[Bug 1877288] [NEW] Text in top bar is scaled wrong

2020-05-07 Thread Øyvind Skaaden
Public bug reported:

## What is the bug
When upgradig to Ubuntu 20.04, it also updated Gnome to 3.36.1.
When using my ultrawide (and configuring it via xrandr because the gnome config
tool does not work properly) the top bar is behaving strange.
When no windows are open, the top bar "Activities" are showing correctly, but
when opening a window, the text and hitbox doubles in height. The part with the
tray icons and power/internet etc is wrong all the time. See attached image.

## What happened
Text and open programs field double the bar height. Also affects the tray area.

## What did you expect to happen
Normal height on top bar.

[Bug 1775923] Re: gpg can't access secret keys when logged in via ssh instead of desktop

2018-08-19 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I had the same type of problem when attempting to decrypt using gpg2 on
a remote host, logged in via ssh from Ubuntu 18.04 client. Turned out
that GPG2 was unable to ask for passphrase via X-forwarding. I got it
working by disabling X forwarding ("ssh -x .." or "unset DISPLAY"),
which triggers a text-only pop-up asking for passphrase in the terminal.

[Bug 1778338] [NEW] Failed install 18.04 64bit form usb made bootable by 18.04 32bit

2018-06-23 Thread Øyvind Mjøs
Public bug reported:

Under installation I got a message saying that the system could not boot
because grub-installer failed. I have a 32bit 18.04 version, but want a
64bit version installed aside the first one. I made the usb pen bootable
in the 32bit system. It booted ok, and I chose to install aside with the
32bit system. I also slided the two partitions, to make the one smaller
and hopefully get the bigger size for the 64bit system.

[Bug 1645631] Re: Sending files fails because obex not loaded

2017-05-02 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Thanks for reporting, I was just struck by this bug on 17.04.

For a fix which lasts across reboots, run as normal user:
systemctl --user enable obex

This permanently enables OBEX service for your user sessions.

[Bug 1687275] [NEW] Dell track stick pointer is too slow [libinput]

2017-04-30 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

The track stick on my Dell E7440 has become almost unusable as a general
pointing device on Ubuntu 17.04, due to the slow speed and acceleration.
It literally takes 2+ seconds to move the pointer from left to right end
of a 1920-width screen with full force, and it is worse in the vertical
direction, since it is physically more difficult to apply the same
force.

I am using the max acceleration speed the libinput driver has to offer
of "1.0":

Section "InputClass"
Identifier"DualPoint Stick"
MatchIsPointer"true"
MatchProduct"DualPoint Stick"
MatchDevicePath"/dev/input/event*"

# When using libinput:
Option "AccelSpeed" "1"
[...]

I even modified the udev hardware database, after some research, to attempt to
adjust low level device characteristics:
/etc/udev/hwdb.d/70-dell-pointing-stick.hwdb:

# Latitude E7440
evdev:name:*DualPoint Stick:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnDellInc.:pnLatitudeE7440*:pvr*
 POINTINGSTICK_CONST_ACCEL=10.0
 POINTINGSTICK_SENSITIVITY=300

This rule successfully matches the pointing stick input device,
confirmed by "udevadm info ...", but the settings still appear to have
no effect on the actual behaviour in Xorg. The Xorg log even picks up
the (very high) constant acceleration factor:

[ 5.146] (II) input device 'AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint Stick',
/dev/input/event6 is tagged by udev as: Mouse Pointingstick
[ 5.146] (II) Device 'AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint Stick' set to const accel
10.00
[ 5.146] (II) input device 'AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint Stick',
/dev/input/event6 is a pointer caps
[ 5.176] (**) Option "AccelSpeed" "1"
[ 5.176] (**) Option "ScrollMethod" "none"
[ 5.176] (**) Option "config_info"
"udev:/sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input8/event6"
[ 5.176] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint
Stick" (type: MOUSE, id 13)
[...]

I tried uninstalling xserver-xorg-input-libinput and instead installed
xserver-xorg-input-evdev. This brings back old behaviour of previous
Ubuntu releases, with accompanying xorg.conf options, and at least
allows to speed it up using the various acceleration options supported
by generic Xorg input frameworks and the evdev driver. But it is not a
nice solution.

