I have an HP nx6310 and was also experiencing exactly the same problem.
I can also confirm that adding 'modprobe -r psmouse' to /etc/init.d/halt
and /etc/init.d/reboot solved the problem.
The instructions were a little unclear as to where in the shutdown scripts to
add 'modprobe -r psmouse'. I
Deleting the training.dat file resolved the problem, and it has not
recurred since. It is no longer an issue for me.

Hi Brian,
sorry, I was afk for a couple of days.
The ubuntu version is 6.10 with xubuntu (but same problem with gnome)
desktop. The other versions are
libnm-util0 0.6.3-2ubuntu6
linux-image-2.6.17-10-386 2.6.17.1-10.34
I'll have to (remember to) check this when I'm at home with my Dapper
system. Apologies for leaving it unchecked.
