[Bug 1858368] [NEW] single-day events on 1st of month show on all days of preceding month

2020-01-05 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Single-day events on 1st of month show on all days of preceding month.

For example, someone's birthday on April 1 will show up (in the month
view) as being a month-long event during all of March.

I am using a NextCloud calendar. The events look OK on the NextCloud
web-based calendar, on my iphone, and on Mac's Calendar.app.

Those same events appear fine in the week view... they are not stretched
into the previous month.

[Bug 963164] Re: windows sometimes appear invisible in spread

2012-06-05 Thread Alan Porter
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 88 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/88

I am seeing the same problem. Right now, I have two windows that are
invisible, but that react to the mouse hovering over them. I have one
pidgin window and one chromium window in this invisible state.

I can hover my mouse over the pidgin window and the top bar changes to
say Pidgin internet messenger, and I get pop-up status boxes for my
buddies. But the actual window is nowhere to be found.

When I hover over the chromium window, the cursor changes whenever it
thinks it's over a link, and I can click on the links and the browser
loads that page. When I alt-tab, the preview of the window shows that
it actually did visit the link. But I can not see the actual window in
its normal place.

I do not know of a work-around to get the window to show up again. I
have tried (1) alt-tab to the desktop icon (2) alt-F1 to another virtual
console and alt-F7 back (3) use the compiz shortcut key to maximize and
unmaximize the window (4) use the compiz shortcut to move/resize the
window (5) switch to other desktops using ctrl-alt-arrows (6) switch
desktops using the compiz expo key.

Interested if others have found a work-around to get the application
windows to show up again.

Even more interested in a proper fix.

I am not able to comment further on this bug because the original system
in question has been wiped and reinstalled with a different distro. I
have not seen this symptom on other oneiric-based systems, and I did not
have any other natty-based systems to test this on.

Thanks for checking. Others who saw this same problem should feel free

[Bug 660495] Re: package gallery2 2.3-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-07-24 Thread Alan Porter
Upgraded my server from Lucid to Maverick. Encountered several small errors
during the upgrade of gallery2, and was left with a pretty botched
installation. I ended up installing gallery2 from a tarball, outside of the
normal packaging process.

Details here. I usually run 'do-release-upgrade' from within a 'script'
session -- highly recommended! These lines have line numbers from my
script output log.

5253 Errors were encountered while processing:
5254 apticron (-- my bad)
5255 gallery2

After the bulk of the upgrade was finished, I tried 'dpkg --configure
-a' to see what I could fix with the gallery2 upgrade. Again, same
problem:

5376 Setting up gallery2 (2.3-1ubuntu6) ...
5377 ln: creating symbolic link `/usr/share/gallery2/lib/smarty': No such file

5378 dpkg: error processing gallery2 (--configure):

I saw that I was complaining about /usr/share/gallery2/lib/smarty and
that /usr/share/gallery2 did not exist. So I did a 'mkdir -p
/usr/share/gallery2/lib/smarty' and retried 'dpkg --configure -a'.

I went to my gallery URL, and it showed me a fresh installation setup

I think at this stage, it had basically clobbered the existing
installation with a brand new one.

I did some searching and found others that had this problem
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1535034 and
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/97041), along with some pretty strong-
worded advice:

nivekiam The Ubuntu maintainers apparently don't use, test, install or even
nivekiam know of Gallery but still try to put it into their repository and
screw
nivekiam it up every damn time.
nivekiam
nivekiam apt-get remove gallery2
nivekiam
nivekiam Download and install it manually and you'll never have a problem
nivekiam with Ubuntu repository maintainers screwing up your Gallery install
nivekiam again.

Wow, harsh. But I took his advice.

Remedy: apt-get remove --purge gallery2, restore last night's backup of
the mysql database and the photos directory, install gallery2 from a
tarball from their web site, re-install all of my photos from server,
and don't rely on apt/dpkg to manage gallery2 any more.

[Bug 660495] Re: package gallery2 2.3-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-07-24 Thread Alan Porter
This seems to be two separate issues: (1) the missing files/directories
that needed to be mkdir'ed touched before the upgrade would proceed
(2) the somewhat destructive upgrade that orphaned all of my existing
photos. They may be related, or not. #1 is an annoyance. But #2 is
the one that drives me to install gallery manually, outside of the
packaging process.

