After updating the system and reinstalling fglrx, the screen still goes to
powersave.

I was able to fix my system using the repair console of the alternate
installer disk.
after opening the console on the linux partition I did
apt-get install fglrx

afterwards I was able to boot.

Same here, I also experience an invisable mousepointer after suspend on
my compaq 615.
If I switch my ATI card to the proprietary FGLRX driver this problem

Online Update to Kubuntu 8.10 (AMD64) did not adjust file
/boot/grub/menu.lst. After the update, only the old kernel entries were
available. Entry still mentions the old Version 8.04:

I assume the reason for this problem is some kind of unfortunate
userspecific settings (kde settings?), since the problem only occurs
under one user account. The problem still ocurs with all current updates
installed.

I experienced the same problem here and found out where this came from:
The culprit was the stupid Samsung SCX-4200 (printer+scanner) installer,
which does a lot of ugly things (renaming the soffice.bin file to
soffice.bin.bin and making the original file a wrapper which then
