At some point I'm going to try out installing unity-greeter to see if it helps, but there are too many gnome dependencies I don't want. Another workaround: if you don't need or use Tomboy's synchronization features, you can try Gnote. It looks and works exactly the same (it can even read the same note files), AND its hotkey support works with 11.04. Ok, one step closer to solving the mystery: it seems that sflphone does not support Unity's new indicator icons. I had sflphone configured to hide the main window on startup, and, well... it did. But since I couldn't see the tray icon (or any other indication for that matter), I couldn't use it. By turning off hide at startup, I can use it with Unity. Nevertheless, it would be better to have it in the tray as I'm accustomed to doing. I had a similar problem on my Asus U43JC which runs on an Intel i5-450m (using Ubuntu 10.10). The BIOS would limit my frequence at 1.2GHz, no matter what cpufreq governor I was using, no matter if on the power cord or on the battery. To fix this, I added processor.ignore_ppc=1 to the kernel boot parameters. To see if you have the same problem, do a: $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/bios_limit In my case, anything less than 240 means the workaround is necessary. bdkoepke, thank you for your help. With your pointers, I ended up compiling my own kernel with a new DSDT.hex (unfortunately current kernels do not support loading DSDT.aml files from initramfs). On idle, with WiFi off and low screen brightness I can also get roughly 10500 mW, with an estimated 7 hours of battery life. Of course, in an ideal world we'd find the appropriate progression of acpi calls so that a custom DSDT would not be necessary. Apparently cd and dvd drives are now treated like network interfaces: they have their own 75-persistent* udev rule. I have Feisty on a Toshiba A75-S206 with the same symptoms: MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC at boot, hangs constantly from 1 to 10 minutes after logging in X. This is happening to me *every time* I try to login using XDMCP (from Cygwin), up to the latest updates on my Edgy box as of this moment. Edgy was dist-upgraded from Dapper 3 weeks ago. Before the upgrade, everything worked. Just to be clear: I can login, but the symptoms after that are much like described in gosh's previous comment. I get a brown screen for a few seconds, then a brown screen with a white rectangle on the top-left corner for up to 2 minutes, and finally the following error message (where the white rectangle was): There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The last error message was: Activation of org.gnome.SettingsDaemon timed out GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in. Also, when I try running System Preferences Font, I get the following message after about 20 seconds: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.