[Bug 757814] Re: Static Application Switcher Plugin does not show window titles

2011-05-17 Thread Alan Porter
I am using gnome, and the compizconfig-settings-manager. The ring
switcher and shift switcher do not show the window titles, either,
even though the show window title checkbox is clicked. So maybe the
problem is somewhere below the actual component that is doing the alt-
tab switching, and in a component that is providing window info.

That being said, the alt-tab static application switcher in
compizconfig-settings-manager *does* show the window titles... but only
for non-minimized windows.

These window switchers used to show the window title in 10.10.

[Bug 779301] [NEW] evince grabs the mouse

2011-05-07 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Ubuntu Maverick (10.10) system, upgraded to Natty (11.04), evince 2.32,
classic gnome desktop.

This is hard to explain... when I open a document in evince, and then I
pass the mouse over it in any way, it grabs the mouse and goes into a
document-scrolling mode. I can not simply pass over the document, for
example, trying to go from one side of the screen to the other. Once
the mouse enters evince (and it can either be in the left-hand section
that shows multiple pages, or in the main area that shows the document),
the pointer stays on the same part of the screen, and the document
slides around under it.

I end up having to use keyboard commands to either alt-tab and make
another application get focus, or maybe close the document using crtl-W
or alt-F-Q.

I thought that it might have had to do with me removing the overlay
scrollbars (I removed overlay-scrollbar and liboverlay-scrollbar-0.1-0
and I set LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0). But when I reinstalled the overlay
scrollbars, evince still grabbed the mouse.

I am perplexed. Has anyone else seen this problem?

[Bug 714356] Re: update-manager starts gnome-power-manager

2011-02-27 Thread Alan Porter
No, gnome power manager starts when the gksudo-like password prompt pops
up. It does not happen during the apt-get download phase.

If I do 'apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade' from a shell, gnome
power manager does not start up.

The problem does not seem to be related to the actual upgrading of
packages, but in the presentation of the password prompt.

[Bug 714356] Re: update-manager starts gnome-power-manager

2011-02-27 Thread Alan Porter
When I ran my tests, I did notice that it had a little warning about the
fact that I was running on batteries, suggesting that it might be safer
to plug in.

You suggest removing the power manager. I had considered removing the
gnome-power-manager package, but I was under the *mistaken* impression
that it would also remove a whole list of other things because of
cascading dependencies. I tried again just now, and I see that apt
simply removes two packages: gnome-power-manager itself and also
ubuntu-desktop, a meta-package that brings in all of the basic GNOME
stuff in a single sweep. This is to be expected, since I am removing
one of its dependencies.

So now I have removed the gnome-power-manager completely with no ill
effects. Thanks for the suggestion. Now I have two completely suitable
work-arounds (sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/gnome-power-manager and sudo
apt-get remove gnome-power-manager). Both of these solutions work for
me, because I am on a single-user machine, and so it's OK for me to make
my preferences global.

However, this bug report is not about fixing my system but about
making update-manager work better. So below, I will focus on that.

After removing g-p-m completely, I ran update-manager again. I was
surprised that it still gave me the it's safer to connect the computer
to AC power before updating message. So apparently it is smart enough
to figure that out even if gnome-power-manager is not running (or even
installed).

So the bottom line for this particular bug is that if you have gnome-
power-manager INSTALLED but it's not currently running, for whatever
reason, update-manager will run it for you. Note that on a multi-user
system, it might be perfectly normal for g-p-m to be installed, but
started by some users and not started by others. In fact, now I am
curious what would happen if a different user (say, my wife) were logged
in using a different desktop environment, something besides GNOME.

So I am not sure if having update-manager start up g-p-m is what one
would expect. In fact, the way that update-manager is currently
reporting my own battery/AC state even after I removed the g-p-m package
suggests that it might not be entirely necessary to query g-p-m at all.

When update-manager asks for my password, it also starts up gnome-power-

I have my startup applications set so that gnome-power-manager does
NOT start. I don't like the way it continuously sets my backlight
intensity, over-riding what I have set it to at the moment. However, if
I update my packages, gnome-power-manager starts up anyway. It seems a
little odd that these two are related.

[Bug 707098] Re: oom change in 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 causes operation not permitted

2011-01-26 Thread Alan Porter
Agreed... this looks more like pilot error than anything else.

