[Bug 1858368] [NEW] single-day events on 1st of month show on all days of preceding month
Public bug reported: Single-day events on 1st of month show on all days of preceding month. For example, someone's birthday on April 1 will show up (in the month view) as being a month-long event during all of March. I am using a NextCloud calendar. The events look OK on the NextCloud web-based calendar, on my iphone, and on Mac's Calendar.app. Those same events appear fine in the week view... they are not stretched into the previous month. [Bug 963164] Re: windows sometimes appear invisible in spread
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 88 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/88 I am seeing the same problem. Right now, I have two windows that are invisible, but that react to the mouse hovering over them. I have one pidgin window and one chromium window in this invisible state. I can hover my mouse over the pidgin window and the top bar changes to say Pidgin internet messenger, and I get pop-up status boxes for my buddies. But the actual window is nowhere to be found. When I hover over the chromium window, the cursor changes whenever it thinks it's over a link, and I can click on the links and the browser loads that page. When I alt-tab, the preview of the window shows that it actually did visit the link. But I can not see the actual window in its normal place. I do not know of a work-around to get the window to show up again. I have tried (1) alt-tab to the desktop icon (2) alt-F1 to another virtual console and alt-F7 back (3) use the compiz shortcut key to maximize and unmaximize the window (4) use the compiz shortcut to move/resize the window (5) switch to other desktops using ctrl-alt-arrows (6) switch desktops using the compiz expo key. Interested if others have found a work-around to get the application windows to show up again. Even more interested in a proper fix. [Bug 757814] Re: Static Application Switcher Plugin does not show window titles
I am using gnome, and the compizconfig-settings-manager. The ring switcher and shift switcher do not show the window titles, either, even though the show window title checkbox is clicked. So maybe the problem is somewhere below the actual component that is doing the alt- tab switching, and in a component that is providing window info. That being said, the alt-tab static application switcher in compizconfig-settings-manager *does* show the window titles... but only for non-minimized windows. [Bug 779301] [NEW] evince grabs the mouse
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince Ubuntu Maverick (10.10) system, upgraded to Natty (11.04), evince 2.32, classic gnome desktop. This is hard to explain... when I open a document in evince, and then I pass the mouse over it in any way, it grabs the mouse and goes into a document-scrolling mode. I can not simply pass over the document, for example, trying to go from one side of the screen to the other. Once the mouse enters evince (and it can either be in the left-hand section that shows multiple pages, or in the main area that shows the document), the pointer stays on the same part of the screen, and the document slides around under it. I end up having to use keyboard commands to either alt-tab and make another application get focus, or maybe close the document using crtl-W or alt-F-Q. I thought that it might have had to do with me removing the overlay scrollbars (I removed overlay-scrollbar and liboverlay-scrollbar-0.1-0 and I set LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0). [Bug 714356] Re: update-manager starts gnome-power-manager
When I ran my tests, I did notice that it had a little warning about the fact that I was running on batteries, suggesting that it might be safer to plug in. You suggest removing the power manager. I had considered removing the gnome-power-manager package, but I was under the *mistaken* impression that it would also remove a whole list of other things because of cascading dependencies. I tried again just now, and I see that apt simply removes two packages: gnome-power-manager itself and also ubuntu-desktop, a meta-package that brings in all of the basic GNOME stuff in a single sweep. This is to be expected, since I am removing one of its dependencies. So now I have removed the gnome-power-manager completely with no ill effects. Thanks for the suggestion. Now I have two completely suitable work-arounds (sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/gnome-power-manager and sudo apt-get remove gnome-power-manager). Both of these solutions work for me, because I am on a single-user machine, and so it's OK for me to make my preferences global. However, this bug report is not about fixing my system but about making update-manager work better. So below, I will focus on that. After removing g-p-m completely, I ran update-manager again. I was surprised that it still gave me the it's safer to connect the computer to AC power before updating message. So apparently it is smart enough to figure that out even if gnome-power-manager is not running (or even installed). So the bottom line for this particular bug is that if you have gnome- power-manager INSTALLED but it's not currently running, for whatever reason, update-manager will run it for you. Note that on a multi-user system, it might be perfectly normal for g-p-m to be installed, but started by some users and not started by others. In fact, now I am curious what would happen if a different user (say, my wife) were logged in using a different desktop environment, something besides GNOME. So I am not sure if having update-manager start up g-p-m is what one would expect. In fact, the way that update-manager is currently reporting my own battery/AC state even after I removed the g-p-m package suggests that it might not be entirely necessary to query g-p-m at all. [Bug 707098] [NEW] oom change in 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 causes operation not permitted

