[Bug 357036] [NEW] memory leak discovered in system monitor

2009-04-07 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Ubuntu 8.10.
Using system monitor, under the processes tab, it is apparent that the system
monitor is growing slowly over time with no apparent end, eventually crippling
the computer unless closed down. The issue also affects the gnome panel plug in.
Version 2.24.1-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 357036] Re: memory leak discovered in system monitor

2009-04-07 Thread warren
with respect to bug #307472
That sounds familiar, but I definitely think it is the system monitor, because
I reproduced the problem three times in one night, and the second time I
returned memory use back to normal by closing the system monitor rather than
the panel plugin. Also, the third time I fixed the problem by closing the
plugin only, not the panel.

I have launched the gnome system monitor under valgrind as per
instructions, however it is slow, I think it may take all day to
reproduce the problem.

[Bug 357036] Re: memory leak discovered in system monitor

2009-04-08 Thread warren
Here is the valgrind log. The system monitor became unresponsive and
fail to update screen a minute or two in, so I was not able to get any
information from it, but memory was being consumed. Just recently my
other applications became highly unresponsive, so I shut them down,
waiting until the last to kill the system monitor. In response to
Sebastian, I thought multiload-applet-2 was something that the gnome
toolbars used.

Re: [Bug 433660] Re: package linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic 2.6.28-15.52 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-10-10 Thread Warren
Hi,

I fixed it by following a work around I found on the web. I unintalled the
nvidia drivers and then reinstalled them
in one command line. I can't remember where I found it but it fixed the
problem completely! I don't use nvidia
drivers on my laptop which was part of the problem.

I hope that works for you.

I think this bug has been marked as a duplicate in error: The
symptomology is different. When the bug occurs, the screen never blanks
completely, although I am (was recently) experiencing another error that
does. It appears to be a drive mount failure, however..

[Bug 475772] [NEW] totem locks the dvd drive after media is ejected

2009-11-05 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem likes to lock the DVD drive when a DVD is ejected after the drive is
closed again. I tried a manual software eject with the eject command to no

[Bug 357036] Re: memory leak discovered in system monitor

2009-04-10 Thread warren
What difference? Could you clarify your question? I thought I explained
in my observances in my last comment. The system was behaving as I would
expect when ram was full and swap was heavily taxed, and top agreed with
me. I took a peek at the log and it appears that no libraries have been
tooled for observation, so perhaps your right. I have had no problem
whatsoever reproducing this error, why don't you try producing it on
your computer?

If you press F11 when Firefox has focus both of your problems should go
away. If this does not solve your problem check out the bug that this
bug has been marked as a duplicate of.

[Bug 123500] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Alt-key behavior doesn't match the rest of Ubuntu

2009-08-13 Thread warren
Possible related bug: For some inexplicable reason, every thirty
seconds or so on my computer, openoffice opens the file menu. If I wait
thirty seconds the file menu is closed. I believe this bug combined with
another is causing this problem.

[Bug 403339] [NEW] problem with key repeat, extra key up events

2009-07-23 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is a well known bug discussed elsewhere, the problem is although
there are fixes available, none have been implemented. When a key is
held down, the system should wait a bit then generate a string of key
down events. The key up event should only be triggered when the key is
actually physically released. Currently, key presses produce a chain of
key down and key up events. Based on what I have read, the error is
introduced in a sloppy fix of another problem, where some legitimate key
up events were not occurring. This is only a serious problem for video
games, as other software does not require exacting standards for input.

Although the undirect fullscreen windows fix worked for me, I still

The author of this bug states that garbage appears on the screen when a

background.

I reported this bug using the ubuntu-bug tool, and it added the
regression tag automatically, even though I was NOT using unity with
Maverick.

I did mention that there is a thread on the Ubuntu forums about this
that included screenshots, but I might as well attach them to this too.

The orginal bug is https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/889519

If there's some way to attach all the collected data to that one
instead, and close this one, then that's probably a good idea.

[Bug 801356] Re: Lines appear at the top of the desktop, and at the bottom of some windows

2011-11-09 Thread Will Warren
Hi Bryce, thanks for your comments.

I have upgraded and am using Oneiric now.

The issues with the unity overlay's transparency have been resolved,
however there are still lines at the top of the screen when the desktop
is focused. When an app is running full screen, there are no issues.

I'm not sure how to proceed with this. Should I file a new bug under
Oneiric or just change this one?

Just as an FYI, I recently tested out GNOME3 on the same hardware and
that looks great, except all the UI fonts are scrambled. This leads me
to believe that it's not a Unity bug, but an ati one.

[Bug 660266] Re: wired/wireless networking unstable on Dell Inspiron 9100

2010-10-28 Thread Warren
Today I upgraded Firefox to 3.6.12 and the kernel to 2.6.35-23.36. The
problem persists. The system simply won't run on this kernel. I have to
boot the old 2.6.32.25 to be able to even get this message to you.

As before, the system hangs -- no keyboard, no mouse, no interactivity
in any way. CPU seems to go full tilt based on sound of the fans. The
system will run for a few seconds to at most two minutes after boot,
then hangs. The problem seems to crash when Firefox and other internet
apps are in use.

