[Bug 912864] [NEW] pidgin crashes when closing conversation window after using indicator messages applet

2012-01-06 Thread Alex Shulgin
Public bug reported:

The following sequence reproduces the crash on my Oeneric desktop
installation every time:

1. When a new message arrives to pidgin in Unity desktop, the indicator
messages applet will display highlighted mail envelope icon.
2. If I click on the icon, there would be a menu item showing the contact name.
3. Clicking on the contact name brings up the new conversation window with the
contact.
4. If after that I close the conversation window (by hitting Escape key), the
window will show gray background and sit there for a while.

The pidgin will crash afterwards at random places.

[Bug 870933] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in nux::WindowThread::IsInsideLayoutCycle()

2011-11-30 Thread Alex Shulgin
crashed after unity --reset, which I tried after observing that
compiz had been using 25-30% of a cpu for two days at idle

Same here.

I'm using indicator-multiload applet and on both Unity and Unity2d
either compiz or unity-2d-panel process accumulate memory leaks and grow
CPU consumption over time. With Unity2d it's as simple as killall
unity-2d-panel, and you may have another two days w/o noticing.

Tried killall compiz now, and it crashed like this.

[Bug 803541] [NEW] Xorg freezes sometimes after display went to sleep

2011-06-29 Thread Alex Shulgin
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Maverick to Natty (clean install, not a dist-
upgrade) I've noticed that every few days my laptop's X screen stops
updating.

This happens when system is left idle for certain period of time, like
20 minutes.

So I turned off the screensaver, but this didn't help. I have a power
management setting to put display to sleep after 15 minutes, which I am
now turning off (setting to 'Never') to see if that helps.

When the bug occurs: I would get back to my laptop and find it's screen
blank (which is expected after a while being idle,) hit a key to wake it
up and get back to where I've left. However, the screen is not updating
anymore: e.g. gnome-terminal cursor doesn't blink, cpu load graph applet
doesn't tick, etc. If I move the mouse, it will update the cursor
position and shape (e.g. turn to beam cursor when over text input area,
and back to arrow then leaving the area.) If I try to click at any
point or type something on the keyboard, nothing seems to happen. A gdm
restart helps to regain X w/o rebooting the system. I've looked up X,
kernel and gdm logs but didn't seem to find any clues.

This doesn't happen every time I wake the laptop--not even every day,
but sometimes it happens 2 or 3 times a day. The laptop is running on
AC power most of the time, and every time the problem occurred it was
plugged into wall charger.

I've been running Ubuntu since version 8.10 on this same machine and
never experienced this bug before Natty.

[Bug 802732] [NEW] Pidgin crashes randomly

2011-06-27 Thread Alex Shulgin
Public bug reported:

From time to time pidgin crashes (i.e. all windows disappear and the
process is no longer running.)

This happens more often when I close conversation window using Escape
key (not immediately, sometimes there's an empty gray window left for a
few seconds.) Today it crashed after I've typed another message into
the chat window, after 10-20 seconds of apparent UI hangup. The message
never made it to the chat server.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04
Package: pidgin 1:2.7.11-1ubuntu2
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2

[Bug 696841] Re: vlc stops playing audio after pause/resume or seek

2011-01-06 Thread Alex Shulgin
Here's a sample of running with `-vv' on the file from this URL:
http://www.openbsd.org/songs/song44.ogg

The effects are the same for mp3 or video files: stops playing audio
after a resume. SpaceBar denotes me pressing space bar to pause, then
to resume playback.

$ vlc song44\ -\ Trial\ of\ the\ BSD\ Knights.ogg -vv

[Bug 696841] [NEW] vlc stops playing audio after pause/resume or seek

2011-01-03 Thread Alex Shulgin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

Audio output blocks after pausing and then resuming playback. It also
blocks after seeking (forward or backward) through the stream.

If I change the audio track, it starts playing audio again. This
happens on every video/audio file I've tried. Starts to happen after
dist-upgrade to maverick.

For the record: I've upgraded from karmic to lucid and switched from

Sorry, somehow I missed this link.

It seems, there's really some problem on PA shutdown (near the end of the log):
http://paste.ubuntu.com/344935/

D: alsa-sink.c: Read hardware volume: 0: 8% 1: 8%

sink:alsa_output.pci-_00_1b.0.analog-stereo.
I: main.c: Got signal SIGTERM.
I: main.c: Exiting.
...

So, basically something resets hardware volume to 1% during system
shutdown. Though, the volume was read correctly as 53% on PA start
(line 870).

Here's also paste from alsa-info.sh: http://pastebin.ca/1724126
It might be not very useful as the problem is happening on shutdown
and I ran it just from XFCE session.

2009-12-10 Thread Alex Shulgin
Hi, seems like one of the recent pulseaudio updates from ubuntu-audio-
dev PPA fixed the problem for me.

Sorry, it was premature. After restart, the problem is still here.

That time I saw volume not reset to zero after restart was the time I
was forced to cold-reset the machine, so it ultimately must be some
shutdown script which is zeroing the volume level.

Hey, I've just removed gnome-screensaver and installed xscreensaver

Can it be something is broken on some lower level?

I've re-logged in, checked that xscreensaver process is running,
adjusted settings to activate after 1 minute of idle time--and it didn't
work, just like before. Still it can be activated with Ctrl+Alt+Del
three finger salute.

On an aside note, couldn't we patch gnome-screensaver to fallback to
earlier behaviour if it sees that gnome-session isn't running?

[Bug 445236] [NEW] thunar hangs when opening large USB vfat drives

2009-10-07 Thread Alex Shulgin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunar

Opening vfat drives in thunar (for the first time after the mount) takes
significant time, proportional to drive's size: approx. 3 minutes for
320G drive. The file browser displays nothing and just 'hangs' with the
status 'Loading folder contents...'.

The problem is caused by the call to statfs which makes the whole disk
scan in the absence of 'usefree' option to mount. The same problem also
affects nautilus.

For my setup, I've just edited fstab entries for my external drives.
However, plugging in large USB sticks still happens with delay
(tolerable).

This problem was reported and fixed back in 2007, see e.g. #133567

Now, it might be unwise to add 'usefree' by default when mounting vfat
drives. How about adding a special option to 'Removable drives and
media' below the 'Mount removable media then inserted'?

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64

terminal for a few hours. I've used these apps for the last few hours,
overall machine uptime was around 23 hours.

I'm on jaunty (upgraded from intrepid) with xorg-1:7.4~5ubuntu18. This
never happened to me on this machine before.

Attaching xorg and gdm logs with crash dump.
