I get this problem too.
Running Gutsy, with an ATI X1900. It worked ok in the 64-bit version
strangely, but not the 32-bit version. I did however have the very
latest 8.42 ATI drivers installed with the
Soory for not responding earlier.
Mine sort of works too.
On my Philips 20 200W6 TFT (1680x1050) usplash now displays, albeit at
a lower resolution of 1024x768. That's ok for now though, but it would
be nice to close the bug fully.
I have an install script, part of which changes the resolution
Public bug reported:
After installing Gutsy Tribe 3, my usplash.conf incorrectly shows my
resolution as :
# Usplash configuration file
xres=1680
yres=1680
This occurs in Feisty 7.04 and Edgy 6.10.
Everything loads up ok, I just can't see anything. No splash graphic, or
even an output say for

Wow, thanks for responding so quickly.
I've tried the Windows app you mentioned, I'll post the output. I've
also run sudo xresprobe vesa and got the output from that.
I can confirm it's definitely still happening in Gutsy (Tribe 3), so
doesn't appear to be fixed in the latest xserver.

Is this a bug in xserver then?
I've tried it with PC Linux OS and everything works straight out of the
box.
Is it something in the Ubuntu build (an older version of something
etc...)?

Hmmm not sure I agree with that explanation. It's clear that people want
to be able to set the length a notification shows for. It's a feature
that is even listed in the documentation.
People are asking to be able to use it, and you're either not letting
them, or are suggesting having a
Still getting this issue in Karmic on one of my rigs, AMD Athlon64 3200+
with an NVidia 7300GT. I'm running the 185 NVidia drivers and Firefox
3.5.
I've also tried 190b drivers with Firefox 3.6, but no luck.
This is becoming tiresome. Something as basic as browsing should just
work, especially
When I click the cross or select close, it closes Banshee, which is
also reflected in Unity (ie no pointer to indicate it's open).
I then go to the sound-indicator. It shows Banshee and the song still
playing. I click on Banshee in the indicator, yet Banshee doesn't pop
up. Instead it now shows
well, that's if you consider that less notifications is an issue, I
would rather consider it as a feature (but that's my personal opinion)
we get enough notification spam without encouraging every software
writter to add some ;-)
I agree that spamming is a bad thing. I just think Ubuntu's
bealer, opensource based doesn't mean you can't take design decisions
or choices, we could try to fix every applications and blame random
softwares installed from the internet for making ubuntu bug or we can

This is still happening in 11.04 on my Dell Studio 15. Looks like I'll
be reverting back to 10.04. Am amazed such a critical bug hasn't been
fixed, and may not be fixed until 11.10.

Definitely a bug or inconsistency in my opinion.
As mentioned something like Pidgin, if I select close or click the x
it just minimizes. Rhythmbox seems to be the only app that goes against
this. Hence I see it as a bug as it's not consistent with other apps.

Window close should close, not
I got this working in Natty (and it should work in earlier releases)
simply by adding the Karmic repository to my apt sources (ie, sudo gedit
/etc/apt/sources.list). I then simply force and lock the mediatomb,
mediatomb-common and mediatomb-daemon packages. Annoyingly update
manager will still try
This still occurs in 11.04

The initial problem is that the API documentation (which I can't find on
Google now) and Wiki didn't/don't quite match.
It so happened that Adrian and I came across the API documentation,
rather than the Wiki. And in most cases I would guess that people using
it will just look at the API
+1 (for the above comment)
It's also hugely misleading. I followed documentation, and spent a fair
amount of time trying to get it to work before coming across this
thread.
Can you either:
a) Fix the documentation and remove that we can change the timeout
b) Make the notification timeout
So the argument about users and their experience, or how you think it
should be used goes out the window if developers can and are starting to
get around it. In which case you may as well just open it up properly
for use. It's confusingly documented that way, and people have requested
the change

That's not true, Canonical does organize user testing sessions and
watch non technical users dealing with Ubuntu.
Ok cool. I meant more specifically around notify-osd and just
notifications but I know there will be a degree of user testing already
going on. I also meant on the wider scale. User

Can't believe they'd ignore the community so much. Very poor process not
to ignore what users are clearly requesting, as a) it'll anger them, and
b) they'll go elsewhere eventually when someone offers what they want.
In all honesty, I actually use Linux Mint now (have done for a while).

Think this discussion has gone on too long and is going nowhere. It
needs to be reviewed.
1) Clearly developers have a need to be able to override the default
time of the notification. That needs to be considered, especially if you
want to encourage development on the platform.
2) If you're not
Removing pm-utils seems to solve the issue for me, but means I have very
