 621834] Re: laptop does not suspend after kernel update

2012-06-10 Thread Thomas Mayer
Thanks for this first activity in nearly 2 years.

I think s2ram is too important to ignore such bug reports that long and
wait until they are obsolete (even on a still supported LTS release).
Having to hard reset the laptop after s2ram can be considered as bad as
a kernel crash.

I will see if I still can reproduce the bug on my old laptop (which has
been replaced by a new one in between).

[Bug 905095] Re: qemu-img can't convert vmdk file: Operation not permitted

2012-03-19 Thread Thomas Mayer
Angelo, a workaround for me was to run the freetz image (which in fact
is an ubuntu image) with VirtalBox. Then I booted the Machine with a
systemrescuecd CD.

In systemrescuecd I extracted the disk image using the dd command (disk
druid). You can netcat the raw image via network to your KVM machine.
The raw image booted without any problems in KVM.

Hope this works for you.

[Bug 905095] [NEW] qemu-img can't convert vmdk file: Operation not permitted

2011-12-15 Thread Thomas Mayer
Public bug reported:

There is no reason why the vdmk image can't be converted. Even running
it as root does not help.

$ ls -lh
insgesamt 60G
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 479M 2011-09-10 17:47 freetz-linux-1.2.1-disk1.vmdk

$ sudo qemu-img convert freetz-linux-1.2.1-disk1.vmdk -O raw
/tmp/freetz-linux-1.2.1-disk1.raw
qemu-img: Could not open 'freetz-linux-1.2.1-disk1.vmdk': Operation not
permitted
qemu-img: Could not open 'freetz-linux-1.2.1-disk1.vmdk'

I get a similar Error when I try to rum vmdk images directly. After adding a
new machine and adding vmdk disks with virt-manager, it tells me when I start
the virtual machine:
Error starting domain: internal error process exited while connecting to
monitor: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1
kvm: -drive
file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/freetz-linux-1.2.1-disk1.vmdk,if=none,id=drive-virtio-disk0,boot=on,format=qcow2:
 could not open disk image
/var/lib/libvirt/images/freetz-linux-1.2.1-disk1.vmdk: Invalid argument

Runnung raw images works perfectly for me.

Hint: i have a symlink set:
/var/lib/libvirt$ ls -lh
insgesamt 12K
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K 2011-07-26 14:30 boot
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root9 2011-08-19 10:47 images - /home/vms
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K 2011-08-19 09:38 network
drwxr-xr-x 5 libvirt-qemu kvm 4,0K 2011-12-16 04:34 qemu

but this should not be the reason hopefully

[Bug 620842] Re: laptop halts while it should go to sleep

2010-08-21 Thread Thomas Mayer
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Intel Centrino (Pentium-M), 32bit. ATI
X300 graphics.

I updated my system from karmic to lucid. Using jaunty, it was very very
seldom that suspend to ram did not work. Same behaviour with lucid.
System was updated frequently.

Since I installed a kernel update from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24 in the
last days, I can't suspend to ram or hibernate reproducably. The system
halts before it sleeps or is switched off. I have to switch the system
off and on again. After rebooting, all network connections are switched
off and I have to reenable them using NetworkManager.

Using 2.6.32-23, I also can't suspend to ram or hibernate any more. A
few days ago, this worked fine in most cases. However sometimes I had
the same behaviour as now (about one in 10 times it did not suspend).

When I reboot my system using kernel 2.6.32-22, suspend to ram and
hibernate work fine. Reproducably.

[Bug 621834] [NEW] laptop does not suspend/hibernate after kernel update

2010-08-21 Thread Thomas Mayer
Public bug reported:

last days, I can't suspend to ram or hibernate reproducably. The system
halts before it sleeps or is switched off. I have to hard reset the
system then. After rebooting, all network connections are switched off
and I have to reenable them using NetworkManager.

Using 2.6.32-23, I also can't suspend to ram or hibernate any more. A

[Bug 579584] Re: setgid, setuid needed by /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/libvirt-qemu

2010-05-19 Thread Thomas Mayer
Hello,

I just updated from jaunty to karmic and then to lucid.
After that, I had the same problem and I could not boot my images any more.
Maybe apparmor was installed automatically and caused the problem when starting
a guest:

error: Failed to start domain 220_trxerdpd330_installtest
error: internal error unable to start guest: libvir: QEMU error : cannot change
to '114' group: Operation not permitted

after adding the following lines in /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt-qemu the problem
was solved:
capability setgid,
capability setuid,

The xml of my guest looks like this

domain type='kvm'

  target port='0'/
/console
input type='mouse' bus='ps2'/
graphics type='vnc' port='6220' autoport='no' keymap='de'/

When I mount a readonly cd image, I get similar errors:

I think there are two issues:
1. libvirt should not chown/chgrp/chmod images, especially not readonly images
2. apparmor profile should correspond to libvirt.

When I mount a readonly cd image, I get similar errors:

I think there are two issues:
1. libvirt should not chown/chgrp/chmod images, especially not readonly images
2. apparmor profile should correspond to libvirt.

[Bug 482673] [NEW] gscan2pdf G4-Compression: chunked ccitt g4 tif not supported

2009-11-14 Thread Thomas Mayer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gscan2pdf

What I did:
- Scan a page with a scanner
- Click on Save
- Choose G4 Compression
- and Save in new File

Then comes an error message:
Fehler beim Einbinden der Bilddatei im tif-Format ins PDF: chunked ccitt g4 tif
not supported. at /usr/share/perl5/PDF/API2/Resource/XObject/Image/TIFF.pm line
270.

The pdf cannot be stored in G4.

In case I choose standard compression the pdf can be stored.

I have a fresh ubuntu karmic installed with all updates and all
dependencies of gscan2pdf.

In ubuntu jaunty, I was able to store with G4-Compression in gscan2pdf.

[Bug 228103] Re: multiple pages per sheet in useless order when landscape

2009-02-05 Thread Thomas Mayer
I have the same error: when printing 2x2 in landscape from evince, i get
the following order:

2 1
3 2

I can set another page order in the page/driver settings, but this does
not produce a wanted order, which is

1 2
3 4

With 6 pages per sheet there were similar problems.

Instead, I did the following:
pdftops -q -level3 x.pdf
psnup -l -pA4 -4 x.ps| lpr

This is very slow, but it is working and produces the page order I want.
First, I tried pdfnup, but this produced some errors.

This is only a workaround, i would encourage to fix the problem in cups.
Maybe you have to automatically set an option like -l in psnup?

[Bug 291062] Re: MASTER - Network Manager sometimes has enable networking unchecked/disabled when resuming from suspend

2008-11-16 Thread Thomas Mayer
After update from hardy to intrepid, I had the same problems:
- sometimes after resuming, network interface is disabled and can be enabled
via network manager
- sometimes after resuming, network interface is disabled and can NOT be
enabled via network manager. I have to restart then to enable it again.

The problems occur about every three resumes. With hardy, I did not have these
problems at all.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 which uses b44 driver module for networking
