After a fresh install.
I install the nvidia-glx package.
In the terminal I run: sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
Then I edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file: in the Section Device I change

and scratchy sound), however after updating today this bug has returned as bad

I have exactly the same problem on my dell inspiron 1525 running
intrepid - even though I've assigned skype to use 'pulse' for audio
capture my built in microphone doesn't work. However, using sound
recorder I can confirm that the internal mic does actually work! This is

ja the shutdown thing is sorted, so in terms of the sounds as I said above
installing kubuntu on top of gnome seemed to sort that out - how I have no
idea. Not exactly a fix and quite a drastic work around.
But if this is really irritating you I would suggest trying that.

ps haven't
well I still use gnome - what i would do is install kubuntu - then
uninstall it using synaptic after the sound has started working!
otherwise wait around until someone in the know works out a proper
solution

Ok I know this sounds weird but I recently installed kubuntu ontop of the gnome
distribution.
ie in the terminal I typed: sudo apt-get install kubuntu
once that had been installed I restarted the laptop and logged into kde. (I
made kdm the default display manager)
And the sound worked perfectly
