ja the shutdown thing is sorted, so in terms of the sounds as I said above installing kubuntu on top of gnome seemed to sort that out - how I have no idea. Not exactly a fix and quite a drastic work around. But if this is really irritating you I would suggest trying that. Cheers, Joe ps haven't

Ok I know this sounds weird but I recently installed kubuntu ontop of the gnome distribution. ie in the terminal I typed: sudo apt-get install kubuntu once that had been installed I restarted the laptop and logged into kde. (I made kdm the default display manager) And the sound worked perfectly
