[Bug 1926598] Re: gnome-shell ram usage

2021-05-03 Thread Amr Ibrahim
I think I know the reason for the high memory usage, it's the Ubuntu
font. Try to change the fonts in gnome-tweaks → Fonts. Change the
Interface Text, Document Text and Legacy Window Titles to Sans Regular
and Sans Bold, respectively. This is the default sans font.

I didn't try to pinpoint which option exactly affects the shell.

I can easily confirm that gnome-shell 3.36 in Ubuntu 20.04 uses 2x more
memory than gnome-shell 3.38 in Debian testing.

Upstream Speex moved to GitLab (links updated in the description). The
Debian maintainer probably abandoned this package. I suggest that the
package moves under the maintainership of the Debian Multimedia Team.

Slack, the communication platform, is not packaged in Ubuntu. This slack
package is a different software. You were trying to install it, and it
conflicted with the already installed slack-desktop.

[Bug 1916570] Re: BlueZ 5.56 release

2021-02-23 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Just a comment on the packaging: the Ubuntu packaging is a bit old: it
still build-depends on debhelper (>= 9), autotools-dev and libdbus-
glib-1-dev (which is deprecated and the Debian package replaced it with
libdbus-1-dev (>= 1.6)), and it is at Standards-Version: 3.9.6, which is
ancient by now.

I suggest merging with Debian first then updating to 5.56 to benefit
from the up-to-date best practices in Debian packaging.

[Bug 1831039] Re: When using Wayland, the onscreen keyboard does not open in text inputs for non-GTK applications such as Firefox or Chrome

Firefox uses GTK, but in a Wayland session it runs on XWayland, the same
for Qt apps and Chrome, they run on XWayland in a Wayland session.

[Bug 1914103] [NEW] On-screen keyboard (OSK) does not appear in Firefox nor Qt apps in Wayland

2021-02-01 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Public bug reported:

The on-screen keyboard (OSK) does not appear in Firefox nor Qt apps
under Wayland. I assume that it does not work in XWayland apps.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

0. Turn on the assistive OSK from Settings
1. Select a text field in a webpage in Firefox → No OSK
2. Select a text field in a Qt app (e.g. Goldendict) → No OSK

This bug does not exist in X11.

[Bug 1903764] Re: [SRU] Update gnome-shell to 3.36.7 in Focal

2020-12-16 Thread Amr Ibrahim
I meant that my reply to comment #3 that those broken extensions should
not be considered as regressions with gnome-shell 3.36.7 because they
are already broken from the beginning.

All of those extensions are already up-to-date upstream and in Debian.
It’s that Ubuntu is always ahead of Debian in GNOME releases when an
Ubuntu release is about to happen and the Debian sync freeze is in
effect. I explained that here: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/scope-of-
gnome-mru/18041/24?u=amr-ibrahim

[Bug 1903764] Re: [SRU] Update gnome-shell to 3.36.7 in Focal

2020-12-15 Thread Amr Ibrahim
The gse list contains some extensions that have already been broken
since Focal release in April 2020. Theses are the ones that I know:

gnome-shell-extension-weather → LP: #1873661, LP: #1835706

gnome-shell-extension-onboard → got removed in Debian on 2020-01-09
because of incompatibility with recent versions of gnome-shell
(https://tracker.debian.org/news/1092762/accepted-onboard-141-5-source-
into-unstable/)

gnome-shell-extension-multi-monitors → LP: #1873789

gnome-shell-extension-gsconnect(-browsers) → very broken, only supports
GNOME 3.30, Ubuntu-specific, hasn't been updated since 2019-01-08

[Bug 1906684] [NEW] [SRU] libreoffice 6.4.7 for Focal

2020-12-03 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

* LibreOffice 6.4.7 is in its seventh bug-fix release of the 6.4 branch.
Version 6.4.6 is currently in focal.

For a list of fixed bugs compared to 6.4.6 see the list of bugs fixed in the
two release candidates:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/6.4.7/RC1
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/6.4.7/RC2
(that's a total of 72 bugs)

* Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU a
minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

[Test Case]

* No specific test case, bugs fixed upstream hopefully come with
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
upstream (both in an automated manner and manually) by a community of
testers. Each minor release normally goes through two release
candidates.

* The libreoffice packages include autopkgtests, those should be run and
verified to pass.

* General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite
should be carried out.

[Regression Potential]

* A minor release with a total of 72 bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bug-fix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
features were removed.

