On karmic the functions keys are not working with Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.
F. ex. with F1 no help appears and it is not possible to switch to a terminal
console with Strg-Alt F1.

No. There is an important feature in synaptic I am missing in aptitude:
In the changes tab under Description of update (c.f. screenshot) you

fn keys reversed and touchpad not working on thinkpad x121e does not
only show up after suspend but also from time to time after normal boot
(Xubuntu 12.04, 64bit). Only workaround I know so far: reboot 1 or 2
