[Bug 1006427] Re: (PowerBookG4) Live image won't boot, stuck on stdin: Not a typewriter
I have the very same issue on the 20121017.5 live image, downloaded from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20121017.5 (MD5 sum was verified after download). My system is a PowerMac G5 Quad. So it doesn't appear to be specific to the PowerBook G4's hardware. After booting the console is slowly filled with the following messages: --- unable to open '/dev/sdb' stdin: not a typewriter stdin: not a typewriter unable to open '/dev/sdb' stdin: not a typewriter stdin: not a typewriter --- There is no further progress... it just loops over and over again. It appears that there is disk activity going on before each message is printed to the console. I noticed that the image that I downloaded is not available anymore on cdimage.ubuntu.com. Now there's no powerpc image at all... [Bug 857170] [NEW] Kernel oops when mounting UDF volume
Public bug reported: After installing kernel version 2.6.38-11-powerpc64-smp to my PowerMac G5 Quad I noticed that upon logging in with a CD inserted, the system would throw an error during login and while it doesn't seem like an actual panic, the system was unusable after this error. I investigated some more and realized that it was upon attempting to mount the inserted CD (with UDF) that the error was thrown. I can reproduce this error manually with the following recipe: - Start the computer, boot Linux with kernel 2.6.38-11-powerpc64-smp. - Skip graphical login and VT-switch to console one and log in. - Attempt to mount /dev/hda (which the device assigned to the built-in DVD-RW) as UDF as in the following example: --- $ sudo mount -t udf /dev/hda mountpoint [ 84.594281] Unable to handle kernel paging request for data at address 0x0320 [ 84.594303] Faulting instruction address: 0xc025adbc [ 84.594317] Oops: Kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1] [ 84.594329] SMP NR_CPUS=1024 NUMA PowerMac [ 84.594347] last sysfs file: /sys/module/crc_itu_t/initstate [ 84.594360] Modules linked in: udf sha256_generic aes_generic parport_pc ppdev lp parport dm_crypt binfmt_misc rfcomm sco bnep l2cap btusb bluetooth sil164 nouveau drm_kms_helper ttm drm snd_aoa_codec_onyx snd_aoa_fabric_layout snd_aoa arc4 b43 mac80211 cfg80211 snd_aoa_i2sbus snd_aoa_soundbus rtc_generic snd_powermac snd_pcm snd_page_alloc snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq snd_timer snd_seq_device snd soundcore raid10 raid456 async_pq async_xor xor async_raid6_recov raid6_pq async_memcpy async_tx raid1 raid0 multipath linear md_mod windfarm_cpufreq_clamp windfarm_max6690_sensor windfarm_lm75_sensor windfarm_smu_sensors windfarm_smu_controls windfarm_pm112 windfarm_pid windfarm_smu_sat windfarm_core dm_mirror dm_region_hash dm_log hid_apple sg usbhid ssb hid mmc_core firewire_ohci sd_mod tg3 crc_t10dif firewire_core uninorth_agp crc_itu_t [ 84.594753] NIP: c025adbc LR: c025ada8 CTR: c053d560 [ 84.594768] REGS: c001726675c0 TRAP: 0300 Not tainted (2.6.38-11-powerpc64-smp) [ 84.594781] MSR: 90009032 EE,ME,IR,DR CR: 24448442 XER: 2000 [ 84.594819] DAR: 0320, DSISR: 4000 [ 84.594830] TASK = c0016b11d130[2137] 'mount' THREAD: c00172664000 CPU: 1 [ 84.594847] GPR00: c00172667840 c1160190 c13f58c0 [ 84.594876] GPR04: c00179306dd0 c0195a08 a000 [ 84.594905] GPR08: c0017bfd4c00 c13f58c8 5e86cff07c1b7400 [ 84.594934] GPR12: 2428 cff60280 10114ec8 [ 84.594964] GPR16: [ 84.594993] GPR20: 100231f8 c118e580 [ 84.595022] GPR24: c00179306da0 ffe2 0083 [ 84.595051] GPR28: c00179306d80 c00179306d80 c10ae9b8 c00172667840 [ 84.595087] NIP [c025adbc] .blkdev_get+0x16c/0x2c0 [ 84.595100] LR [c025ada8] .blkdev_get+0x158/0x2c0 [ 84.595111] Call Trace: [ 84.595119] [c00172667840] [c025ada8] .blkdev_get+0x158/0x2c0 (unreliable) [ 84.595141] [c00172667900] [c025b0d4] .blkdev_get_by_path+0x54/0xd0 [ 84.595159] [c001726679a0] [c0210970] .mount_bdev+0x80/0x2b0 [ 84.595181] [c00172667a80] [d1c62a2c] .udf_mount+0x4c/0x70 [udf] [ 84.595197] [c00172667b20] [c020ffac] .vfs_kern_mount+0xcc/0x300 [ 84.595214] [c00172667be0] [c02102b4] .do_kern_mount+0x74/0x160 [ 84.595230] [c00172667c90] [c023ba70] .do_mount+0x250/0x2d0 [ 84.595248] [c00172667d60] [c0278814] .compat_sys_mount+0x174/0x2c0 [ 84.595265] [c00172667e30] [c00085b0] syscall_exit+0x0/0x40 [ 84.595280] Instruction dump: [ 84.595290] 6b5a0001 0b1a 3b40 7fa3eb78 3880 fb430051 4be7f99d 6000 [ 84.595327] 880d01dc 2f80 409e00f8 7c2004ac 80160320 3920 9137 7809c7e3 [ 84.600364] ---[ end trace efdcc03d2a77700c ]--- --- I have verified that this problem does not occur with kernel version 2.6.38-10-powerpc64-smp. [Bug 672873] Re: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC
Well, it wasn't meant to be a final permanent solution anyway. I just wanted to demontrate that the patch does fix the problem. [Bug 672873] Re: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC
For eveyone's convenience, I uploaded an 'endian-fixed' version of libglib to my web site: http://www.catacombae.org/glibfix-ppc/libglib2.0-0_2.26.0-0ubuntu1_powerpc.deb I only applied the patch specific to endianness (fe225e7e7c7424fbfbdeb63c41db63c21f8f7751) to produce this build. However I think it would make a lot of sense to completely forward to upstream version 2.26.1 as there are more fixes in there. ** Patch added: Patch that fixes the endianness issues in libglib 2.26. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glib2.0/+bug/672873/+attachment/1777376/+files/fe225e7e7c7424fbfbdeb63c41db63c21f8f7751.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/672873 Title: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 391224] Re: open-vm-tools should recommend open-vm-toolbox
This bugfix totally annoys me, because when I attempt to install open- vm-tools on an Ubuntu Server machine with no X11, I suddently get the entire X server and tons of libraries as dependencies. I have to turn of automatic resolution of 'recommends' and sit and manually pick out which recommends I need. I disagree on the main point of this bug. If you choose to install open- vm-tools, you do _not_ want the toolbox and all its GUI dependencies. I think people can make this choice themselves. Perhaps the sane thing to do would be to rename the packages like for instance OpenJDK which has openjdk-jre-headless for when you don't run a GUI system and don't want those dependencies, and openjdk-jre for the common case where there is a GUI available. open-vm-tools-headless vs. open-vm-tools (full GUI)? -- open-vm-tools should recommend open-vm-toolbox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/391224 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
