Just installed and booted with mainline kernel. I got an error during installing[1], but it still started. The graphics were crappy (low resolution on Nvidia GTX 560 TI, minimal VGA driver or something, like i have it during normal booting until the login screen pops up.) Otherwise it worked fine.

I have the same issue. Under Ubuntu 10.10 i fixed that by enforcing Ubuntu to mount USB devices as sync and not as async. But as time went by, i don't know anymore how i did that or if it is still possible. At the moment the speed is very slow (5-7 MB/s), while i could write files easily faster
