I am experiencing a similar issue 8.04 LTS
Running apt-get fails. Below is partial output, it goes down hill from there.

eGroupware versions are badly lagging. It took many many months for the
1.2 version to be included in Ubuntu. It is taking too long to add the
current stable version (1.4). Most of eGroupware is mostly php so
updating it shouldn't be much of a problem.

was able to work around it by
#mv /var/lib/mysql /var/lib/mysql.orig
#mkdir /var/lib/mysql
#chmod /var/lib/mysql to match mysql.orig
#chown mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql
#mv /var/lib/mysql.orig/mysql /var/lib/mysql/mysql

After a do-release-upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 screen blanking stopped working.
I had my desktop set to blank but no lock the screen.
After the upgrtade it does not ever blank.
preferences are set in Settings-> Power -> Blank Screen 10 minutes

I am running the default 20.04 gnome desktop, except for the display
manager.
I'm not sure how to trigger the issue since the problem is that the
screensaver doesn't start when it's supposed to.

Checked the journal nothing there related to gnome. There are a lot of

When I run an upgrade I get an error that that file is missing. When I do
dpkg --configure -a I get the same message.
In order to solve a problem with the screen not blanking I removed gdm3 and
lightdm then reinstalled gdm3, that's when the error showed
I think I've solved it. I removed gdm3 and lightdm
apt purge gdm3
apt purge lightdm
then reinstalled gdm3 and ubuntu desktop.
apt install gdm3 ubuntu-desktop
It now seems to be working as expected.
It appears to me screen blanking may not work with lightdm, but I'm not sure
perhaps it was
