Note that I had the same setup with 14.04, which worked perfectly with MPlayer, but sometimes showed a purple border with VLC. As it stands, vlc won't work at all with vdpau output on my current system, so I cannot tell if this is an mplayer thing. I've tried with youtube and MP4 videos from
