[Bug 492729] Re: built-in trackpoint from my x200 can't be recognized

2010-01-03 Thread linrunner
Hi Andy,

thanks for your support. Your patched kernel doesn't help on my
Thinkpads X200 and T60: xinput -list still says PS/2 Generic Mouse ,
in dmesg no notion auf TPPS/2. Mainline 2.6.32.2 works fine. See
attachments..

I should mention that i'm running Karmic with Lucid Kernel only, but i
doubt this matters.

I think i'm affected too. Panel is constantly crashing and i'm even
unable to click on the crash report icon because it is not shown. unity
--reset did not help.

Unfortunately the referenced bug #929486 is a private bug. Why this?

[Bug 877905] Re: After upgrading Xserver video does not work properly

2011-10-19 Thread linrunner
I can confirm this Bug. Desktop effects don't work anymore.

Hardware:
- ThinkPad T60, ATI X1400 with radeon driver
- ThinkPad X200, Intel 4500MHD

Software: Ubuntu 10.04 with all updates, Kernel 2.6.32-34 amd64

The offending package is xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8. After
downgrading to 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.6 everything is back to normal.

Regards, Thomas

[Bug 585128] Re: invalid character(s) for usernames in GDM

2010-06-20 Thread linrunner
The gdm-package 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2 in PROPOSED suffers from a
regression. The following upstream fix (see changelog) doesn't work
anymore

* New upstream bug fix release:
- When the face browser is disabled, the PAM conversation is started
immediately, so users do not need to click a button to start entering
the username and password. (GNOME #591082)

gdm 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 works fine.

[Bug 514881] Re: powersave-policy-sata-link-power false:Returned exit code 1.

2010-05-17 Thread linrunner
powersave-policy-sata-link-power breaks pm-powersave:
I stumbled upon the same problem when looking why my own powersave script
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/zztlp is not executed.

How to reproduce:
The problem occurs when an sata controller is run in compatible mode.
pm-powersave.log then shows

/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/95hdparm-apm false:
/dev/sda:
setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254)
 APM_level  = 254
success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/anacron false:success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/powersave-policy-dirty-writeback false:success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/powersave-policy-hda-powerdown false:success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/powersave-policy-sata-link-power false:Returned exit
code 1.
 remaining scripts are not executed

When I switch the controller to AHCI-Mode everything is fine:

/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/95hdparm-apm false:
/dev/sda:
setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254)
 APM_level  = 254
success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/anacron false:start: Job is already running: anacron
success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/powersave-policy-dirty-writeback false:success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/powersave-policy-hda-powerdown false:success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/powersave-policy-sata-link-power false:success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/sched-powersave false:**sched policy powersave OFF
success.
/etc/pm/power.d/tlp-userdaemons false:success.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/zztlp false:success.

Hardware tested: ThinkPad T43, T60, X200

I suspect the problem is the same with pata controllers, but i lack the
hardware to test.

[Bug 1140716] Re: [regression] 3.5.0-26-generic and 3.2.0-39-generic GPU hangs on Sandybridge

2013-04-07 Thread linrunner
I'm testing 3.5.0-27.47~lp1140716 a few days now (12.04.2, ThinkPad
X220).

It doesn't completely eliminate the hangups, but it is a *huge* improvement:
- the hangups occur less frequent, around one or two per day
- hangups are not fatal anymore, i.e. system recovers in a short time so that i
even didn't notice them so far – had to look in the syslog for them

[Bug 1119809] UdevLog.txt

2013-02-08 Thread linrunner
apport information

** Attachment added: UdevLog.txt

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1119809/+attachment/3521405/+files/UdevLog.txt

** Description changed:

  Hardware: ThinkPad X220, 42914CG BIOS, 8DET67WW (1.37 ) – Sandy Bridge,
  HD3000 graphics

System: Ubuntu 12.04 (amd64, UEFI), Unity desktop, all updates, only
  kernel 3.2.0-38.59 from proposed

  lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
  Release: 12.04

  uname -a
  Linux trurl 3.2.0-38-generic #59-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 5 17:53:03 UTC 2013
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

*** Primary problem – Login freeze

  Steps to reproduce:
  • Start System
  • Login (with newly created user)

  Symptoms:
  • Empty panel
  • Starter with dash and workspace switcher icons only
  • SIM PIN dialog (X220 has UMTS card)
  • Nothing clickable

  Workaround:
  • restart lightdm from virtual console oder via ssh
  • Login now works
  • Remarks: workaround possible on BAT power only – with AC restart lightdm
hangs but ssh still works

*** Secondary problem (after workaround) - Blackscreen on resume

  Steps to reproduce:
  • Suspend (via system menu)
  • Resume (via Fn-Key)

  Symptoms:
  • Blackscreen
  • no recovery possible via virtual console or ssh

  *** Outputs
Unfortunately ubuntu-bug linux stubbornly insist to say about
linux-image-3.2.0-38-generic: this is not an official ubuntu package, so tell
me what additional data you need.

