I just upgraded to v11.04 from v10.10, and at boot, I only get a blank screen.
It looks like an NVidia bug :
- I did not see any error in syslog, nor in Xorg.0.log, nor in kdm.log or in
gdm.log
- reverting to the nv driver at least gives me a (ugly) display -
I noticed, with the nvidia driver, that the X process (/usr/bin/X :0
etc) was NOT killable, even with kill -9 ! this was amazing ! I have
been in the Unix/Linux world for 20 years now, and I only remember of
non-killable processes in situations related to hardware failures.

well, actually the previous backtrace happened when I had troubles with
my cx88_blackbird driver - I did not have any TV data at all, thus I
removed it with `modprobe -r cx88_blackbird', then I started it again;
it happened twice; the following one happened when I wanted to kill
xawtv with Ctrl-Q
I did not shut down my desktops yesterday - Xorg keeps working, with kdm
in the background - my doomed command does not seem to be doomed any
more - these were today's news ...

Once again, the kernel fails to properly drive my TV card HVR-1300; I
just upgraded to kernel 3.5.0-30-generic; when I wanted to watch tv
using
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:input=1:device=/dev/video0:norm=PAL-DK
the command just stalled, the process cannot be killed (kill
ah, not good ! now even kernel v3.4.0-5-generic trigger the issue : so
it's related to today's reboot : I have downloaded the lastest updates.
However, I cannot watch TV any more ! great !

it was not my tv card, but my WEBCAM : I was trying to run mplayer on
the webcam by mistake, but previously it would output a bunch of errors,
not just freeze the OS !

So far I am assuming that the problem is a driver one.
I have an old HP Deskjet 710C parallel printer. I really don't print a
lot, so it ages well. I just replaced my former desktop with a new
barebone without parallel port - no space to embed a PCI IEEE 1284

Before posting to the usb list, do you confirm my first guess that this
may be a kernel bug ? I saw that cups does not support usblp anymore.
Can we be sure that this is not a cups issue ? I just mentioned the
kernel because it seemed one possible thing to do. But
I am sorry I have been unclear : with the old Unix, I was able to run
low level tests such as :
cat test_file /dev/lp0
with such a test I would have been able to test the kernel driver only;
so would have I been able to do with usblp, which generates such special
devices : I could have
I ran a last quick search : I began diving in libusb programming : and
this is what i was afraid of : they don't use the usual Unix special
files : they address the usb devices on the bus directly, as I found on
this example :

Actually, this computer (Shuttle) is my firewall. My main computer is
still running Ubuntu 12.10 (I have a boot issue because of my TV card -
