I think I've found the problem: the latin keyboard, upon which the it layout is
defined, has this definition of the j letter:

So i created a .Xmodmaprc file in this way:

Actual behavior seems worse than with FF2.

in the components directory I saw nothing regarding libenigmime.
As a workaround a deinstalled the enigmail package, unregistered the
component from thunderbird, downloaded the XPI from
http://enigmail.mozdev.org/download/index.php and installed it by hand

When editing an url on the addressbar I'm unable to use the usual key
combination as:
- ctrl-backspace to delete the last word
- ctrl-rightarrow and ctrl-leftarrow to skip between words

Hello Sitsofe,
I could make a test only now because I upgraded the cpu to an Athlon 4600+
(linux! Because reboot are for hw upgrades! ;)), and I booted also with latest
kernel 2.6.20-16-generic.
The machine did not lock up, so I suppose the latest kernel solves the
problem...

I recently upgraded my Athlon64 motherboard to 4Gb of ram and the system locked
some seconds after the login screen.
After a bit of research I discovered that the culprit is powernowd, and
uninstalling it solved the problem.
I'm still using the 32bit version of kubuntu
Exact M/B model is Abit KN9 Ultra, CPU is Athlon64 3800+

If I edit a text file with vim and I type accented letters it appears strange
symbols instead of them.
Accented letters in the console works fine.