* A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as described
above should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked
in.

[Bug 1905084] Re: Multi-monitor settings are lost when switching between single- and extended-display modes using the keyboard (Super+P) or in gnome-control-center

2020-11-27 Thread Amr Ibrahim
** Description changed:

+ Bug summary:
+
+ I set up and save the two configurations separately in gnome-control-
+ center for single- and extended-display modes, but they are not applied
+ when switching modes with Super+P (or with the dedicated key) or when
+ switching modes in gnome-control-center, the settings don't persist.
+
+ The settings are saved in ~/.config/monitors.xml when setting up and
+ saving the configuration in gnome-control-center, but they are not
+ applied when switching with Super+P or when switching modes in gnome-
+ control-center, the settings don't persist.
+
+ Another way to see the bug is to save a mode configuration in gnome-
+ control-center then switch to the same mode using Super+P by pressing
+ Super+P many times without selecting a different mode, the settings will
+ be lost. See the attached screencast.
+
+
  Steps to reproduce:

  0. Attach an external monitor to the laptop

- 1. Set the external monitor as the primary monitor
-
- 2. Change the fractional scaling of the external monitor to 150% and
+ 1. Change the fractional scaling of the external monitor to 150% and
change the positioning of the built-in monitor to the desired
  positioning

- 3. Switch to the single-display mode using the keyboard
+ 2. Switch to the single-display mode using the keyboard or in gnome-
+ control-center

- → 4. The fractional scaling of the external monitor changes to 100%
+ 3. The fractional scaling of the external monitor changes to 100% →
(this could be the intended behaviour and not a bug)

- 5. Change again the fractional scaling of the external monitor to 150%
+ 4. Change again the fractional scaling of the external monitor to 150%

- 6. Switch to the extended-display mode using the keyboard
+ 5. Switch to the extended-display mode using the keyboard or in gnome-
+ control-center

- → 7. The fractional scaling of the external monitor changes to 100%
- (this is a bug, it should persist)
+ 6. The fractional scaling of the external monitor changes to 100% →
+ (this is a bug, it should persist from step 1 or 4)

- → 8. The positioning of the built-in monitor changes to the default
- (this is a bug, it should persist)
+ 7. The positioning of the built-in monitor changes to the default →
+ (this is a bug, it should persist from step 1)
+
+
+ What happened:
+
+ Multi-monitor settings are lost when switching between single- and

[Bug 1905084] Re: Fractional scaling of external monitor and monitor positioning are lost when switching between single- and extended-display modes using the keyboard

2020-11-24 Thread Amr Ibrahim
I set up and save the two configurations separately in gnome-control-
center, but they are not applied when switching modes with Super+P (or
with the dedicated key) or when switching modes in gnome-control-center,
the settings don't persist.

The settings are saved in ~/.config/monitors.xml when setting up and
saving the configuration in gnome-control-center, but they are not
applied when switching with Super+P or when switching modes in gnome-
control-center, the settings don't persist.

Another way to see the bug is to save a mode configuration in gnome-
control-center then switch to the same mode using Super+P by pressing
Super+P many times without selecting a different mode, the settings will
be lost. See the attached screencast.

[Bug 1905084] [NEW] Fractional scaling of external monitor and monitor positioning are lost when switching between single- and extended-display modes using the keyboard

2020-11-20 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

0. Attach an external monitor to the laptop

1. Set the external monitor as the primary monitor

2. Change the fractional scaling of the external monitor to 150% and
change the positioning of the built-in monitor to the desired
positioning

3. Switch to the single-display mode using the keyboard

→ 4. The fractional scaling of the external monitor changes to 100%
(this could be the intended behaviour and not a bug)

5. Change again the fractional scaling of the external monitor to 150%

6. Switch to the extended-display mode using the keyboard

→ 7. The fractional scaling of the external monitor changes to 100%
(this is a bug, it should persist)

→ 8. The positioning of the built-in monitor changes to the default
(this is a bug, it should persist)

[Bug 1879917] Re: [SRU] Update gnome-clocks to 3.36.2

2020-11-06 Thread Amr Ibrahim
I have been using gnome-clocks 3.36.2-1~ubuntu20.04.1 for quite some
time now and all the functions work well, adding world clocks, alarm,
stopwatch and timer. Gnome shell shows the world clocks just fine after
adding them to gnome-clocks.

I confirm that the timer start button is now enabled after entering
minutes and/or seconds via keyboard or clicking on the plus and minus
buttons.

