ipw3945 has too many problems. iwl3945 should be used. Did you try it
too?
I do not know how I would try it. Is it in Synaptic, is it unique to the
Hardy testing releases, or is there a source package somewhere?

I can also confirm that removing gtk-qt-engine fixes it immediately. The
problem occurs even if the qt theme is not in use.
