[Bug 1393548] [NEW] libvirt's apparmor profile denies access to sgabios.bin

2014-11-17 Thread Adam Gandelman
Public bug reported:

Attempting to use the sgabios ROM to capture early boot BIOS messages on
the serial console. Typically this can be done via libvirt domain
configuration:

Resulting in the qemu process being launched with a '-device sga'
argument that should load the optional ROM.

The sgabios package installs the ROM @ /usr/share/misc/sgabios.bin and
symlinks to it from /usr/share/qemu/sgabios.bin

I noticed the expected serial output was missing and found that apparmor
is preventing sgabios from loading when spawning the VM:

[ 1378.106921] type=1400 audit(1416255684.049:23): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="open" profile="libvirt-c08c4756-2e2c-4c62-a519-0e3ac0cf643d"
name="/usr/share/misc/sgabios.bin" pid=13182 comm="qemu-system-x86"
requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=110 ouid=0

Worked around by manually installing the sgabios.bin file directly to
/usr/share/qemu/sgabios.bin

[Bug 1316475] Re: [SRU] CloudSigma DS for causes hangs when serial console present

2014-06-28 Thread Adam Gandelman
Was able to test the proposed package and verify the issue is resolved.
Test:

1)
- Boot a fresh trusty VM using libvirt
- Install cloud-init
- Reboot
SUCCESS

2)
- Shutdown
- Using libvirt, add a serial device / pty to the domain
- Boot same VM
FAIL (boot hangs)

- Shutdown
- Remove serial device
- Boot same VM, boot succeeds
- Install proposed cloud-init 0.7.5-0ubuntu1.1
- Repeat boot with and without serial port attached and boot succeeds in both
case.

Thanks for the fix.

[Bug 1311987] Re: deploy-ironic ramdisks do not boot: Failed to execute /init (error -28)

2014-04-28 Thread Adam Gandelman
Thanks for the tip Seth.. That appears to work, thanks! I reached out
to Rob and he pointed out that, when using tmpfs, the fs will fill up at
50% memory usage, so the ENOSPC is to be expected here. Now that the
cause is known, I think we can get away with bumping the default and

[Bug 1311987] Re: deploy-ironic ramdisks do not boot: Failed to execute /init (error -28)

2014-04-27 Thread Adam Gandelman
This turns out to be a kernel issue, either upstream or in Ubuntu.
Bisected to the following, which was released in 3.12.

commit 16203a7a9422315bc929461503e3a046459ea5ff
Author: Rob Landley
Date: Wed Sep 11 14:26:12 2013 -0700

initmpfs: make rootfs use tmpfs when CONFIG_TMPFS enabled

Conditionally call the appropriate fs_init function and fill_super
functions. Add a use once guard to shmem_init() to simply succeed on a
second call.

(Note that IS_ENABLED() is a compile time constant so dead code
elimination removes unused function calls when CONFIG_TMPFS is disabled.)

I agree this is an edge case for tripleO but not so much for general
Ironic usage, as admins should be free to declare nodes with as little
memory as they want, and DIB produced deploy-ironic ramdisks should be
expected to work.

[Bug 1248025] Re: libvirt-bin fails to start inside Xen

2014-03-18 Thread Adam Gandelman
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ libvirtd to start within guests of some Xen environments. This has been
+ reported by multiple users of the Rackspace public cloud. libvirt has
+ many use-cases in this environment, most notably driving upstream
+ OpenStack CI efforts. This bug makes libvirt unusable without some
+ manually work arounds.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ On a saucy machine in an affected environment, 'apt-get install libvirt-
+ bin' and watch libvirtd.log for a failure to start up:
+
+ 2013-11-05 03:46:16.290+: 3398: info : libvirt version: 1.1.1
+ 2013-11-05 03:46:16.290+: 3398: error : udevGetDMIData:1558 : Failed to
get udev device for syspath '/sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id' or '/sys/class/dmi/id'
+ 2013-11-05 03:46:16.368+: 3398: error : libxlMakeCapabilities:786 :
internal error: Failed to get node physical info from libxenlight
+ 2013-11-05 03:46:16.368+: 3398: error : libxlStateInitialize:1320 :
cannot create capabilities for libxenlight
+ 2013-11-05 03:46:16.369+: 3398: error : virStateInitialize:838 :
Initialization of LIBXL state driver failed: internal error: Failed to get node
physical info from libxenlight
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Minimal. The proposed patch simply causes libvirt to consider these
+ errors as soft errors (like it does others) and continue to start its
+ service.
+
+
+ --- Original Bug ---
+
On saucy, inside of a Xen virtual machine, libvirt-bin fails to start,
with the following error in /var/log/libvirt/libvirtd.log
-

