[Bug 1101684] Re: Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally
First I tried this for a few day with Debian Wheezy beta RC, now again with XUbuntu, doing frequent reboots, no hanging boot process occured anymore. The issue has been fixed. I would like to say thank-you to the person who did it, just marked this as 'Fix Released'. ** Changed in: installation-report (Ubuntu) Status: New => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1101684 Title: Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/installation-report/+bug/1101684/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1051604] Re: cpufreqd is misconfigured and does not work at all by default
Until today I thought, that the patch worked for me, it really did probably, and I am not so enthusiastic about tuning CPU-frequency scaling manually in userspace. Really average users should not be bothered with this kind of stuff, everything should work out of the box everywhere. But in some cases, when CPUs are too energy-hungry and have exaggerated maximum-frequencies, it makes sense probably, to limit those to 80%, because energy-saving is higher this way than the resulting loss in performance. So status set to 'Opinion'. Is this OK? ** Changed in: cpufreqd (Ubuntu) Status: New => Opinion -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1051604 Title: cpufreqd is misconfigured and does not work at all by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cpufreqd/+bug/1051604/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1107909] Re: Boot-problems on FSC Futro S400 Thin Client
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: The issue was already reported earlier here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/installation-report/+bug/1101684 The broblems occured first with Debian Wheezy beta and the 3.2-pae-kernel there. See: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=694344 If you carefully read these two reports, then you already know everything. Can you please see if this issue can be fixed with some quirk ? Obviously the problem is a regression and did not occur with earlier linux-versions, because the device is a native linux-device and originally has 'eLuxNG', the latest version downloadable at fujitsu- support-website is from the year 2007, so most probably it has a 2.6-series kernel. It is _very_ improbable that the problem is due to a hardware-failure, because I have two of these thin clients here and it happened with both of them. demon@fsc-s400:~$ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Release: 12.04 demon@fsc-s400:~$ apt-cache policy linux-image-3.5.0-22-generic linux-image-3.5.0-22-generic: Installiert: 3.5.0-22.34~precise1 Kandidat:3.5.0-22.34~precise1 Versionstabelle: *** 3.5.0-22.34~precise1 0 500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/main i386 Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: linux-image-3.5.0-22-generic 3.5.0-22.34~precise1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-22.34~precise1-generic 3.5.7.2 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-22-generic i686 AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.25. [Bug 1101684] Re: Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally
My current BIOS-Settings are: 'Power Management Setup'/'ACPI function [Enabled]' 'PnP/PCI Configurations'/'Resources Controlled By [Auto(ESCD)]' 'Integrated Peripherals'/'SIS OnChip IDE Device'/'Primary Master UltraDMA [Disabled]', /'Primary Slave UltraDMA [Disabled]' /'IDE DMA transfer access [Disabled]' 'IDE Primary Slave PIO [Mode 0]', 'IDE Burst Mode [Enabled]' and 'IDE HDD Block Mode [Enabled]' It works for now, so my last and latest guess is this: IDE-DMA-mode interferes with IRQ-Initalisation at boot-time. The device runs well enough, even without IDE-DMA, though it would be a nice to have feature, not trying to measure the difference in overall-performance. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1101684 Title: Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/installation-report/+bug/1101684/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1101684] Re: Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally
Untill yesterday I saw problems twice while trying to (re)boot. The first picture 'hss-0.jpg' was taken at cold boot, so maybe it was due to too low environmental temperature. This occured once only, then I reinstallaed and used the ext4 filesystem this time instead of ext3. No boot-problems occured since then. The second picture 'hss-1.jpg' shows the hanging boot-process during IRQ-initialisation with a different BIOS-setting that mentioned above, this happened with 'Resources controlled By [Auto(ESCD)] actually. So it seems, that either the BIOS is a bit buggy and has a sloppy PnP-ACPI initialisation routine, or current Linux kernels are. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot depicts the hanging boot-process at IRQ-initialization" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/installation-report/+bug/1101684/+attachment/3496108/+files/hss-0.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1101684 Title: Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/installation-report/+bug/1101684/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1101684] Re: Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally
The bootproblems are really quite tricky, sometimes there were no problems for a whole week, then they reoccurred. The box I am currently testing has the current and only available Q-BIOS version. Following settings were made: 'Power Management Setup'/'ACPI function [Enabled]' 'PnP/PCI Configurations'/'Resources Controlled By [Manual]' 'Integrated Peripherals'/'SIS OnChip IDE Device'/'Primary Slave UltraDMA [Disabled]', 'IDE Primary Slave PIO [Mode 0]', 'IDE Burst Mode [Disabled]', 'IDE HDD Block Mode [Disbled]'. This works for now with the current Quantal-Kernel version 3.5.22, which has the CPU run in performance mode initially. Maybe this is sufficient and sustainable.