Also I should mention, the mouse sensitivity settings in the Ubuntu
control panel, which was the first place I went to attemt to fix things,
have absolutely zero effect on the track stick.

[Bug 1510344] Re: Keyboard Backlight Turns on at boot

2016-03-30 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Same issue on Dell E7440 with Wily kernel (in my case the HWE-kernel for
Ubuntu 14.04). Keyboard backlight user control is not respected, and it
turns on at various conditions, including boot and screen wake up from
sleep.

[Bug 1384297] Re: After system resume, Intel i915 graphics hangs

2015-08-27 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I cannot be 100% certain, but I am reasonably sure this particular
problem has vanished for me after I upgraded to the latest LTS
enablement stack (kernel 3.19 and newer Xorg components from vivid). I
still see some suspend related traces in kernel log, but they are not
the same, and in practice I experience less issues.

[Bug 1279564] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in nux::Propertybool::Set()

2015-04-23 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I'm seeing segfault crashes in the same method
(nux::Propertybool::Set()) on resume from suspend, and it typically
causes the lockscreen to hang for a short time, then the session dies
due to the Compiz crash. After session death I'm back to login screen.
This problem occurs often enough to become annoying.

I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 with LTS enablement upgrades (kernel
3.16.0-36-generic, updated Xorg) and -proposed enabled. Intel Haswell
graphics.

[Bug 1384342] Re: kernel messages intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips correlate to compiz hang

2015-04-14 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I experience this at least once per day on a Ubuntu 14.04-installation
with LTS hardware enablement upgrade to kernel 3.16 (and newer Xorg
components). Typically, full screen video playback will suddenly freeze
(audio continues to play). At that point I must switch to VT 1, which
takes about a minute to happen, and then back to VT 7, to unfreeze the
desktop. The error in the kernel log does not appear immediately, but
rather after having switched to VT 1
(intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips+0x171/0x180). Typically, the app that
was playing video will crash.

System (Shuttle-based HTPC) uses an Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3225 CPU and
integrated graphics:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen
Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)

Happened with all 3.16 kernel releases up to 3.16.0-34-generic so far.

2015-02-25 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Same issue occured on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS after upgrading kernel to 3.16,
and Xorg (LTS hardware enablement program). Screen was frozen, but I
was able to recover by switching to a VT and restarting X (switching
eventually worked after a long delay). Never any problems of this sort
with the 3.13-kernel. (Intel HD 4000 Ivy Bridge).

I am not able to reproduce, and I do not really know what triggered it,

was not successful at reproducing by running the same load patterns
again at a later time.

[Bug 1258837] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] ALPS touchpad keeps having state reset

2014-10-17 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Christopher, I have the issue in this bug – there is no doubt. Can you
please explain what value there will be in another duplicate bug report
? I shall refrain from comments that are off-topic for *this* bug, like
the keyboard-repeats, which may or may not be related.

Still a problem with latest BIOS A11 released by Dell a day ago. Just to
keep the bug alive, because it very much is.

[Bug 1373839] Re: Kernel crash IP: [ffffffff81173703] list_lru_walk_node+0xe3/0x160

2014-09-25 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Judging by the IP and call trace, I cannot say that I remember this particular
BUG or anything like it for the kernel in question. (I
usually check for hints in logs after hard crashes like this one.)

There has been one earlier crash with the kernel in question (not
reported), but the call trace for that has ext4 functions in it. It also
happened seemingly at random and caused a hard freeze. I've attached the
kernel log BUG, even though it might not be related.

** Attachment added: Another earlier BUG crash from the same kernel on same
machine, but different call trace, etc.

Re: [Bug 1301601] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] suspend sometimes freezes when lock screen activates

2014-09-24 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Lê Kiến Trúc 1301...@bugs.launchpad.net writes:

I have the same problem. I will try the work around from Øyvind
Stegard (oyvinst). The problem is also on Windows so I think this is
just a work around. Another problem is some time the keypress is
repeat until I press another key. Both on Ubuntu and Windows

For this matter, I have had success with WORKAROUND-2, and thus I am
able to keep my lock screen on suspend. Not bullettproof, but I rarely
get suspend hangs now.