  2013-11-05 03:46:16.290+: 3398: info : libvirt version: 1.1.1

get udev device for syspath '/sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id' or '/sys/class/dmi/id'
  2013-11-05 03:46:16.368+: 3398: error : libxlMakeCapabilities:786 :
internal error: Failed to get node physical info from libxenlight
  2013-11-05 03:46:16.368+: 3398: error : libxlStateInitialize:1320 :
cannot create capabilities for libxenlight
  2013-11-05 03:46:16.369+: 3398: error : virStateInitialize:838 :
Initialization of LIBXL state driver failed: internal error: Failed to get node
physical info from libxenlight

  How to reproduce:

  * Start a saucy Xen virtual machine (e.g., inside of Rackspace Public Cloud)
  * Install libvirt-bin

  # lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 13.10
  Release: 13.10

Having some trouble reproducing the original issue again using the
current package in saucy-updates (1.1.1-0ubuntu8.2) Seems I was hitting
this consistently last week but now I can no longer trigger the original
issue.

@Dirk- I'm curious if you might revert some of the local changes you've
made and see if the issue surfaces, and if you'd be willing to test the
proposed package on your cluster? The proposed update will be released
to 13.10 once we can get it verified.

nodes using saucy-proposed as an installation source. After successful
bring-up and configuration of the cluster, a number of exercises and
smoke tests have be invoked to ensure the updated package did not
introduce any regressions. A number of test iterations were carried out
to catch any possible transient errors.

These proposed packages were deployed and tested in several different
configurations. Attached are tarballs with various test logs from each
configuration. In addition to the base components, variables in
deployments include:

saucy_havana_nova-network:
- nova-network (FlatDHCP)
- glance (Ceph backend)
- cinder (Ceph backend)

saucy_havana_iscsi:
- nova-network (FlatDHCP)
- glance (local backend)
- cinder (iSCSI backend)

saucy_havana_neutron:
- neutron (OVS plugin)
- glance (Ceph backend)
- cinder (Ceph backend)

Please note the versions_tested file in each tarball, which contains
details about relevant package versions installed and tested.

For records of upstream test coverage of this update, please see the individual
bug reports.
As per the provisional Micro Release Exception granted to this package by the
Technical Board, we hope this contributes toward verification of this update.

[Bug 1244694] Re: Creating snapshot fails due to nonexistent temporary directory

2014-01-16 Thread Adam Gandelman
** Description changed:

- In some cases (not for all instances, just for some) the following error
- prevents creating the snapshot:
+ SRU Justification ---
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ In a libvirt-based OpenStack deployment, Nova fails to snapshot
+ instances, failing with error:
+
+ internal error: unable to execute QEMU command 'drive-mirror': Could not
+ open
+
'/var/lib/nova/instances/snapshots/tmp5DdrIO/236df3e170e64fabaeb3c7601e2d6c47.delta'
+
+ I had originally discovered this bug using the Tempset test suite while
+ verifying an unrelated OpenStack SRU, but other users are experiencing
+ this in the wild.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Deploy an OpenStack cloud based on Ubuntu Saucy and OpenStack Havana,
+ then attempt to snapshot a running instance. The Tempest integration
+ test suite contains a snapshot test case:
+
tempest.api.compute.images.test_images_oneserver.ImagesOneServerTestJSON.test_create_delete_image
+ [1]
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The proposed fix is isolated to the libvirt packaging and simply appends
+ an additional directory exception to the packages apparmor
+ configuration, so that libvirt has appropriate access to the directory
+ used during the process of snapshotting an instance.

