I have the same terrible bug on my last patched gutsy.
When I unset global proxy through gnome-network-preferences, the http_proxy
ftp_proxy https_proxy variable has the same previous assigned values. Perhaps
the apps says that they are unassigned.
And so I have to force the cleaning of these

I've tried to boot with acpi=off option on my intrepid kernel and I
encountered these problems on boot:
Frequency CPU scaling doesn't work anymore.
Wifi can't be powered-off yet.
Instead they're perfectly working:

It has just crashed. I've runned it through gdm with this parameter:

When I try to log in into Gnome. After the log in screen disappeared,
the only thing I got was a light brown screen for a while then a grey
box in the top left corner of the screen. And then, nothing else, it
just froze there forever. I had to kill it with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.
I've a laptop, and so the keyboard is directly connected. I run now the
last kernel, (2.6.20-12-386) with same problem.

I've encountered this problem also today, with the last Firefox 3.5 build
20090701012740.
When Firefox crash in that way the OS doesn't regognize it as a crash and
doesn't start Report problem... as usual.

1. As I wrote at the beginning, this bug is not reproducible. It happens
when I'm browsing, but also when I'm not: If I keep my laptop on all the
night with my browser opened, usaually when I came back in the morning
Firefox doesn't be running anymore...
