Actually on Edgy, I can't reproduce this. I created a new user, logged
in, opened gnome-system-log. I didn't belong to the 'adm' group but I
got no error messages. However, only /var/log/cups/cups_error and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log were visible.

I'm going to reject this since thought was put into the matter and it
was decided that initng is not suitable. If you feel that initng should
be used instead of upstart, you should raise this on the ubuntu-sounder
mailing list...

Hi. Are you sure the CD you tried to install from is OK and that the
drive's lens is clean? You can test this by choosing the Check CD for
defects option that appears when the CD boots (on the screen where you
choose Start/Install Ubuntu ).

Are you sure the CD is ok ? On the same menu, select Check CD for
defects and wait until the test completes. If it is not successful,
check the MD5 sum of your downloaded image (
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VerifyIsoHowto) and if it is OK,
reburn it at a low speed. If it turns out not be OK,