[Bug 1242992] Re: Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11

2013-11-25 Thread Adam Gandelman
Can someone please capture how this bug affects the Ubunty python-
keystoneclient package and how to reproduce with whats in the archive
(saucy or trusty)? The original trace appears to implicate non-Ubuntu
stuff installed by devstack (pip installed python-keyring, devstack
installed python-keystoneclient). This looks more like a python-keyring
or devstack issue?

[Bug 1241202] Verification report.

2013-10-27 Thread Adam Gandelman
Please find the attached test log from the Ubuntu Server Team's CI
infrastructure. As part of the verification process for this bug, the
OpenStack components have been deployed and configured across multiple
nodes using raring-proposed as an installation source.

In addition to the base components, variables in
deployments include:

raring_grizzly_nova-network:
- nova-network (FlatDHCP)
- glance (Ceph backend)
- cinder (Ceph backend)

raring_grizzly_iscsi:
- nova-network (FlatDHCP)
- glance (local backend)
- cinder (iSCSI backend)

raring_grizzly_quantum:
- quantum (OVS plugin)
- glance (Ceph backend)
- nova-volume (Ceph backend)

Please note the versions_tested file in each tarball, which contains
details about relevant package versions installed and tested.

For records of upstream test coverage of this update, please see the individual
bug reports.
As per the provisional Micro Release Exception granted to this package by the
Technical Board, we hope this contributes toward verification of this update.

So the above policy-rc.d is present on all systems provisioned with
MAAS+curtin. Wondering if it is cruft from curtin provisioning that
needs to be cleaned up.

When installing the package, the service fails to start due to a invoke-rc.d:

So far I've only hit this on precise nodes that I've provisioned with MAAS
using curtin.

[Bug 1210253] Re: With Havana 2 installed, Launching horizon UI results in the error " NameError: name 'Dashboard' is not defined"

2013-10-10 Thread Adam Gandelman
Just tested with a fresh system and fresh package installation from the
Cloud Archive Havana proposed pocket. Installed horizon
1:2013.2~rc1-0ubuntu2~cloud0 (havana release candidate) and everything
is working fine. Steps to do minimal test:

apt-get install openstack-dashboard
edit /etc/openstack-dashboard/local_settings.py, update OPENSTACK_HOST to point
to your keystone hostname.
restart apache2, surf to http://$host/horizon, login.

Be sure you're using the most recent package version. Note there are 3
pockets in the Cloud Archive and I suspect you are using the -updates
pocket which, during the dev. cycle, does not get as frequent updates as
the -staging and -proposed pockets.

[Bug 1210447] Verification report.

2013-09-19 Thread Adam Gandelman
Please find the attached test log from the Ubuntu Server Team's CI
infrastructure. As part of the verification process for this bug, the
OpenStack components have been deployed and configured across multiple
nodes using raring-proposed as an installation source.

In addition to the base components, variables in
deployments include:

raring_grizzly_nova-network:
- nova-network (FlatDHCP)
- glance (Ceph backend)
- cinder (Ceph backend)

raring_grizzly_iscsi:
- nova-network (FlatDHCP)
- glance (local backend)
- cinder (iSCSI backend)

raring_grizzly_quantum:
- quantum (OVS plugin)
- glance (Ceph backend)
- nova-volume (Ceph backend)

Please note the versions_tested file in each tarball, which contains
details about relevant package versions installed and tested.

For records of upstream test coverage of this update, please see the individual
bug reports.
As per the provisional Micro Release Exception granted to this package by the
Technical Board, we hope this contributes toward verification of this update.

[Bug 1223576] Re: lvremove always fails on first attempt when removing snapshot

2013-09-17 Thread Adam Gandelman
** Description changed:

+ [SRU Justification]
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * Removing LVM snapshots is unreliable on Raring on some hardware.
+ * Tools that abstract LVM actions will likely fail if they expect these
actions
+ to function correctly and reliably. Specifically, OpenStack Cinder requires
+ reliability here.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ The following test case seems to trigger the bug on two classes of
+ hardware I've used, but not on a virtual machine:
+
+ sudo apt-get install lvm2
+ # A free block device
+ BDEV="sdb"
+
+ # Create original LVM volume.
+ pvcreate /dev/$BDEV
+ vgcreate testing-vg /dev/$BDEV
+ lvcreate -L 1024M -n testing test
+
+ # Run a snapshot create/delete cycle and observe frequent failures.
+ lvcreate -L 1024M --name testing-snapshot --snapshot /dev/testing-vg/testing
+ lvremove -f /dev/testing-vg/testing-snapshot
+
+ Example failure:
+
+ $ lvcreate -L 1024M --name testing-snapshot --snapshot /dev/testing-vg/testing
+ $ lvremove -f /dev/testing-vg/testing-snapshot
+ Logical volume "testing-snapshot" created
+ Unable to deactivate open testing--vg-testing-real (252:2)
+ Failed to resume testing.
+
+ [Solution]
+
+ Recent updates in Debian+Saucy to the LVM and dm udev rules seem to
+ alleviate the issue and I no longer see it when applying those changes
+ from lvm2 2.02.98-6ubuntu1 (Patch attached)
+

Comparing output of 'dmsetup info' before and after failed attempts:

- - The failed attempt removes the -cow device

of 0.

[Bug 1225164] Re: [FFe] Merge lvm2 (main) 2.02.98-6 from Debian unstable (main)

2013-09-17 Thread Adam Gandelman
lvm2 (2.02.98-6ubuntu1) saucy; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable, remaining changes:
- debian/patches/avoid-dev-block.patch: Prefer any other device name over
names in /dev/block/ since lvm.conf won't handle this.
- debian/rules:
  - copy .po file to .pot file for Rosetta (Ubuntu specific).
- debian/{dmsetup,lvm2}-udeb.install:
  - install initramfs and udev hooks in udebs (Debian bug 504341).
- auto-start VGs as their PVs are discovered (Ubuntu specific):
  - add debian/tree/lvm2/lib/udev/rules.d/85-lvm2.rules: use watershed plus
the sledgehammer of vgscan/vgchange to turn on VGs as they come online.
  - debian/tree/lvm2/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/hooks/lvm2:
- add 85-lvm2.rules to the list of udev rules to copy.
- depend on udev.
  - debian/control:
- add versioned Depend on watershed in lvm2 for udev rules.
- add Depends on watershed-udeb in lvm2-udeb for udev rules.
- add versioned Depend/Breaks on udev in dmsetup for udev rules.
- add Depend on initramfs-tools in dmsetup so system is not potentially
rendered unbootable by out-of-order dpkg configuration.
- In libdevmapper-event1.02.1 add Breaks: dmeventd
(<< 2.02.95-4ubuntu1) due to debian symbol rename
  - debian/rules:
- do not install local-top scripts since Ubuntu mounts root using udev.
- do not install init scripts for lvm2, since udev starts LVM.
- continue to build clvm support.
  - debian/lvm2.postinst: handle missing lvm2 init script.
- add mountroot failure hooks to help fix bad boots (Debian bug 468115):
  - debian/tree/lvm2/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-premount/lvm2
- remaining changes to upstream event manager packages (Debian bug 514706):
  - debian/rules:
- enable dmeventd during configure.
  - debian/dmeventd.{8,manpages}: install dmeventd files.
- rename debian/clvm.defaults to debian/clvm.default so it is installed
  correctly.
- debian/control: add dmsetup-udeb to libdevmapper1.02.1-udeb recommends.
- debian/rules: make sure dmsetup and lvm2 initramfs-tools scripts are
executable. When the Ubuntu-specific ones are added with a patch,
they may lose their executable bit.
- Add and install clvmd resource agent
- Add dependency on libudev-dev to libdevmapper-dev so that the .pc file
  works.
- debian/{clvmd.ra,clvm.init}:
  - create /run/lvm if it doesn't exist.
- debian/clvm.init:
  - exit 3 if not running on status action.
- Call dh_installman so that our dmeventd manpage actually gets installed
- Install the missing fsadm manpage.
- Complete libdevmapper-dev multiarch:
  - move .so symlinks and pkgconfig files to multiarched locations.
  - mark libdevmapper-dev M-A: same

  * New changes:
- keep ocf resource directory
- build with only corosync clvmd support

  * Dropped changes:
- debian/tree/dmsetup/lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage-dm.rules:
watch dm devices for changes with inotify. This udev rule is gone.

lvm2 (2.02.98-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * Update init script:
- Use auto-activation.
- Drop manual loading of dm-mod.
  * Fix udev rules:
- Re-add another oversight.

lvm2 (2.02.98-5) unstable; urgency=low

  * Fix udev rules.
- Properly exclude special devices, this part got lost. (closes: #718582)
- Always call udev sync.

lvm2 (2.02.98-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Drop still broken udev stuff. (closes: #712049)
  * Make thin support usable:
- Suggest thin-privisioning-tools.
- Set correct location for thin_check binary.

lvm2 (2.02.98-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Revert udev rules. (closes: #711740)

lvm2 (2.02.98-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Use udev monitor for synchronization.
  * Fix wrong disable in udev rules.