[Bug 403339] Re: problem with key repeat, extra key up events

2010-05-05 Thread warren
to Martin Renold:
I must confess I do not entirely understand your statement.

My reasoning is as follows:
1) xev is the primary tool used to test and diagnose x11 windowing input events.
2) I can confirm that the error as produced in xev is also produced in java
windowing events, and I would assume any other windowing events.
3) the behaviour is wrong because it is not industry standard.
4) the behaviour is wrong because it destroys information that some programs
need.

Therefore, the behaviour is both wrong and should be demonstrated by
xev.

I could not get your reproducer to work: Might I suggest that we may
have slightly different bugs? A solution in c might not work for java
or flash.

[Bug 551121] Re: unable to power off with kernel 2.6.31-21 generic

2010-04-27 Thread Warren
Jeremy,

I installed the latest kernel I could find for Karmic and i386,
according to the directions on the link provided. These files were
installed:

linux-headers-2.6.34-020634rc2_2.6.34-020634rc2_all.deb
linux-headers-2.6.34-020634rc2-generic_2.6.34-020634rc2_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.34-020634rc2-generic_2.6.34-020634rc2_i386.deb

All installed cleanly. On reboot the 2.6.34rc2 kernel was visible on the
GRUB menu. Unfortunately, it was unbootable. Several attempts. Nothing
but black screen with CPU running full bore, guessing by the fan speed.
Once it got as far as the little black Ubuntu logo in the center of the
black screen before hanging.

Perhaps there was a better choice of kernels to test?

[Bug 551121] Re: unable to power off with kernel 2.6.31-21 generic

2010-04-28 Thread Warren
Jeremy,

I also tried the latest nightly build:

linux-headers-2.6.34-999_2.6.34-999.201004281008_all.deb
linux-headers-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201004281008_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201004281008_i386.deb

That kernel boots fine, but the problem with shutdown persists. With that
kernel I get a partial listing of actions on the screen as the kernel shuts
down processes, ending with the line:
* Will now halt.

[Bug 426455] [NEW] compiz corruption on standby resume

2009-09-08 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Context:
Restricted Graphics driver, full desktop effects and then some.

When this happens, (50/50 chance) the most obvious symptom is the
complete lack of window borders, (including the menu bar I think),
however, every other feature compiz provides is disabled. Luckily, the
console I have opened is always put on top at the upper left of the
screen. To give it focus, I only have to mouse over.

Workarounds:
? sudo killall Xorg (requires login)
? compiz (works for a time, then exits, and everything is back to normal)

[Bug 660266] [NEW] wired/wireless networking unstable on Dell Inspiron 9100

2010-10-13 Thread Warren
Public bug reported:

Immediately after install of Maverick on Dell Inspiron 9100 the
networking has become very unstable. When an application attempts to
establish a network connection (eg. Firefox connect to Google) the
system intermittently hangs. No mouse, no keyboard, no activity of any
kind. The display freezes. The only recourse is to push the power button
until power is shut off.

This is reproducible about 75% of the time by simply launching Firefox
and then attempting any internet connection. It also occurs when opening
system utilities that use networking, for example Synaptic Package
Manager.

This did not occur, at all, before the upgrade to Maverick. It began

Forgot to add: When I boot the old kernel, 2.6.32.25-generic, the
problem goes away even though the rest of the system is 'Maverick'.

[Bug 551121] [NEW] unable to power off from GUI or terminal shutdown

2010-03-29 Thread Warren
Public bug reported:

This is similar to several bugs reported in the past but just
(re)appeared with kernel update from 2.6.31-20 generic to 2.6.31-21. It
is clearly attributable to the kernel update. I can reboot the older
kernel and it shuts down just fine. Boot the new kernel and the computer
won't power off on shutdown.

Running 2.6.31-21 it won't power off from either a terminal window ($
shutdown now -P) or from the GUI.

Computer is a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop, 2GB ram, Ubuntu 9.10.

[Bug 403339] Re: problem with key repeat, extra key up events

2011-01-25 Thread warren
Workaround:
Works for all games that do not work properly because of keyup events.
Type
xset r off
into console.
Works even if game is already running.
Remember to type
xset r on
for normal operation afterwards.

I have already used this for some flash games that gave me trouble in
the past.

Re: [Bug 1029149] Re: gparted automatically starts scanning all devices slowly and never completing the task

2012-07-31 Thread warren
Melchiaros,

I used a USB stick created using the Startup disk creator with the FAT32
single partition with 1gb persistence ext2. When I look at the USB stick
using gparted it shows only one partition. I am not certain that this bug
matches the bug you referred to 121943 since there was no external HD just
usb flash drive live medium. The bugs do seem similar with cpu 100% even
after gparted is closed. I did get ubuntu updates on the usb persistence
which seemed to clear up the gparted not functioning properly.

I hope this helps and is not too late.

minimize, maximize, and close buttons.
4) 4 of the ace of penguins games had the title bar while 8 did not have the

attached file with screenshots of those with the title bar and those without
the title bar.