This service is a virtuozzo VM. After upgrading to the new 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 package, I could no longer SSH into the VM. I rebooted the machine, and SSH never allowed a connection (connection refused). I found this in my /var/log/syslog. The timestamp corresponds to when I did the upgrade (and I forget whether I manually did a service ssh restart). Jan 23 16:04:23 satu init: ssh main process (32282) terminated with status 255 Jan 23 16:04:23 satu init: Failed to spawn ssh pre-start process: unable to set oom adjustment: Operation not permitted WORK-AROUND I booted the VM in recovery mode, which allows me to directly modify the files on the VM's disk image. I reverted the /etc/init/ssh.conf to the way it was in version 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4 (removing the -D and the oom never and adding back the expect fork). When I rebooted, the machine came up normally and I was able to SSH in again. [Bug 707098] Re: oom change in 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 causes operation not permitted
Looking a little deeper, it looks like OpenSSH has had this oom never line ever since Ubuntu 10.04 came out, and that Virtuozzo containers have had to modify this file all along. I never saw it before because my Virtuozzo provider had a pristine 10.04 image that they deployed -- I assume, with the oom never line commented out. So this was the first time that the package had been upgraded on my system, and it asked me if I wanted to keep my changes or install the package maintainer's version. So maybe this is not so much of a bug in OpenSSH as it is a quirk in Virtuozzo (that I did not know about at the time of upgrade). Not knowing what this oom never option is all about, I can not make that call. [Bug 707098] [NEW] oom change in 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 causes operation not permitted
Public bug reported: WHAT RECENTLY CHANGED Recently, a security update was pushed out for the openssh-server package. The package changes: -openssh-client 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4 -openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4 -openssl 0.9.8k-7ubuntu8.4 +openssh-client 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 +openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 +openssl 0.9.8k-7ubuntu8.5 The upgrade makes a change to the /etc/init/ssh.conf file: $ diff before/etc/init/ssh.conf after/etc/init/ssh.conf 10d9 expect fork 15c14 #oom never --- oom never 27c26 exec /usr/sbin/sshd --- exec /usr/sbin/sshd -D THE PROBLEM I have a virtual machine at Tektonic.net. [Bug 703306] [NEW] close message window on delete and TABS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird Trying out tabs for the first time. I set my preferences / advanced / reading display settings to: - Open messages in: a new tab - Close message window on delete = checked New messages open in a tab. But if I delete a message, its tab stays open and it shows another message from that same mail folder. It's as if the Close message window on delete directive is being ignored when I am using tabs. This is undesirable, because it opens a new message that I did not explicitly ask for (giving me little control over what is being displayed on my screen), and it marks that new message as read. This is exactly the behavior I would expect if Close message window on delete were left UN-CHECKED. If I am viewing messages in a new WINDOW instead, the window closes properly when I delete the message. The work-around is awkward -- I could X out the tab, and then go back to the mail index (which may or may not be focused on the same mailbox where the message resides) and press delete from the index. [Bug 700531] Re: multiweek view is blank after running for some time
I noticed today after leaving the view on week for a long time, the week view became the blank one, and the multi-week one updated properly. So perhaps this bug has more to do with keeping the same view for a long time (like overnight). As a sanity, I plan to remove my entire $HOME/.thunderbird directory and reconfigure from scratch. I am thinking that I might be seeing remnants of an old config directory and an upgrade? It's not just this problem that makes me suspicious... I am seeing Thunderbird lock up frequently at home, but not at work. I am thinking that my config directory at home might have something in it that's causing these problems. Will report back later. [Bug 700531] [NEW] multiweek view is blank after running for some time