The update caught be by surprise. I should have known better, though...
if my config file had not been modified by me or my Virtuozzo provider,
then I would not have been asked whether or not I wanted the new change.

In either case, it's nice to have this unexpected (but perfectly
legitimate) behavior documented here, so that others who are having
similar issues will find this report when they do a search.

I am OK with closing this bug report. Thanks for taking the time to
read and explain.

[Bug 707098] [NEW] oom change in 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 causes operation not permitted

2011-01-24 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

WHAT RECENTLY CHANGED

Recently, a security update was pushed out for the openssh-server
package.

The package changes:
-openssh-client 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4
-openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4
-openssl 0.9.8k-7ubuntu8.4
+openssh-client 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5
+openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5
+openssl 0.9.8k-7ubuntu8.5

The upgrade makes a change to the /etc/init/ssh.conf file:

$ diff before/etc/init/ssh.conf after/etc/init/ssh.conf
10d9
 expect fork
15c14
 #oom never
---
 oom never
27c26
 exec /usr/sbin/sshd
---
 exec /usr/sbin/sshd -D

THE PROBLEM

I have a virtual machine at Tektonic.net. This service is a virtuozzo
VM. After upgrading to the new 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 package, I could no
longer SSH into the VM. I rebooted the machine, and SSH never allowed a
connection (connection refused).

I found this in my /var/log/syslog. The timestamp corresponds to when I
did the upgrade (and I forget whether I manually did a service ssh
restart).

Jan 23 16:04:23 satu init: ssh main process (32282) terminated with status 255
Jan 23 16:04:23 satu init: Failed to spawn ssh pre-start process: unable to set
oom adjustment: Operation not
permitted

WORK-AROUND

I booted the VM in recovery mode, which allows me to directly modify
the files on the VM's disk image. I reverted the /etc/init/ssh.conf to
the way it was in version 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4 (removing the -D and the
oom never and adding back the expect fork). When I rebooted, the
machine came up normally and I was able to SSH in again.

SYSTEM INFORMATION

I know that Virtuozzo machines are a little different than normal
machines... they are more like a chroot jail than a normal machine.
And I am not sure if those differences are what caused SSH to not
respond. But I have installed the same upgrade on native machines and
on Xen VM's with no problems.

If you need more information about this Virtuozzo VM, I am happy to
provide details.

[Bug 707098] Re: oom change in 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu5 causes operation not permitted

2011-01-24 Thread Alan Porter
Looking a little deeper, it looks like OpenSSH has had this oom never
line ever since Ubuntu 10.04 came out, and that Virtuozzo containers
have had to modify this file all along. I never saw it before because
my Virtuozzo provider had a pristine 10.04 image that they deployed -- I
assume, with the oom never line commented out. So this was the first
time that the package had been upgraded on my system, and it asked me if
I wanted to keep my changes or install the package maintainer's
version.

So maybe this is not so much of a bug in OpenSSH as it is a quirk in
Virtuozzo (that I did not know about at the time of upgrade). Not
knowing what this oom never option is all about, I can not make that
call.

[Bug 703306] [NEW] close message window on delete and TABS

2011-01-15 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Trying out tabs for the first time.

I set my preferences / advanced / reading display settings to:
 - Open messages in: a new tab
 - Close message window on delete = checked

New messages open in a tab. But if I delete a message, its tab stays
open and it shows another message from that same mail folder. It's as
if the Close message window on delete directive is being ignored when
I am using tabs. This is undesirable, because it opens a new message
that I did not explicitly ask for (giving me little control over what is
being displayed on my screen), and it marks that new message as read.
This is exactly the behavior I would expect if Close message window on
delete were left UN-CHECKED.

If I am viewing messages in a new WINDOW instead, the window closes
properly when I delete the message.

The work-around is awkward -- I could X out the tab, and then go back
to the mail index (which may or may not be focused on the same mailbox
where the message resides) and press delete from the index.

[Bug 700531] Re: multiweek view is blank after running for some time

2011-01-11 Thread Alan Porter
I noticed today after leaving the view on week for a long time, the
week view became the blank one, and the multi-week one updated properly.

So perhaps this bug has more to do with keeping the same view for a long
time (like overnight).

