I am also a kubuntu user and on jaunty I can confirm that the workaround for me was : sudo apt-get install python-gnome2 This then installed the following programmes as well : python-gconf python-gnomecanvas python-pyorbit I can confirm that USB then started as it kicked in gksu and up came USB