Public bug reported: I use Thunderbird/Lightning to access 12 caldav calendars from a server. I usually leave Thunderbird running all of the time. Lately, I have noticed when I go over to the calendar tab (away from the mail tab) that my multi-week calendar shows a blank schedule. The dates are drawn properly, but there are no events shown. I can click on reload remote calendars and it stays blank. But if I change the view to day or week or month, the view is updated properly, showing many events. If I click on the multiweek tab again, the calendar is blank again, no events. Just now, I tried changing the number of weeks in the multiweek view, thinking that it might trigger something to be reloaded. But it did not. I normally view 4 weeks at a time. Changing it to 3 did not make the events show up. The calendar remained blank. Normally, when this happens, I just shut down Thunderbird and restart it. Running on 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. $ apt-cache policy xul-ext-lightning xul-ext-lightning: Installed: 1.0~b2+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 1.0~b2+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu2 Version table: *** 1.0~b2+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Alan Porter ** Affects: lightning-extension (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/700531 Title: multiweek view is blank after running for some time -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 326582] Re: sort order of files listings in nautilus is not alphabetical
A good example of the need to sort alphabetically, and not numerically. I store a lot of bank statements in a folder. They have names like this: 20090215_monthly_statement.pdf 200903_first_quarter_summary.pdf 20090315_monthly_statement.pdf 20090415_monthly_statement.pdf 20090515_monthly_statement.pdf 200906_second_quarter_summary.pdf 20090615_monthly_statement.pdf The current numerically-focused sorting algorithm places the summary statements at the top of the list, followed by all of the monthly statements. It's not what I would have wanted. But I also see that this is a heated issue. So I have found a work-around, which is to insert dashes in the filenames, like this: 2009-02-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-03_first_quarter_summary.pdf 2009-03-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-04-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-05-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-06_second_quarter_summary.pdf 2009-06-15_monthly_statement.pdf These filename are sorted in date order, as one would expect. I also have similar problems with photos, which might live in folders with names like these: 2010-04-25_maker_faire 2010-04_easter 2010-04_new_york 2010-04_spring_outing 2010-05 2010-05-09_mothers_day 2010-05-30_jordan_lake 2010-05_shuttle_launch Again, the dashes do cause the directories to be sorted into proper numerical / alphabetical / date order. Without them, the events that span several days (like the May shuttle launch) appear before the events on a particular day (like Maker Faire in April). I do hope that you guys can come to an agreement without alienating each other. I have the same problem on a new installation of 9.04 (32-bit). If I play some music with audacious, after a while, everything freezes. Well, not EVERYTHING, but a lot of stuff. All of the gnome-terminal windows are solid black with no updates, and the time in the top gnome panel is not being updated. I think gkrellm also freezes. But the mouse work. I installed the run button applet on my top gnome panel so I can click it and do a quick killall audacious. At this point, the log jam clears and everything is back to normal. I noticed that there is another cut/paste bug, #185476: [upstream] OO spreadsheet copies changes from one sheet to another. I don't think this one is related to #185476, since that one has to do with incorrect contents being pasted, and this one has to do with the visual feedback on the multiple sheets. All right... as soon as I entered the bug, I found the culprit (and this has been bugging me all weekend). [Bug 165095] Re: workspace switcher: name OR preview, but not both
A couple of notes: (1) At work, I use Kubuntu. It has a similar applet called pager which allows the names and the previews to be viewed at the same time. Nicely done there. A little bit on the busy looking side, but very usable. (2) Back to GNOME workspace switcher, if you have the workspace names turned on, you lose the ability to drag windows from one workspace to another (because you do not get to see the preview at all). Instead, you have to use the little pull-down menu in the upper left corner of the window. Thanks for looking into this. [Bug 165095] workspace switcher: name OR preview, but not both
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Workspace Switcher v2.20.1 on Ubuntu gutsy (7.10) Bug or feature request... not sure which. I can turn on workspace names in the switcher, but then I lose the preview that is normally there. I use 12 workspaces. With so many, it's hard to remember which one is for which use. Normally, I can see what is running in each workspace, but I can't tell which workspace is which. So I give them names and then choose to display the names. But then the preview goes away and I can not tell if there are open windows in each workspace without really looking for it (listing the windows in the window selector, or visiting each workspace in turn). In fact, without the preview, the entire workspace switcher turns into a big waste of space, just like 12 static buttons. It would be nice if I could see the names as well as the previews. I know that makes the display a little busier. But if I have to give up either names or previews, the switcher's usefulness is diminished quite a lot.
