Hi fheimes,
Yes i agree, these all bugs are same!
I have validated on my system by updating the system with "apt upgrade" and the
qemu version is updating with having the fix included in it.

qemu-system-ppc64 -version
QEMU emulator version 8.2.2 (Debian 1:8.2.2+ds-0ubuntu1.3~ppa1)
Copyright (c) 2003-2023 Fabrice Bellard and the QEMU Project developers

Attaching the guest xml for future references!

Thanks

Are you thinking of backports for the LTS releases 22.04 and 20.04 ?

The conflicts were due to the backported PCI support and cap numbers.
I.e. there were only git conflicts and I didn't change code.

I'll test the kernel next week.

[Bug 2078347] [NEW] [UBUNTU 24.04] Udev/rules: Missing rules causes newly added CPUs to stay offline

Adding a configured CPU to a system (LPAR, ZVM or KVM) leaves that CPU
configured but hotplugged off.

GNU/Linux

---Steps to Reproduce---
Easiest way to reproduce is using a KVM guest to add new CPUs.

1. Before adding CPUs:

$ virsh dumpxml vm

   ...
  8

2. Attempt to add CPUs to the guest in a "running" state.
$ virsh setvcpus vm 8 --live

3. The guest XML is updated :
   ...
  8

4. But inside the guest, the CPUs are in offline state:
$ lscpu -e
CPU NODE DRAWER BOOK SOCKET CORE L1d:L1i:L2 ONLINE CONFIGURED POLARIZATION
ADDRESS
  00 00 00 0:0:0 yes yeshorizontal 0
  10 00 11 1:1:1 yes yeshorizontal 1
  20 00 22 2:2:2 yes yeshorizontal 2
  30 00 33 3:3:3 yes yeshorizontal 3
  40 00 44 4:4:4 yes yeshorizontal 4
  50 00 55 5:5:5 yes yeshorizontal 5
  6- -- -- - no yeshorizontal 6
  7- -- -- - no yeshorizontal 7

5. Post rebooting the guest, the CPUs are online:
$ virsh reboot vm

Inside the guest:
$ lscpu -e
CPU NODE DRAWER BOOK SOCKET CORE L1d:L1i:L2 ONLINE CONFIGURED POLARIZATION
ADDRESS
  00 00 00 0:0:0 yes yeshorizontal 0
  10 00 11 1:1:1 yes yeshorizontal 1
  20 00 22 2:2:2 yes yeshorizontal 2
  30 00 33 3:3:3 yes yeshorizontal 3
  40 00 44 4:4:4 yes yeshorizontal 4
  50 00 55 5:5:5 yes yeshorizontal 5
  60 00 66 6:6:6 yes yeshorizontal 6
  70 00 77 7:7:7 yes yeshorizontal 7

The CPUs should be online after adding them to the system.

Other distros already have a udev rule to circumvent this under;
/etc/udev/rules.d/

The rule does a check if a newly added CPUs are configured but not online, then
hotplugs it to make it online. If CPUs are NOT configured then they should stay
offline.

[Bug 2077722] [NEW] [Ubuntu 24.04] MultiVM - L2 guest(s) running stress-ng getting stuck at booting after triggering crash

2024-08-23 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Problem:
While bringing up 2 Ubuntu 24.04 guests and running stress-ng (90% load) on
both and triggering crash simultaneously, 1st guest gets stuck and does not
boot up. In one of the attempts, both the guests got stuck on booting with
console hang.

Attempts:
Reproducible 3/3 consecutive times
Run 1: L2-1 guest got stuck
Run 2: L2-1 guest got stuck
Run 3: L2-1 and L2-2 guest got stuck

=
L1 Host:
1. PowerVM
2. OS: Ubuntu 24.04
3. Kernel: 6.8.0-31-generic
4. Mem (free -mh): 47Gi
5. cpus: 40

Guest L2-1:
1. OS: Ubuntu 24.04
2. Kernel: 6.8.0-31-generic
3. Mem (free -mh): 9.5Gi
4. cpus: 8
5. Stress: stress-ng - 90% load
6. XML configuration:
   16
   10971520

Guest L2-2:
1. OS: Ubuntu 24.04
2. Kernel: 6.8.0-31-generic
3. Mem (free -mh): 9.5Gi
4. cpus: 8
5. Stress: stress-ng - 90% load
6. XML configuration:
   16
   10971520

=
Steps to reproduce:
1. Bring up 2 Ubuntu 24.04 L2 guests with configuration mentioned as above
2. Run the attached stress-ng.sh script on both L2 guests
3. Trigger crash: echo c >/proc/sysrq-trigger on both L2 guests at the same time

After triggering the crash, 1 or both guest consoles will get stuck. And
then, we will not be able to enter the guest neither shut it down. In
oder to boot into the guest, virsh destroy of the guest will be
required.

--- Comment From fran...@de.ibm.com 2024-08-22 09:50 EDT---
The provided package works without a problem and I've verified that the guest
keeps on running when dumping to a file system that's smaller than the dump
size.