[Bug 1101684] [NEW] Xubuntu 12.04.1 on FSC-Futro S400 Thinclient locally
Public bug reported: FSC Futro thinclients can be used as nettops, because high speed CompactFlash cards have become reasonably cheap today. Operatingsystems can be installed locally onto ConpactFlash-memory. The card used provides about the same read-speed as gigabit ethernet would. It was a chronical problem with this box, that intermittent boot-problems occured, either when booted from cold condition or at warm-reboot. The system hung somewhere near IRQ- and ACPI-initialisation. First I thought this might be due to incorrect BIOS-settings, replaced the RAM, now I think, that there are powersupply-incompatibilities between different models. There are two different power-supply models available and incompatibilities may occurbetween systems, please beware. I chose the low-latency kernel variant for this box, i.e. installation was only possible in expert-mode (from USB), during the process I selected the second kernel-version offered (generic) and when it was done, it was possible to install a low-latency kernel and remove the other. With debian I experienced earlier, similar boot-problems with pae-kernels. So it is very positive, that Ubuntu offers a wide variety of kernels with and without PAE, even a realtime-version. There is not so much need to build a kernel-package yourself, that matches the system. 512 MB of RAM are sufficient for Xubuntu for nettop-use. Hopefully it is possible to upgrade to the next LTS-version 2014 without having to upgrade the RAM-amount. The energy-consumption is very low, at a maximum of 21 Watts, so it can also be used as a home-server, running most of the time, or as a client for testing network-setups. 256 MB of RAM are insufficient for desktop-use, because even when using light webbrowsers like midori and 'webbroser' epiphany, it is not possible to open more than two or three tabs at the same times without making the system using swap space, slowing it down to non-usability, also without swapping for light applications it is slower, because there is lack of disk-cache, so even lighter desktop-environments would be recommended. In my opinion this privides avery good price-performance ratio, the boxes are available in abundance in used or refurbished condition and quite affordable. I changed /etc/default/grub and attach this file. [Bug 1100204] [NEW] package is unusable
Public bug reported: This problem was reported once earlier today automatically, now I want to add that the package is completely unusable, a worthless lump of bits. It does not change any settings, but chrashes instead. When you think of it logically, it would at least have to ask the user for his/her password in order to gain root-privileges, but bloody hell it does not. It will not even work if invoked from the terminal-emulator with sudo. But sysv-rc-conf does work for christssake when invoked with sudo in a terminal, so this is fair enough, thus removing that crappy lump of software now from my system. Cheers all. Public bug reported: Installation went fine, the normal AMD64-desktop version was used to set up the opeating system. [Bug 1051604] [NEW] cpufreqd is misconfigured and does not work at all by default
Public bug reported: 'cpufreqd' and 'cpufrequtils' were installed manually, and they should belong to the standard-system for AMD64-architecture, because most PC do support cpu-frequeny-scaling. /etc/cpufreqd.conf had to be altered in order for the daemon to actually start doing anything. [Bug 1051599] [NEW] Ubuntu 12.04.1-AMD64-desktop installed from alternate-CD
Public bug reported: The normal installation-method did not work on this PC in 64-bit mode, installation from the live-CD environment failed, too. So I downloaded the alternate-desktop CD, which did the job, but clearly not too well, because problems occured, which were reported anonymously, automatically. In my opinion the packages 'cpufreqd' and 'cpufrequtils' should be installed automatically by defaullt for 64-bit architecture, because very most of these computers actually do support cpu-frequency-scaling and it can save some electrical energy, even when it does not work too effectively. cpufreqd was not configured correctly either, so I file a separate bugreport against the 'cpufreqd'-package. [Bug 1026532] [NEW] Gnome 3 works now with the newer proprietary NVidia-driver
