I can confirm that this bug is still present in ubuntu hardy heron.
I have been able to suppress it by changing filesystem.py as describe in the
link above.

Same problem Linux 2.6.31-14-generic / Ubuntu Karmic
This suggestion does not change anythig on this issue for me
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M fixed (I have alos tried lower rates)
The only way to restore the network is to reset the wifi with the following
command
sudo modprobe -r

1 - The wireless is not enabled after login in the unity interface
2 - The Fn+F5 switch stop to work.
It remain possible to enable the wireless network with NetworkManager. I

I have installed the kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.3-rc7-precise/ according instruction from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds as per your request.
I have downloaded:
linux-headers-3.3.0-030300rc7_3.3.0-030300rc7.201203101735_all.deb
I use wireles and adding modprobe -r iwl3945 at the end of the
/etc/default/halt file solve the probleme.

I have used a live USB (my CD burner stop to work since few month)
Intall paprefs..., Unload module-suspend-on-idle, Set the simultaneous output