Hi Brooklyn, do you think you can rebase this patch against the Havana
branch? This is not something we'd typically SRU to Grizzly, but since
Havana is still far off release we can apply it there without much
hassle.

This merge pulls in from Debian a handful of fixes to the udev rules
installed by the package. These fix some bad races I've been hitting
around LVM snapshot delete when using OpenStack cinder to manage
volumes, among other races reported elsewhere. The udev changes will
hopefully be SRU'd to raring, as I'm hitting similar issues there.

Below is a list of all Debian changes since last Ubuntu upload. Attached
is a debdiff from lvm2_2.02.98-1ubuntu5 to 2.02.98-6ubuntu1.

lvm2 (2.02.98-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * Update init script:
- Use auto-activation.
- Drop manual loading of dm-mod.
  * Fix udev rules:
- Re-add another oversight.

 -- Bastian Blank Tue, 27 Aug 2013 13:13:17 +0200

lvm2 (2.02.98-5) unstable; urgency=low

- Properly exclude special devices, this part got lost. (closes: #718582)
- Always call udev sync.

 -- Bastian Blank Wed, 07 Aug 2013 15:10:23 +0200

lvm2 (2.02.98-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Drop still broken udev stuff. (closes: #712049)
  * Make thin support usable:
- Suggest thin-privisioning-tools.
- Set correct location for thin_check binary.

 -- Bastian Blank Sun, 14 Jul 2013 16:37:56 +0200

lvm2 (2.02.98-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Revert udev rules. (closes: #711740)

 -- Bastian Blank Sun, 09 Jun 2013 22:08:02 +0200

lvm2 (2.02.98-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Use udev monitor for synchronization.
  * Fix wrong disable in udev rules.

[Bug 1225149] [NEW] Please merge lvm2 (main) 2.02.98-6 from Debian unstable (main)

2013-09-13 Thread Adam Gandelman
Public bug reported:

This merges Debian 2.02.98-6, which contains a number of fixes to udev
rules that seem to fix many strange issue's I've been hitting on Saucy
wrt LVM snapshot deletion. Not sure if this requires a FFe, but I'd be
happy to file if it does.

lvm2 (2.02.98-6ubuntu1) saucy; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable (LP: #1223576), remaining changes:
- Only build clvm support for corosync:
  - debian/control: Drop Build-Depends on libcman-dev, openais-dev
  - debian/rules: Remove openais + cman from --with-clvmd build option.
  - debian/tree/dmsetup/lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage-dm.rules:
watch dm devices for changes with inotify

[Bug 1223576] Re: lvremove always fails on first attempt when removing snapshot

2013-09-13 Thread Adam Gandelman
Testing the changes to udev rules from lvm2 2.02.98-6 on raring 13.04
fixes the intermittent issue there, as well.

[Bug 1223576] Re: lvremove always fails on first attempt when removing snapshot

2013-09-12 Thread Adam Gandelman
This appears to be resolved in Debian using lvm2 2.02.98-6. There have
been a number of updates to the udev rules since our 13.10 version
(2.02.98-1). Syncing these changes out to my test hardware fixes this
issue as well as another total LVM deadlock I started hitting while
testing some new OpenStack patches. I will merge 2.02.98-6, test and
file a FFE.

[Bug 1223576] Re: lvremove always fails on first attempt when removing snapshot

2013-09-11 Thread Adam Gandelman
No, using the same hardware I've tested on Precise, Raring and Saucy.
Precise does not seem to be affected at all, Raring/13.04 seems to be
affected 50% of the time (or every other test cycle), Saucy/13.10 hits
an error on first attempt 100% of the time. Sorry for the confusion.
