[Bug 996791] Re: Xubuntu 12.04 extremely slow login

2012-09-15 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
@Pappy Jack, I am in the exact same situation. Removed ubuntu-desktop
packages as per psychocats' purexubuntu, and suddenly poopies, whereas
before there was no such problem login in to xfce.

At some point I'm going to try out installing unity-greeter to see if it
helps, but there are too many gnome dependencies I don't want. For now,
I'm just using the hack described by Orbital_sFear in this post:

Another workaround: if you don't need or use Tomboy's synchronization

can even read the same note files), AND its hotkey support works with

[Bug 776656] Re: Sflphone does not support Unity-style tray icon

2011-05-04 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
Ok, one step closer to solving the mystery: it seems that sflphone does
not support Unity's new indicator icons. I had sflphone configured to
hide the main window on startup, and, well... it did. But since I
couldn't see the tray icon (or any other indication for that matter), I
couldn't use it.

By turning off hide at startup, I can use it with Unity. Nevertheless,
it would be better to have it in the tray as I'm accustomed to doing.

Everything works as expected on Ubuntu Classic mode, i.e., using
regular Gnome.

2011-05-03 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
Tried it, with no success. My installation was upgraded to Natty from
Maverick, do you think maybe that has something to do with it? I was
previously using the savoirfaire PPA.

I also tried:

* Removing $HOME/.config/sflphone
* Using 0.9.13 from the PPA: I couldn't install it because of dependency
problems (libebook, etc).

I see there's a --gdk-debug commandline option. Should I use it?

[Bug 637845] Re: [maverick] CPU frequency does not scale up unless all cores are in use

2010-11-08 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
I had a similar problem on my Asus U43JC which runs on an Intel i5-450m
(using Ubuntu 10.10). The BIOS would limit my frequence at 1.2GHz, no
matter what cpufreq governor I was using, no matter if on the power cord
or on the battery. To fix this, I added processor.ignore_ppc=1 to the
kernel boot parameters.

To see if you have the same problem, do a:

$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/bios_limit

In my case, anything less than 240 means the workaround is
necessary. To implement it, just add processor.ignore_ppc=1 to the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT paramenter in /etc/default/grub, and then
run:

$ sudo update-grub

Reboot.

[Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-10-31 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
bdkoepke, thank you for your help. With your pointers, I ended up
compiling my own kernel with a new DSDT.hex (unfortunately current
kernels do not support loading DSDT.aml files from initramfs). On idle,
with WiFi off and low screen brightness I can also get roughly 10500 mW,
with an estimated 7 hours of battery life.

Of course, in an ideal world we'd find the appropriate progression of
acpi calls so that a custom DSDT would not be necessary. Even better
would be a true switchable graphics solution, although since Nvidia's
binary driver won't support it, the bottleneck is still getting good 3D
out of nouveau.

I can confirm this. Ekiga 3.2.0 on Jaunty 9.04, minimum of 2 seconds

[Bug 82108] Re: forcedeth changes MAC address after suspend/resume

2007-12-27 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
I have tested Gutsy with the latest Hardy development kernel
(2.6.24-2-generic), and the problem persists as specificed (byte-for-
byte inversion of MAC address). Attached is my lspci. This is from an
Asus M2NPV-VM (MCP51).

[Bug 98999] Re: hangs, windows become unresponsive without noapic

2007-07-26 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
I have Feisty on a Toshiba A75-S206 with the same symptoms: MP-BIOS
bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC at boot, hangs constantly from
1 to 10 minutes after logging in X. I can confirm that adding noapic
to boot options fixes the problem.

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2006-12-08 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
I can confirm Jaime Alemany's solution to the problem. Disabling the
Windows firewall and commenting all IPv6 hosts from /etc/hosts did the
trick.

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2006-10-11 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
This is happening to me *every time* I try to login using XDMCP (from
Cygwin), up to the latest updates on my Edgy box as of this moment.
Edgy was dist-upgraded from Dapper 3 weeks ago. Before the upgrade,
everything worked.

Just to be clear: I can login, but the symptoms after that are much like
described in gosh's previous comment. I get a brown screen for a few
seconds, then a brown screen with a white rectangle on the top-left
corner for up to 2 minutes, and finally the following error message
(where the white rectangle was):

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.

The last error message was:

Activation of org.gnome.SettingsDaemon timed out

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log
in.

After that, I get no menu bars, only the icons on the desktop (with the
background image loaded).

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2006-10-11 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but this problem does not show when I
start a KDE session.

[Bug 51337] Re: kdm blocks in xdmcp without disk activity

2006-10-11 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
I can confirm this. It happens with either gdm or kdm, but only on a
KDE session. I'm running Ubuntu Edgy with the latest updates as of a
few hours ago.

[Bug 63661] Re: Freeze on login to Gnome in Edgy

2006-10-08 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
I have observed this exact same behavior in my Edgy box, but only when
logging in using Xdmcp. I have yet to discover the cause.

[Bug 63661] Re: Freeze on login to Gnome in Edgy

2006-10-08 Thread Adolfo R. Brandes
Also, when I try running System Preferences Font, I get the
following message after about 20 seconds:

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take
effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE)
settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings
manager.

I'm guessing it's related.