*** None of the above symptoms occur with kernel 3.2.0-37.58

[Bug 841315] Re: on thinkpad-acpi devices, brightness setting ommits most steps

2012-07-26 Thread linrunner
I'm affected too: ThinkPad X200 and X220 w/ Ubuntu 12.04.

In fact this is a kernel bug and there already is a patch in mainline:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=ff413195e830541afeae469fc866ecd0319abd7e

I can confirm that the patch works for me an some more Thinkpad users
when applied to the current Precise kernel 3.2.0-27.43 and I *strongly*
suggest to integrate this patch in the Precise kernel.

Kernel packages including this patch can be found in my PPA:

2015-05-23 Thread linrunner
@Anupam: there were indeed to many dependencies in the tlp package
(linux_tools *and* linux-tools-common). I removed the latter in package
version 0.7-2~trusty

@All: nevertheless the fact remains: linux-tools-common 3.13 and linux-
lts-vivid-tools-common 3.19 refuse to coexist. This is not the expected
behaviour for HWE kernel packages imho.

[Bug 1574311] Re: Tlp by default breaks wifi status restore on startup.

2016-04-28 Thread linrunner
Hi,

what you describe is the intended default behavior of TLP right from the
beginning in 2010. Changing it would break existing TLP configurations
for many users.

I'll include a note in the official documentation about the
Debian/Ubuntu package disabling the service and how to change the config
to mimic the system default.

[Bug 1603659] Re: Power Management: USB mouse and keyboard laggy and loosing events

2016-07-16 Thread linrunner
Hi,

a plain Ubuntu does not enable USB autosuspend for input devices. Maybe
you implemented something like 'powertop --autotune' in your rc.local?

I suggest you install tlp again (it's in the official repos now), start
it with

sudo tlp start

and attach the output of

tlp-stat -u

ps. upower is neither a replacement for TLP nor does it save battery
power.

Hi,

0.41-1 won't compile with a kernel >= 4.7.

Install tp-smapi-dkms 0.42-1 from Yakkety -->

[Bug 1710978] Re: bluetooth stack looses connection to bluetooth devices when tlp is installed

2017-09-22 Thread linrunner
Did you try the workaround from #2? What was the result?

A kernel driver or bluetooth device that does not properly implement
power saving cannot be fixed in TLP. Your only option is to disable
power saving for the device.

[Bug 1711382] Re: Slow Firefox performance and high CPU load when tlp is installed

2017-09-22 Thread linrunner
@Wolf: you do not even *try* to prove your claim of a bug in TLP. Your
descriptions jump aimlessly from topic to topic (including redundancy
with #1710978).

Before you open a bug report you should have a thorough look into the
TLP FAQ http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-faq.html where you'll find
plenty of workarounds for common problems with kernel power saving and
into TLP Troubleshooting http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-
troubleshooting.html .

For remaining questions I suggest you seek advice in a Linux and/or
Thinkpad oriented forum. The bug tracker is not a support forum!

[Bug 1772382] Re: TLP does not configure tpacpi-bat

2018-05-22 Thread linrunner
TLP's config items not configured by default are so by design: charging
thresholds always go with a lower usable battery capacity. Therefore the
user must make a conscious decision.

This is not a bug.

Please refer to the documentation [1,2].

[Bug 1783455] Re: tlp shouldn't recommend linux-tools

2018-08-03 Thread linrunner
I agree with Raphael about the inapproriate procedure. Ask your
upstream(s) first, please!

> 1) linux-tools is a virtual, provided by many linux-tools packages,
and we have no way of knowing which one matches the kernel you have
installed.

Then what's the proper way to install linux-tools-* matching the
installed kernel? Maybe a bug report against linux-tools would have been
more appropriate than tinkering with the tlp package?

Regards, Thomas (TLP's author)

[Bug 1812099] [NEW] 4.18.0 thinkpad_acpi : thresholds for BAT1 not writable

2019-01-16 Thread linrunner
Public bug reported:

[Problem description]
Kernel 4.17 introduced a new interface to set charge thresholds: The interface
remained unchanged with 4.18. There's a bug preventing writing the charge
thresholds for the secondary battery (BAT1).

[Impact]
ThinkPads with two batteries (ThinkPad "power bridge") e.g.
X240, T440(s), X250, T450(s), X260, T460(s), X270, T470(s) et al.

[Steps to reproduce]
echo 42 > /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/charge_start_threshold
bash: echo: write error: No such device

echo 42 > /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_start_threshold
-- primary battery works!

[Fix]
Problem was fixed in 4.19:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/drivers/platform/x86/thinkpad_acpi.c?h=v4.19.15=d22296d9c38fd29a96bb5079fb8d17cee278f40e

I propose to cherry-pick the patch for 4.18.

[Test Case]
See above, a patched 4.18 works for T450s.

[Regression Potential]
Low. This patch only applies to several ThinkPad machines, and after applying
this patch, charge_start/stop_threshold work for BAT0 and BAT.