Do notice that since the time of this bug report, there have been
several kernel updates, so that might also matter. To determine if that
is the case, I'd have to run without any workarounds for a while and
look out for new hang incidents. Have you experienced the suspend hang
with the latest 14.04-kernel in -updates (kernel 3.13.0-36.63) ?

Slightly off topic, but:
Yeah, the current BIOS on this Dell model is obviously buggy. I did send
a complaint to Dell support. The support case was closed after some
dialogue (I ended up downgrading to BIOS A08), but I hope they forwarded
the technical matters to the right people and that a future BIOS version
will have more fixes for both keyboard, touchpad and suspend/resume.

I don't need to add the printed to make it crash. I've tried adding it
using 1  2.

With *no* printer added to the system, if I bring up the Print
requester(picture attached), then printer reboots.

2014-08-22 Thread Øyvind Harboe
As soon as this Print requester is displayed, the printer reboots.

There is *NO* printer added to my machine at all, and yes, the Xerox
printer then reboots.

Apparently there is some sort of broadcast() that happens from my PC
in this case which causes the printer to die.

2014-08-22 Thread Øyvind Harboe
I can print a test-page using a socket printer.

However, it still crashes when I bring up the print requester.

How do I purge all IPP references to my printer from the system or how
do I stop Ubuntu from querying my printer in that fashion?

I only see my printer listed as a socket printer.

oyvind@iceage:/etc$ sudo grep -r 10.0.0.12 *
cups/printers.conf:DeviceURI socket://10.0.0.12:9100

2014-08-22 Thread Øyvind Harboe
I went onto the printer and chose Network services and disabled all
but the 9100 service.

I can now print out.

While the problem isn't fixed as such, this should allow me to run this
printer for a few more years. At that point it should be ready for the
scrap-heap anyway.

Perhaps the best course of action is to list this bug as won't fix?
Really, printers shouldn't reboot upon being queried these days...

[Bug 1357920] [NEW] Xerox Phaser 8560DN reboots as soon as I bring up the Print requester

[Bug 1357920] Re: Xerox Phaser 8560DN reboots as soon as I bring up the Print requester

2014-08-17 Thread Øyvind Harboe
I tried purging cups and resinstalling, including deleting
/etc/init.d/cups/printers.config* and have *no* printers added to the
system.

*STILL* the Xerox printer reboots. This is very annoying because, it
means that I can't even print to PDF and then print that PDF from
Windows without the printer rebooting.

Here's how I purged and reinstalled cups:

sudo apt-get purge cups sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cups

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2014-07-31 Thread Øyvind Jelstad
Looks like I have this problem on 12.04.1 LTS with kernel
3.2.0-67-generic #101-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 15 17:46:11 UTC 2014 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on the host and Debian Wheezy on the guest (SMP
Debian 3.2.60-1+deb7u3 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

The guest will occationally loose connection with other hosts on the LAN, and
their entries in the arp table on the guest are gone.
Only sporadic forwarding of arp replies on the host back to the guest seem to
be the problem.

Dumping arp request (triggered by a ping from guest) on the bridge
external (real) interface on the host catches both requests and replies,
while the same dump on vnet0 misses replies for minutes until a reply
suddeny comes through and reestablishes connection.

I am using virtio interface. It makes no difference if I change to
e1000. FW policy is ACCEPT on all tables.

2014-07-28 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Jeffrey Knockel jeff...@gmail.com writes:

Øyvind, I experienced that when I upgraded to BIOS A10 from A08.
Fortunately, I was able to downgrade from A10 back to A08. I suspect
that either A10 has an issue or it just pokes even harder at this bug
than A08 did. (A10 cites Keyboard input improvement as one of its
fixes, which is probably the relevant change.)

