I encountered the same issue. First the message 'The resize operation is
impossible' appears. Then, when I select manual partitioning, nothing
happens but the busy mouse cursor.
It does it on 2 different computers.

I wrote a quick and dirty patch so that if the proxy is set up either in
System/Preferences/Proxies or in the $http_proxy environment variable,
it will be taken into account in ubiquity. This is thanks to the
correction of bug #13661 where gksu has been given the ability to set

I stopped using the proprietary module hsfmodem (from Linuxant) and
surprisingly (irony here) the suspend to RAM now works reliably ! Are
you guys using this same module ? (it would make sense because you can

with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo, I suddenly realize that it was
trying to access the file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/i915_dri.so that
I do not have. I created a symlink:
sudo mkdir /usr/X11R6/lib/modules
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/dri /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/
and then the error messages of glxinfo
I went through the changes between the two and it's quite a lot for just
one day. However I found an extremely interesting difference:

I have a T43 1871-W34 and just like David my problems got solved with the
previous fixes.
My acpi-support is a little different however:

I also had issues with a proprietary module. Please, check carefully

The problem lies in invisible characters being inserted. In the command
ps aux | grep lksdjfg, if you remove the 'white spaces' it should work
100% of the time: ps aux|grep lksdjfg. The fix is known but I cannot
remember it.

The results you gave from /proc/acpi/battery and from HAL seem
consistent to me. It clearly indicates that once the battery charged
your laptop stops using the AC and works on battery. Did you notice
anything that can actually confirm this ?
It looks like a hardware bug or a BIOS