As a sanity, I plan to remove my entire $HOME/.thunderbird directory and
reconfigure from scratch. I am thinking that I might be seeing remnants
of an old config directory and an upgrade? It's not just this problem
that makes me suspicious... I am seeing Thunderbird lock up frequently
at home, but not at work. I am thinking that my config directory at
home might have something in it that's causing these problems. Will
report back later.

[Bug 700531] [NEW] multiweek view is blank after running for some time

2011-01-08 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

I use Thunderbird/Lightning to access 12 caldav calendars from a server.
I usually leave Thunderbird running all of the time. Lately, I have
noticed when I go over to the calendar tab (away from the mail tab) that
my multi-week calendar shows a blank schedule. The dates are drawn
properly, but there are no events shown. I can click on reload remote
calendars and it stays blank. But if I change the view to day or
week or month, the view is updated properly, showing many events.
If I click on the multiweek tab again, the calendar is blank again, no
events.

Just now, I tried changing the number of weeks in the multiweek view,
thinking that it might trigger something to be reloaded. But it did
not. I normally view 4 weeks at a time. Changing it to 3 did not make
the events show up. The calendar remained blank.

Normally, when this happens, I just shut down Thunderbird and restart
it.

Running on 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

[Bug 326582] Re: sort order of files listings in nautilus is not alphabetical

2010-10-04 Thread Alan Porter
A good example of the need to sort alphabetically, and not numerically.

I store a lot of bank statements in a folder. They have names like
this:

20090215_monthly_statement.pdf
200903_first_quarter_summary.pdf
20090315_monthly_statement.pdf
20090415_monthly_statement.pdf
20090515_monthly_statement.pdf
200906_second_quarter_summary.pdf
20090615_monthly_statement.pdf

The current numerically-focused sorting algorithm places the summary
statements at the top of the list, followed by all of the monthly
statements.

It's not what I would have wanted. But I also see that this is a heated
issue. So I have found a work-around, which is to insert dashes in the
filenames, like this:

2009-02-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-03_first_quarter_summary.pdf
2009-03-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-04-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-05-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-06_second_quarter_summary.pdf
2009-06-15_monthly_statement.pdf

These filename are sorted in date order, as one would expect.

I also have similar problems with photos, which might live in folders
with names like these:

2010-04-25_maker_faire
2010-04_easter
2010-04_new_york
2010-04_spring_outing
2010-05
2010-05-09_mothers_day
2010-05-30_jordan_lake
2010-05_shuttle_launch

Again, the dashes do cause the directories to be sorted into proper
numerical / alphabetical / date order. Without them, the events that
span several days (like the May shuttle launch) appear before the events
on a particular day (like Maker Faire in April).

I do hope that you guys can come to an agreement without alienating each
other.

[Bug 556106] [NEW] lucid beta1 liveUSB does not complete boot, console says no medium found

2010-04-05 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kernel-package

Sorry I can't use the automatic bug reporting processes... I can't boot
into Ubuntu at all.

Booting Lucid Beta 1 LiveUSB (created from a Jaunty system using new
ISO).

The boot process goes OK until I see the five red/white dots. They
cycle for a long time, and never get any further. If I CTRL-ALT-F1 to
see the console, it shows the following line repeated 8 times:

/init: line 7: can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found

And then it says stdin: I/O error -- that line might have been me,
trying to get a console

The laptop is an HP zx5000 with 768MB of RAM. The LiveUSB stick did
boot OK on another Pentium4-based machine that I have.

OK, apparently all I have to do is file a bug and it starts working
again.

Actually, I rebooted and tried the extra options: acpi=off, noapic and
nodma (also took out splash and quiet) and it booted up just fine.
I just about jumped out of my seat when the startup sound played, as I
was expecting it to hang again.

[Bug 373264] Re: [i855] intel 855 (GME) fails to set proper resolution in Jaunty when BIOS Video expansion is off

2010-02-03 Thread Alan Porter
This post saved my skin!

Thanks for noticing that the video expansion setting would make this
work. I just upgraded my wife's Dell D505, and it was set to show a
smaller-and-crisper boot-up screen (video expansion = off). If she had
seen the screen in that funky interlaced / overlapped / folded mode, I
would've been in trouble, for sure. She might've made me buy her a
Macbook!

Meanwhile, problem solved. I am happy that she can run jaunty on her
lappie.