Yeah, probably when it started; I cannot remember the repeat problem
from when the computer was new. And Keyboard input improvement fix on
revision 10 of a BIOS scares me. Such basics, and yet they allow
themselves to screw it up. I've sent a support request to Dell under
warranty and told them to inform the BIOS team. Can't hurt, though not
really expecting anything but a boiler plate response..

(I tried resetting BIOS by loading defaults, but I still have issues
with repeating keys.)

Stalling suspend for a few seconds did not help. Now testing console
switch workaround (switch to VT-1 at suspend, then switch back to VT-7
at resume.). So far this is looking better, and it might be preventing
the hanging lock screen. Need to observe longer for any conclusions.

2014-06-19 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I feel certain now that this is somehow connected to lock screen, so I
updated the bug title accordingly. Now on kernel 3.13.0-30-generic with
the problem still present. Currently testing a workaround where suspend
is stalled a few seconds by an /etc/pm/sleep.d script to allow
lockscreen fade animation to complete before machine is actually
suspended.

Re: [Bug 1272624] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] 14.04 Touchpad causing mouse pointer to spuriously jump around screen

2014-06-07 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Mark Smith mrksm...@amazon.com writes:

I'm on an E7240 running 12.04 LTS (anxiously awaiting my employeer to
certify 14.04 with all our internal tools and what-not) and I have this

[...]

 - Touch the pad near the middle or bottom. The cursor moves slightly as my
 finger wiggles around.
 - Without removing the first finger, touch the pad again with a second finger
above the first finger. The cursor shoots up to a[1]=0 (which is the y
 position).
 - Without removing the first finger, remove the second (top) finger. The
 cursor
shoots back down to a[1]=some large number Sometimes it takes it all the way
to the bottom of the screen, sometimes it goes back to where it was, or
somewhere else. I haven't been able to figure out how it decides what to go
 back
 to.

I can confirm this behaviour also on Ubuntu 14.04 on the Latitude E7440
(AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad). Kernel 3.13.0-29.53 x86-64.

[...]

 Similarly:

 - Touch the bad near the top.
 - Without removing the top finger, touch somewhere near the bottom. The
 cursor doesn't (yet) move.
 - Lift the top finger. The cursor shoots to the bottom.
 - Put down the top finger again, without lifting the bottom. The
 cursor shoots back up again.

This as well.

[Bug 1301601] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] suspend failure

2014-06-06 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Hangs do not occur if the lock screen is disabled at suspend. Perhaps
this problem is somehow related to a bad interaction when lock screen is
activating while suspend is kicking in.

(Not having a lock screen at suspend is rather bad for security, so I'd
like to avoid it as a workaround.)

[Bug 1315611] [NEW] Keyboard shortcut CTRL+D for adding bookmark not working [Firefox 29, clean profile]

2014-05-03 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

The age old keyboard shortcut for adding a bookmark for current page is
no longer working properly in Firefox 29.

Starting Firefox with a clean and new profile, the bookmark menu shows
keyboard shortcut for Add bookmark being set to CTRL+R, and that
conflicts with page reload. And indeed the page reloads when pressing
Ctrl+R, while CTRL+D is doing nothing.

However, if Firefox is started in safe mode, then Ctrl+D works as
expected and opens bookmark window for current page.

Note again:
. Starting Firefox in safe-mode: CTRL+D works.
. Starting Firefox with clean and new profile (no cruft or extensions): CTRL+D
does not work.

[Bug 1315611] Re: Keyboard shortcut CTRL+D for adding bookmark not working [Firefox 29, clean profile]

2014-05-03 Thread Øyvind Stegard
They key here seems to be locale.

When started with default English locale, by setting LANG=C in
environment, the bug does not occur and CTRL+D works for bookmarking.
However, with Norwegian locale (LANG=nb_NO.UTF-8), it does not work and
CTRL+R is marked in menu as shortcut for bookmarking.

In Safe Mode, Firefox seems to use English locale regardless of
environment, which may explain why the bug does not occur then.

command key for bookmarkThisPageCmd is set to R:

which is also true for page reload command key:
410:!ENTITY reloadCmd.commandkey r

This cannot be right ? R is not a mnemonic in Norwegian for remembering or
storing anything, and there should be a good reason to change a standard
keyboard shortcut that's been present for years.

