Bryce, thanks. Not much success so far. The xorg packages in the PPA are outdated because of a recent update to Oneiric, but I installed manually. When booting with those packages, I couldn't move my mouse pointer in LDM (in fact the system probably hung as changing to a VT didn't work either).