[Bug 493607] Re: rkhunter reports openssl and sshd versions out of date

2009-12-10 Thread Alan Porter
About the colons, look in /var/log/rkhunter, and it'll tell you exactly
what to whitelist. For named, I had to use named:9.4.2.

Still, it seems silly that I have to whitelist apps that are in Ubuntu
because of a root-kit checker that is in Ubuntu. I would have hoped
that the distro would be more internally consistent.

As it stands, I have spent a little time this morning to make sure that
I do not get a bunch of false-positive emails from all of my servers.
Those got old very quickly.

[Bug 387970] Re: cups asks for root password

2009-07-09 Thread Alan Porter
Woah... this is weird.

I have a Jaunty (9.04) machine. I tried upgrading it to Karmic (9.10),
and I got THIS in the middle of my upgrade:

Setting up cups-pdf (2.5.0-4) ...
 * Reloading Common Unix Printing System: cupsd[fail]
Password for root on localhost?

Wow... an interactive password prompt during apt-get dist-upgrade!!

Sounds like a closely related issue.

[Bug 376168] Re: Annoying freeze of some apps (gnome-terminal, xchat, audacious..)

2009-06-30 Thread Alan Porter
I have the same problem on a new installation of 9.04 (32-bit). It
seems to happen more often when audacity is playing, and so I initially
tried to file a bug under that app.

Typically, I'll be at work, with several gnome-terminal windows open and
several firefox windows. If I play some music with audacious, after a
while, everything freezes. Well, not EVERYTHING, but a lot of stuff.
All of the gnome-terminal windows are solid black with no updates, and
the time in the top gnome panel is not being updated. I think gkrellm
also freezes. But the mouse work. I installed the run button applet
on my top gnome panel so I can click it and do a quick killall
audacious. At this point, the log jam clears and everything is back to
normal.

Very annoying behavior, but glad to have found a work-around.

[Bug 390722] Re: pidgin gets stuck on startup, EAGAIN

2009-06-22 Thread Alan Porter
This appears to be a problem caused by a Yahoo!, fixed by pidgin
upstream, but not yet propagated by the Ubuntu release team.

Apparently, Yahoo changed their protocol to use new authentication
methods. Pidgin has been updated (see notes about v2.5.7 in
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog). But Ubuntu has not picked
up this change. I am not sure, but I think it may be a policy decision,
Since this is not a security vulnerability, it does not get fixed for
jaunty?

See http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog for notes, and see
http://www.pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/ for directions on installing
v2.5.7 from the developers' private PPA.

[Bug 377455] [NEW] copied cells are highlighted in all sheets, not just copied-from sheet

2009-05-16 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

This is a cosmetic bug.

I have a spreadsheet with two sheets (in my case, it's the bank accounts
of my two children). I can highlight some cells in sheet1 and press
ctrl-c to copy. After the copy, there is a highlighted box drawn
around the cells that were just copied. On my particular theme, it is a
bright blue line. All of this is as expected.

When I move to sheet2 to paste, I see that the same range of cells that
was highlighted on sheet1 are also highlighted on sheet2 as well. These
cells should not be highlighted on sheet2... they should only be
highlighted on the copied-from sheet (sheet1).

I did not see any incorrect values or misbehaving copy behavior. I only
saw this cosmetic bug related to the highlight after copying.

[Bug 377455] Re: copied cells are highlighted in all sheets, not just copied-from sheet

2009-05-16 Thread Alan Porter
I noticed that there is another cut/paste bug, #185476: [upstream] OO
spreadsheet copies changes from one sheet to another.

I don't think this one is related to #185476, since that one has to do
with incorrect contents being pasted, and this one has to do with the
visual feedback on the multiple sheets.

My spreadsheet is saved in native ODS format.

[Bug 353117] Re: package ubuntu-docs 9.04.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-04-01 Thread Alan Porter
As a work-around, edit line 21 of /var/lib/dpkg/info/ubuntu-
docs.postinst and put the version number at the end in quotes. That is,
change

dpkg --compare-versions $2 lt-nl 9.04.6

to

dpkg --compare-versions $2 lt-nl 9.04.6

After you're done, re-do apt-get install ubuntu-docs.
This will allow the package to install cleanly.