En English langpack for Firefox, the proper D is assigned to
bookmarkThisPageCmd.

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-04-20 Thread Øyvind
So - I have tried to fix my this problem, but I am having real
difficulties.

I have booted Boot-Repair from USB, but I have to set the BIOS to Legacy mode.
EFI mode shoes the GRUB, and boot repair is an option but it does not boot at
all.

When I booted Boot-Repair (in Legacy) I am get all kinds of error
messages (It needs to connect to the Internet, I am in Legacy mode etc).

So I downloaded 13.10 and made a LiveUSB - Was able to boot in UEFI mode and
did what was discribed in post #60.
However, at the end the boot-repair said that I had experienced some sort of
error without specifying - it was logged to http://paste.ubuntu.com/7292867.
Tried to reboot - no go. In UEFI mode, Sony's Automatic Repair Tool start,
and in Legacy Operating System not found

I had similar problems with I first installed Ubuntu as I wanted to keep
the Windows 8 Recovery Partitions just in case i did not like Ubuntu -
That time the Boor-Repair fixed the issue.

.. I am also a bit curious why this has not been taken more seriosly.
It seems that the Ubuntu officials are not regonizing this bug.

Any other options I should try?

2014-04-19 Thread Øyvind
Experienced the bug here too.
Sony Vaio Pro Haswell Laptop. I did not touch the GRUB. Just clicked update in
Update Center.

For those of us that are not extremely Linux Savvy - What is the best
way to fix? Running boot-repair from LiveUSB?

[Bug 1305294] [NEW] VLC incorrectly themed when launched from indicator-sound

2014-04-09 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

When launching VLC from the sound indicator applet, the QT UI theme is
wrong. The theme is correct when launched from Unity launcher or
terminal. Please see the attached screenshots.

I've tracked it down to a difference in environment in the VLC process:
When launched from indicator-sound, the variable
GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID is unset, and this causes VLC to become themed
incorrectly. (If the variable is given any value, then VLC looks
correct.)

To reproduce, either:
1) Launch VLC from indicator-sound (make sure it's not already running and has
been started from somewhere else)
2) Or just start VLC like this from terminal:
$ GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID= vlc

Not sure whether this is a general bug in QT (since, apparently,
GNOME_SESSION_DESKTOP_ID is deprecated), a bug in indicator-sound for
not setting GNOME_SESSION_DESKTOP_ID, or just a bug in VLC.

 hibernation work well.

Actually, both are unreliable for me, but in different ways.

Sleep/s3: sometimes the machine fails to suspend (freezes before it can
power down). If suspend succeeds, then resume always works. That's this
bug report.

[Hibernate/s4: sometimes thaw/resume after boot results in black screen and
hang. Not this bug.]

[Bug 1271591] Re: upstart job race prevents gnome-keyring from being ssh agent

2014-04-07 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I have chosen to unlock my GPG key at login time. In processes launched
by Unity, I sometimes get the GPG_AGENT_INFO environment variable set,
but other times (in other login sessions) not. So likely some kind of
race. From terminal launched with Ctrl+Alt+T, the variable always seems
to be available. (Emacs, which I usually launch from Unity, needs this
variable to connect to gpg agent.)

Fully updated 14.04 and clean installation.

[Bug 1301601] Re: [Dell Inc. Latitude E7440] suspend/resume failure

2014-04-05 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Just had another freeze at suspend. Display was still on, but frozen
right in the middle of the fade between desktop and lockscreen appearing
before machine should have suspended (same thing as first occurence). So
this bug is really about a failure to suspend, since it actually never
manages to reach that state.

I find nothing interesting in any logs under /var/log.

The last thing that appears in pm-suspend.log before freeze:
Fri Apr 4 23:42:00 CEST 2014: performing suspend

[Bug 1301601] Re: [Dell Inc. Latitude E7440] suspend/resume failure

2014-04-03 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Unless I hit the problem again, this bug will likely just fade into
oblivion, as I have no way to reliably reproduce the problem. And that
makes it hard to determine whether a mainline kernel helps or not.