Public bug reported: This is meant to be a clarfication of yesterday´s report. Actually Cinnamon- and Mate- Version of 'Linux Mint 13' were installed on this box yesterday and not on the other P4-computer, I try to get rid of. The situation is now as follows: Installation and System Start went fine first, but when Online-Updates were applied, the next system-start was 'Out of sync range' and not displayable by my monitor. This may be a problem specific to my very monitor, because it reports wrong ddc-values or the like. Setting the default-boot-parameter to 'vga=791' in /etc/default/grub did not change the situation either. Next I tried installing the recommenden propreitary NVidia-driver, which did not work out. Then the newer of the two proprietary drivers was installable and works just fine with gnome-classic and gnome3 are both usable and OK. So there really seems just a functioning driver missing for nvidia-legacy hardware. 3D accelleration works well enough with nouveau, so it would be sufficient, if someone was able to fix this gtk3-nouveau issue. This PC is not for myself, but for someone who still uses the previous LTS-version of Ububtu and is used to gnome. So gnome-classic shoud be OK for her at first without having to learn too many new things about gnome3-usage at once. [Bug 1026240] [NEW] Precise LTS installed with NVidia-legacy-card --gnome3-windows invisible
Public bug reported: Precise LTS was installed on this Pentium4 computer with an NVidia legacy-graphics card. Gnome looks Ok at first glance now upon installing all the software-updates, but when Applications are launched, the corresponding windows are invisible, semm to be mostly transparent. This is my third choice choice actually. First I tried installing 'Linux Mint Cinnamon', which did not work, looked OK from the live CD, but did not look OK anymore once installed to harddrive, because the bottom-panel was missing then. 'Linux Mint 13 Mate' installed next, this worked OK, but did not start up cleanly either, my monitor showed 'Signal out of sync range' and could not display anything while starting up the system until some garbled words showed briefly and mdm was visible. I tried to fix this by setting the kernel-boot option 'vga=ask' instead of 'silent splash' in /etc/default/grub , but this did not work either, boot hung, so I went for pure Ubuntu. Installation-report-bugs can not be filed using apport-bug in linux-mint, so I give feedback now this way. Will proprietary NVidia-legacy-drivers be made available to Ubuntu- users, once compatible versions are released by the vendor, or did they completely drop support for their legacy-hardware ? I will probably reinstall the whole system once again only with gnome- classic, and/or maybe the mate-desktop. [Bug 1008396] [NEW] gnome3 is unusable on my hardware due to messy screen-font
Public bug reported: This problem was submitted already as an installation-report. Now I reinstalled Ubuntu without Edubuntu and found that Gnome3 ist still unusable on this hardware. I am going to use Linux Mint 13 instead, if no fix is done in due time. Gnome-Classic works OK, but when using this, the Gnome3-Interface-Font is not changeable with the Gnom-Tweak-Tool. My Fix is to say goodbye to Ubuntu. Cheers. [Bug 790526] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on 450 MHz g4 mac
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: installation-report This machine is intended to be used as a surf-box. It runs fine so far, but feels a bit spongy, probably due to the slow sd memory and the pci graphics adaptor it has. The installation went without any problems in automatic partitioning mode, a separate /home partition was created, ext 4 used. A CD was used as installation source, a network mirror, too. pon installation there were about 400 updates to me made. The amount of time consumed by this task could be reduced by providing more recent installation CD images for the IBM PPC architecture. Overall this can be considered a complete success.
