No, always. It does not depend upon the mode. Keyboard buttons by default can not control sound level and mute (unmute) in Gnome Mplayer as well as in adobe-flashplugin. Surely, I can map amixer cli interface to these buttons. (e.g. amixer set Master 5%+ or amixer set Master mute) but