[Bug 349632] [NEW] drag icon to desktop - sometimes works, sometimes not

2009-03-27 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I like to save bookmarks to shortcut files on my desktop. Usually, I
can drag the icon from the left of the address bar to my desktop, and it
will create a link on the desktop that points to that URL. Sometimes
this works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Example URL's that DO work:
http://lwn.net/Articles/320446/
http://sillyliquifytrick.blogspot.com/2008/12/how-about-that.html

Example URL's that DO NOT work:
http://lifehacker.com/5113886/top-10-ways-to-lock-down-your-data
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/asus-eee-pc-1000he.aspx

When I drag these icons to the desktop, I get a pop-up box that says:
Error while copying.
There was an error getting information
about asus-eee-pc-1000he.aspx.
v Show more details
HTTP Error: Message Corrupt

I have not determined a pattern to when it will work and when it will not.

[Bug 258611] Re: Korganizer: Terrible delay in mouse action on calendar

2008-11-08 Thread Alan Porter
I can confirm the extremely slow performance using the calendar. I
usually have about 10 resources (calendars: one for personal, one for
work, one for kids, etc) open. When I turn one on or off, it takes a
full 5 seconds to redraw the screen. It takes 4.5 seconds to go from
one month to the next. 2.4 GHz P4, ATI graphics, no fancy effects.
During the delay, the CPU is 100%. This stuff used to run lightning
fast on Hardy.

[Bug 210095] Re: NM doesn't pass hostname to DHCP server

2008-09-08 Thread Alan Porter
I can confirm the behavior described above. Intrepid-5

ifup/ifdown uses the settings in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf.
NetworkManager does not.

Workaround:
ln -s dhcp3/dhclient.conf /etc/dhclient-wlan0.conf
ln -s dhcp3/dhclient.conf /etc/dhclient-eth0.conf

Under edit connections, connection-name, IPv4 settings,
leave DHCP Client ID empty. Otherwise, it will send this string
as the DHCP Client Identifier, and it will not send a hostname.

[Bug 250311] Re: packages.ubuntu.com search always returns the same results

2008-07-20 Thread Alan Porter
All right... as soon as I entered the bug, I found the culprit (and this
has been bugging me all weekend). I had the noscript plugin
installed, so when I pressed [search], it looked for the text that was
in the text box, which was set to search. Apparently, with NoScript
turned on, it kept the default text in that text box. And so all of my
results had the word search in them.

Groan.

Close this one, please.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that I am at work, and

[Bug 165095] Re: workspace switcher: name OR preview, but not both

2008-05-08 Thread Alan Porter
I'm not sure if 115237 is talking about adding workspace names to the
desktop itself, or to the little preview area in the desktop switcher.
My request was the latter. I just want to make sure that the bug
reports do not get combined and then the subtle distinction gets
inadvertently lost.

Also attaching a picture of the kubuntu desktop switcher in action,
showing several windows open in several desktops, with desktop names and
application windows clearly visible.

[Bug 221056] [NEW] bash [[ $x =~ regexp ]] correctness

2008-04-23 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

I was testing some bash scripts that had the [[ $var =~ regexp ]]
notation. It turns out that this function is new in bash 3.0, and we
had some systems that run bash 2.0. In the process of testing, I
noticed some weird results.

On a CentOS based system that uses bash 2.0, we get a syntax error, as
expected, because the =~ operator was introduced in bash 3.0. On a more
recent CentOS system with bash 3.0, we see that the operator works as
expected. On my Ubuntu 8.04 (beta) desktop running bash 3.2.33(1),
however, the regexp matching returned the opposite answer than what I
had seen in bash 3.0.

Here is my test.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat x
#!/bin/bash
echo This is bash version $BASH_VERSION
module=ahci_hcd
if [[ $module =~ .hci[_-]hcd ]]; then
   echo yes
else
   echo no
fi
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

And here are my results...

On CentOS 3.something... returns an error as expected.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# ./x
 This is bash version 2.05b.0(1)-release
./x: line 5: conditional binary operator expected
./x: line 5: syntax error near `=~'
./x: line 5: `if [[ $module =~ .hci[_-]hcd ]]; then'
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]#

On CentOS 4.5... returns a correct answer, as expected.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# ./x
 This is bash version 3.00.15(1)-release
yes
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]#

On Ubuntu 8.10 (beta)... returns the OPPOSITE answer!
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ./x
 This is bash version 3.2.33(1)-release
no
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

I would expect the answer from bash 3.00.15(1) and bash 3.2.33(1) to agree.