I've used the patches that I've attached to the kernel bug to add the
feature to KVM and built s390-tools from the latest git since there's no
backport yet for 22.04.

Hey Sergio, I was unavailable the last two days, but I'll test your package
today.
Sorry that I missed those commits and caused more work.

On a side note: My first name is Janosch and it makes sense to use it
when mentioning me, since fheimes is also around.

--- Comment From vajai...@in.ibm.com 2024-08-20 07:05 EDT---
Hi Canonical,
Thanks for responding.

The patch 7be6ce7043b4("KVM: PPC: Book3S HV nestedv2: Cancel pending DEC
exception") does have a fixes tag pointing to the patch 180c6b072bf3
("KVM: PPC: Book3S HV nestedv2: Do not cancel pending decrementer
exception") that was picked up in Ubuntu 24.04.

Since the latest LTS/stable tree before 6.9 is based on 6.6 where the
offending patch 180c6b072bf3 ("KVM: PPC: Book3S HV nestedv2: Do not
cancel pending decrementer exception") was not yet merged hence I hadnt
marked the patch 7be6ce7043b4 to stable.

If this patch still needs manual submission can you please let me know
how to do that.

Thanks
~ Vaibhav

Commit ad3b2e693d applies cleanly for me on the following base commit + quilt
patches
8a4bd971eb (tag: import/1%6.2+dfsg-2ubuntu6.22)

Does the git cherry-pick fail and if yes, where?
That's one of the easiest patches to have a conflict, so I'm surprised.

It looks like a couple of commits were provided to mitigate the issue
last year? I only see one track in the LP bug that indicates a fix was
released. Thanks.

I have a lot of problems when trying to compile a jammy qemu and I haven't yet
been able to fix them.
Fortunately I was at least able to apply the following patches on top of the
qemu jammy-devel source git (after a quilt push -a). If possible try to compile
them and send me a ppa or deb file for testing.

These patches include the fix for paused VMs if a dump is being written

--- Comment From harsh.prateek.b...@ibm.com 2024-08-14 07:15 EDT---
All 4 required upstream patches (mentioned below) have been backported for Qemu
v8.2.2 and attached to this BZ.

Pre-req patch:
08c3286822 accel/kvm: Extract common KVM vCPU {creation, parking} code

Fix patches:
c6a3d7bc9e accel/kvm: Introduce kvm_create_and_park_vcpu() helper
18530e7c57 cpu-common.c: export cpu_get_free_index to be reused later
cfb52d07f5 target/ppc: handle vcpu hotplug failure gracefully

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Harsh

1) virsh define bug.xml

2) virsh start Fedora39 --console

3) virsh setvcpus Fedora39 68

Output :
[ 662.102542] KVM: Create Guest vcpu hcall failed, rc=-44
error: Unable to read from monitor: Connection reset by peer

If resources are less, in my thinking it should fail gracefully!
Attaching the XML file that i have used and will post the observations on MDC
system there i saw this same failure on higher number.

[Bug 1959940] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2024-08-08 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From fran...@de.ibm.com 2024-08-08 08:52 EDT---
Three additional commits are necessary to allow cherry picking with minimal
effort:
3c724f1a1caa s390: uv: Add offset comments to UV query struct and fix naming
ac640db3a026 s390/uv: Add SE hdr query information
daec8d408308 Documentation: KVM: add separate directories for
architecture-specific documentation

I'll attach the backport patches once I've verified them and for that
I'll need to backport qemu.

While trying virsh attach-interface and virsh detach-interface, It is observed
that, attaching an interface is successful. But trying to detach the same
results in the guest crash with the below trace messages on the console.

[Bug 2075575] [NEW] kexec fails in LPAR when some cpus are disabled

2024-08-02 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

== Comment: #0 - SEETEENA THOUFEEK  - 2024-08-02 03:11:31
==
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #206083 +++

---Problem Description---
kexec fails in LPAR when some cpus are disabled

Contact Information = sthou...@in.ibm.com

Machine Type = na

---uname output---
na

---Debugger---
A debugger is not configured

---Steps to Reproduce---
 Summary:
At L1 level, kexec fails if some of the cpus in the machine are disabled.

Distros and kernel versions used:
1. Distro versions used

  a. L1 LPAR :

  b. L2 :

Repro steps:
1. Boot into an L1 lpar
2. Disable some cpus (eg: ppc64_cpu --cores-on=3)
3. Try to kexec.

This bug is reproducible only when we load the target kernel/initrd and use
"kexec -e" as follows:

kexec -l --initrd initramfs-$(uname -r).img vmlinuz-$(uname -r)
--append="$(cat /proc/cmdline)"

kexec -e

kexec works fine if we do a normal kexec without skipping the shutdown path

kexec --initrd initramfs-$(uname -r).img vmlinuz-$(uname -r)
--append="$(cat /proc/cmdline)"

Fix is upstream now:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/powerpc/linux.git/commit/?id=21a741eb75f80397e5f7d3739e24d7d75e619011

[Bug 2074380] [NEW] [UBUNTU 22.04] kernel: s390/cpum_cf: make crypto counters upward compatible

2024-07-29 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Description: kernel: s390/cpum_cf: make crypto counters upward
compatible

Symptom: The CPU Measurement facility crypto counter set is not
listed in the device sysfs tree.

