HI Mo, As per Kai-Heng's request, could you please edit /etc/default/grub with the following options one at a time. GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.kbdreset=1 i8042.reset quiet splash" Then try GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.kbdreset=1 quiet splash" If still nothing, please try: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.noloop=1 quiet splash" It's intermittent - comment 14 seems to have it working 99% of the time on my machine - has failed to work in spells of 3 hours twice since Feb. Otherwise it works reliably. Could you comment 14 as well - edit /etc/default/grub and /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf If the fix works, then we're on to something. Kai-Heng -> flat out with work for the next month or so - the i8042 commands didn't work, but I can't remember if I had the two lines in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf commented out as well. Also - I pressed [Fn] + [ESC] (eject CD Tray) and [Fn] + [Space] (Toggle keyboard backlight) in this output. sudo showkey -s did not detect output from these either. If you need this re-run, please let me know. I installed the patch before I installed sparse-keys. Don't know if this makes a difference. Installed development kernel 4.11.0-041100rc2-lowlatency overnight as promised - no change in behaviour, buttons still not recognised. Installed development module overnight 4.11.0-041100rc2-generic and commented out the above changes in the /etc/default/grub. Working at the moment, but it's intermittent. I did leave the /50-synaptics file with the extra two lines alone, so they loaded. Joseph - I recall an email asking me to comment out the i8042.nomux=1(?) in the kernel. I can't find that - where would I find it? Fn + F8 registered a response. Fn + F9 registered a response. Hi Christopher. Will do - I'll allocate a couple of hours tomorrow evening to play around with the kernel. This laptop has an Elantech touchpad which needs a couple of i8042.x commands to get it to work. I'll install the nightly build kernel tomorrow night and let you know. In the past, the behaviour has been intermittent. It may or may not be a fix, but these changes *appear* to have had the touchpad recognised. Install was unsuccessful and no change to behaviur (see below) Have just tried but bug 1573206 (unable to install third-party deb files) didn't run the *.deb file in software update gdebi crashed also when I tried to run from there See attached *.txt file - dump of linux commands used to try and install with error messages. No change to behaviour - could be due to unsuccessful installation. Could you please advise other commands that I need to use to successfully install development package (oh, and the xenial-proposed developer option was ticked in the Software & Updates tab.) Update - bug is intermittent - touch pad works and is detected 50% of the time on bootups, just not the first 5.
