same issue here: nvidia module builds fine, but isn't loaded at startup,
so gdm cannot be started.
i added nvidia to /etc/modules in order to load the nvidia module at
startup ...
it worries me, that this bug is tagged as `invalid', since it `breaks'
the setup for many people, who may not have

btw, i think you are mixing up two issues:
- the latencytop kernel trace is completely unrelated to the issue (it is
related to drm, not to the tracing subsystem)
- the reported bug is not related to 2.6.39-rc1 (it also happens with the
ubuntu-stock kernel)

updating to 1.4.6 (oneiric package) fixes the problem for me

maybe winpdb should then be removed from natty? or the header should be
changed to something like #!/usr/bin/python2.6?

the -rt kernel is still based on 2.6.33. a natty-based system with the
-rt kernel is still prone to this issue