[Bug 213481] [NEW] transparent pull-downs

2008-04-07 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Running FF3, looking at a Rational ClearQuest (bug tracking tool) web

[Bug 165251] 'script' dies on SIGWINCH (window resize)

2007-11-26 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: util-linux

The 'script' command (/usr/bin/script, part of bsdutils package) dies
when it receives the SIGWINCH signal.

Open an xterm (I use 'konsole'). Start a 'script' session, which saves
all screen output to a file. Then resize the terminal window. The
'script' session dies immediately and the output file is closed.

When I first Googled around, I saw this posting:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg00768.html

This sounds like it might have been fixed upstream?

[Bug 165095] Re: workspace switcher: name OR preview, but not both

2007-11-26 Thread Alan Porter
I tried the fancy new visual effects briefly, but then disabled it that
same day because it seemed to be unstable on my laptop's video card.
Since then, I have been running plain Jane GNOME with no advanced visual
effects.

[Bug 165095] Re: workspace switcher: name OR preview, but not both

2007-11-26 Thread Alan Porter
A couple of notes:

(1) At work, I use Kubuntu. It has a similar applet called pager
which allows the names and the previews to be viewed at the same time.
Nicely done there. A little bit on the busy looking side, but very
usable.

(2) Back to GNOME workspace switcher, if you have the workspace names
turned on, you lose the ability to drag windows from one workspace to
another (because you do not get to see the preview at all). Instead,
you have to use the little pull-down menu in the upper left corner of
the window.

Thanks for looking into this.

[Bug 165095] workspace switcher: name OR preview, but not both

2007-11-25 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Workspace Switcher v2.20.1 on Ubuntu gutsy (7.10)

Bug or feature request... not sure which.

I can turn on workspace names in the switcher, but then I lose the
preview that is normally there.

I use 12 workspaces. With so many, it's hard to remember which one is
for which use. Normally, I can see what is running in each workspace,
but I can't tell which workspace is which. So I give them names and
then choose to display the names. But then the preview goes away and I
can not tell if there are open windows in each workspace without really
looking for it (listing the windows in the window selector, or visiting
each workspace in turn). In fact, without the preview, the entire
workspace switcher turns into a big waste of space, just like 12 static
buttons.

It would be nice if I could see the names as well as the previews. I
know that makes the display a little busier. But if I have to give up
either names or previews, the switcher's usefulness is diminished quite
a lot.

[Bug 154771] possible solution?

2007-10-24 Thread Alan Porter

I had the same problem. I started with 7.04, upgraded in early October, then
kept getting bugged about upgrading every day.

In what seemed to be an unrelated error, I also noticed that I was
getting the following error message when I did a sudo apt-get update:

Fetched 81.7kB in 0s (259kB/s)
Reading package lists... Done
W: GPG error: http://security.ubuntu.com gutsy-security Release: The following

W: GPG error: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy-updates Release: The following
signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic
Signing Key [EMAIL PROTECTED]
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

So I googled around a bit to find a solution to this problem and found
this solution:

# Retrieve the ubuntu key with wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net, store it in my keyring
gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 437D05B5
# Add the retrieved key along with other existing keys
sudo apt-key add ~/.gnupg/pubring.gpg
# apt-get update without cache to force the use of the newly added key
sudo apt-get update -o Acquire::http::No-Cache=True

In my case, I had to change the ownership of ~/.gnupg/trustdb.gpg from
root to myself. But the key import worked fine and this fixed the bad
apt-get key problem. When I did another sudo apt-get update and sudo
apt-get dist-upgrade, suddenly it found more updates:

Notice that several adept changes are included above.

I am still installing these changes right now, so I can not verify that
this fixes the update-daily problem, but it is consistent with what
others are seeing: you keep getting pestered until adept is updated --
and something is holding adept back. In my case, it looked like it was
the keys.

[Bug 52870] new modules for linux-image-2.6.15-26-686

2006-07-13 Thread Alan Porter
Public bug reported:

On 7/12/2006, linux-image-686 was upgraded to linux-image-2.6.15-26-686,

player-kernel-modules-2.6.15-25.

So after booting into the new version of the kernel, vmmon and vmnet do
not load, and you can not run vmware-player.