Problem: The CPU Measurement facility crypto counter set is not
   exported in the sysfs directory
   /sys/devices/cpum_cf/events.
The attribute files for each CPU-MF counter defined
in the crypto counter set is missing. This is caused
by the counter second version number of the CPU
Measurement Facility hardware being incremented on
new machines. This causes a sanity check to fail,
but the counters are supported by hardware.

Solution: Remove upper limit in counter second version number
   check.

Reproduction: Run command on a new machine generation:
# ls -l /sys/devices/cpum_cf/events/ | grep AES
#
If the output is empty than this patch is required.
   The output should be:
# ls /sys/devices/cpum_cf/events/ | grep AES
AES_BLOCKED_CYCLES
AES_BLOCKED_FUNCTIONS
AES_CYCLES
AES_FUNCTIONS
#

[Bug 2073554] [NEW] Grub2 Support for KVM on PowerVM

2024-07-19 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

AVNISH CHOUHAN 2024-06-24 05:57:01 CDT

We have added required changes in grub2 to support KVM on Power. The
patch is available in upstream grub. This patch adds support for Radix,
Xive and Radix_gtse in Options vector5 which is required for KVM LPARs.
KVM LPARs ONLY support Radix and not the Hash. Not enabling Radix on any
PowerVM KVM LPARs will result in boot failure.

Florian Weimer has listed the single case which results in the segfault here:
Bug 31934 - wcsncmp crash on s390x on vlbb instruction
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=31934#c0

This was extracted from his full-tests here:
[PATCH] manual: Document a GNU extension for strncmp/wcsncmp

The attached file is a standalone version of this wcsncmp test which does not
rely on the glibc-internals. It just calls wcsncmp.

[Bug 2073372] [NEW] [UBUNTU 20.04] s390x: z13 wcsncmp implementation segfaults if n=1

2024-07-17 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

The >=z13 wcsncmp implementation segfaults if n=1 and there is only one
character (equal on both strings) before the page end. Then it loads and
compares one character and misses to check n again. The following load
fails.

This issue was reported here:
Bug 31934 - wcsncmp crash on s390x on vlbb instruction
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=31934

And fixed upstream (first in glibc 2.40):
s390x: Fix segfault in wcsncmp [BZ #31934]
https://sourceware.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=glibc.git;h=9b7651410375ec8848a1944992d663d514db4ba7

This Fix was cherry-picked to the current branches glibc 2.32-39:
- 2.39: commit 5c46e6b66636be0010e9a732d5ba1e65ebd54687
- 2.38: commit 712453634c8efd71a9b3ff0122145a9e90e9955c
- 2.37: commit 340ca2d5148371614c234068f430c19293f962dc
- 2.36: commit a70c55a91b2b361f43e4142aadf86f22af57d406
- 2.35: commit c7cd62653850135bc880688a78104dbf77cf8121
- 2.34: commit 87fa7bfb84895bb517beb8aaf92bd45b829daabb
- 2.33: commit 5f08d1df2c07904c1dc98bdf2b363c65874266f7
- 2.32: commit 5ad449c398a845a9c84808e4ac603beaa1006909

In case somebody needs the fix for older glibc releases (issue was
introduced with glibc 2.23), feel free to just cherry-pick it. Note,
that the file was moved from sysdeps/s390/multiarch/wcsncmp-vx.S to
sysdeps/s390/wcsncmp-vx.S with commit
e9873e1d47c870d707117ada91c9be21e3bf1537 (in glibc 2.29), but the
implementation does not differ.

The build contains the requested support, and I didn't notice any
issues. Looks good to me.

The bug was introduced with kernel 5.14

The available patch (see upstream-ID in comment above) has been added to
stable for 5.15. which should help to get picked up by Jammy and later
releases.

[Bug 2072641] [NEW] [UBUNTU 22.04] KVM: s390: unhandled guest LPSWEY instruction

2024-07-10 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Description: KVM: s390: unhandled guest LPSWEY instruction

Symptom: guest kernel oops on LPSWEY instruction

Problem: in rare cases like machine check injection with
PSW disabled, all load PSW instructions are
intercepted. LPSW and LPSWE are handled by KVM but
   not the new LPSWEY

Solution: Provide an LPSWEY handler in KVM.

Reproduction: hotplug a device while a CPU is disabled for machine
   checks, e.g. during early boot

Upstream-ID: 4c6abb7f7b349f00c0f7ed5045bf67759c012892

Preventive:yes

I gave this a quick test on a z/VM with a RoCE VF.

root@redacted:~# uname -a
Linux redacted 6.8.0-38-generic #38~lp2071471-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 3 07:09:08
UTC 2024 s390x s390x s390x GNU/Linux
root@redacted:~# cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/18d1\:00\:00.0/iommu_group/type
DMA-FQ

So this uses the DMA Flush Queue mechanism as it should. Thanks!