I confirm that the stopwatch view is scrollable after adding many laps
and it can be scrolled to the bottom. Also clearing the stopwatch view
is smooth now.

[Bug 1879917] Re: [SRU] Update gnome-clocks to 3.36.2

2020-10-14 Thread Amr Ibrahim
According to the Debian maintainer, the new build-dependencies are needed to
check the formatting of the files. That change was applied in 3.36.2 and
forward in Debian and Ubuntu, so it was a packaging oversight in 3.36.0.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1898904 ***

I have a kind request, if the bug does not affect the upstream project,
instead of marking it as invalid, please change the affected package to
the Ubuntu one, or duplicate the bug report to another that affects the
Ubuntu package, otherwise the Ubuntu maintainers will not know about the
bug, and duplicating identical bug reports increases their heat hence
importance.

[Bug 1898411] Re: Crash when adding "south pole" time to world clock

2020-10-14 Thread Amr Ibrahim
You can just download and install the .deb package from the PPA without
adding the PPA to your system (because the PPA might have other unwanted
packages).

Like this package for example:

[Bug 1879917] Re: [SRU] Update gnome-clocks to 3.36.2

2020-10-11 Thread Amr Ibrahim
I updated the regression analysis. Please review again.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

  gnome-clocks 3.36.2 is a bug-fix release as part of GNOME 3.36.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-clocks/-/blob/gnome-3-36/NEWS.md

+ It fixes two crashes related to handling world clocks, fixes the timer
+ start button, fixes spamming the log with criticals, and fixes the
+ stopwatch view not being scrollable to the bottom.
+
  World: Handle impossible places
Timer: Fix signal for updating the duration
+

  [Test case]

  - Make sure all the functions work, adding world clocks, alarm,
  stopwatch and timer.

+ - Make sure that the timer start button is now enabled after entering
+ minutes and/or seconds via keyboard or clicking on the plus and minus
+ buttons.
+
+ - Start a stopwatch then add many laps until the view becomes scrollable
+ and it can be scrolled to the bottom. Also clearing the stopwatch view
+ should be smooth now.
+
+
  [Regression potential]

- - The regression potential is low given that this is only a bug-fix
- release and version 3.36.2 has been in Groovy since June 2020 without
- bugs and no upstream 3.36 commits since release.
+ • libcanberra is added to the flatpak .json because it was removed from
+ the GNOME SDK. This is required for building the flatpak and does not
+ affect running the application.
+
+ • Two crashes are fixed by adding more explicit casts and null checks in many
places, and enabling the vala (experimental) null checker. The regression could
be that the package doesn’t build any more, and/or the application loses
functionality. However, it builds fine in my PPA for all architectures in
Focal, and all functionalities run well.
+
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-clocks/-/commit/3e3cf17843d5dd2e645c7d5458b77dde93d99c94
+
+ • A fix is applied to the world clocks by handling impossible places to fix a
crash and avoid spamming the log with criticals.
+
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-clocks/-/commit/237d63e57568185b1763e788b6768c3331b40848
+
+ • A fix is applied to improve the handling of zones where twilight times
can’t be calculated. This helps to fix the same bug mentioned above. The
regression potential is the same as above.
+
+ • The timer start button was not enabled after entering minutes and/or
seconds via keyboard (and changing focus via the tab key). This is now fixed.
+
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-clocks/-/commit/32c1a3345e0523caf2e4eaef054b1aa7785cd4ae
+
+ • There was a theme parsing error. This is fixed now by ignoring the
not-found resources.
+
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-clocks/-/commit/814bccd1794f7ede4621f05490fde8fb0d74615b
+
+ • The stopwatch view was not scrollable to the bottom when many laps were
added to the stopwatch view, and there was an animation glitch when clearing
the view. This is now fixed.
+
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-clocks/-/commit/76655a8b60c584395922ce7627b75124d518aa1d
+
+ • Version 3.36.2 has been in Groovy since June 2020 without bugs.
+

  [Other]

gnome-clocks 3.36.2 has been successfully built as a no-change backport

[Bug 1892643] Re: [SRU] Update libgweather to 3.36.1

2020-10-11 Thread Amr Ibrahim
That .diff is actually auto-generated from the package in my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~amribrahim1987/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=libgweather_filter=published_filter=

The package is built fine for all architectures in Focal and installs
and runs OK. Maybe the .diff got corrupted from downloading and
uploading again!

Could you please try the package from the PPA?
