I was able to successful install fglrx-updates package manually. Don't
know if it works properly (at leas I don't see any issue), but in the
drivers window it is not marked as installed.

I've confirmed this problem with several 10.04 LTS (amd64) machines VM's
running on a VMware vSphere system. Each machine that had an uptime of
211 days suffered a sudden softlockup, triggered by an innocent-looking
'apt-get install libyaml-perl'. The machines were running
2.6.32-30-server.

Left clicking on clock applet crashes gnome-panels. Main menu and
shutdown applets disappear. Alt+ F2 key doesn't work. Killing the screen
(Ctrl + Alt + backspace) and logging in again doesn't help. Only booting
the whole system brings the panel functionality back.
Release:
I created a new user account and the problem cannot be reproduced that
account. Logged out from the test account and logged in with my own
account and the clock/date seems to be working. I'll check what happens
after reboot.

I rebooted and the problem was reproduced. All the panels freeze and the
only way I'm able to fix this is to kill the gnome-panel process. After
that the clock applet works as expected.
